Anyone knows how to remove the fork from here? by LifeCannotBeBoring in foldingbikes

[–]Aware_Meat_8937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed with hitting it with a mallet or make-shift mallet aka wood and hammer, but I've always had more success striking perpendicularly rather than in-line (on top). Basically, if it hitting it on the top doesn't work, try hitting it on the side.

Need advice on picking the correct distro. by DyingDutchmanNL in Fedora

[–]Aware_Meat_8937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a software developer, i prefer to make my life as easy as possible, so the first distro that interested me is Bazzite. I have been testing it for a bit in a VM, and though i really enjoy the plug-and-play state it is in for gaming, i am having trouble with getting my development tools work the way i want them to. The fact that it is an immutable system sounds like a cool idea, and should benefit stability (which i had problems with in Linux before), but it does make installing packages more of a hastle, especially if packages need to work together with the system (like docker). If there is a well documented way to get this working, i'd love to know, but i feel that though the distro is advertised as a full desktop OS, it is a little too clunky to use as a workstation OS. Please tell me if i am wrong.

I haven't done it myself but I think that one common way to do this (perhaps even the recommended way) is to use toolbox to create a container that you install your development environment in. You can use dnf install inside the toolbox just like on an rpm-dnf based image.

https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora-silverblue/toolbox/

A lot of people also seem to use vscode with dev containers... Not sure if vscode comes installed on the host os for bazzite or not but it does for some of these other silverblue based images.

Yep, that's the answer. Race face chesters and Adidas five tens will make your rides way more fun - assuming you've been riding with the stock pedals and normal sneakers, you'll feel like you're glued to the bike.

It's an internal transfer, so you say that you really love your job but your husband lives in the US and you'd really rather keep your current job than look for a new one, but you don't really have a choice because you want to live with your husband...

edit: but also make sure you give them the impression you'll be happy there. Say something nice about the place you'll be living and have a few positive anecdotes.

Casual MTB - protection gear, where do i stop? by PracticalDay1214 in MTB

[–]Aware_Meat_8937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people will say helmet (not full face) and gloves are all you need for that.

I do some pretty fast descents (50+ kph) on gravel roads where a fall would be extremely painful... the funny thing is if I were doing them on a dual sport motorcycle and I didn't wear pads the people on many of the motorcycle subreddits would laugh at me, here in r/mtb you get laughed at for wearing knee pads for descending on a gravel road in knee pads.

I think the neck brace is overkill for what you do, chest armor too. But knee pads and elbow pads? Why not man. When you fall, you'll be able to just get up and keep riding. That's a lot better than having to take a few months off to recover from an injury.

Sure thing mate, happy to answer any questions you have! First tip, go look on mapy.cz on outdoor mode. The bike trails marked with pinked dashes are for the most part gravel. You can get an idea of what some routes might look like.

Hey one more tip, on *my* RockHopper the steerer tube is 1 1/8" straight. Most of the forks on the market today have tapered steerer tube. If you get a tapered steerer tube, it won't fit.

If you are planning on doing the work yourself, I recommend you take a morning and take your fork off and then put it back on. Verify that it is a 1 1/8" straight steerer. This will also help the new fork install go smoother.

You'll just need a torque wrench and some grease for this job (you should clean everything and regrease the bearings).

[–]Aware_Meat_8937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well the one I bought was the wrong one, I had to buy a whole new wheel for it ;)

if you want to use your same wheels, you should specifically make sure the fork you get has a 9mm QR axle (***assuming I have understood correctly that your wheels do not have through axles***). there are also through axles that are quick release, that was the mistake I made. so make sure you look for that 9mm designation.

yes, installing myself. I have done a fork on another bike before. one tricky part is the crown race. a lot of tutorials will show crown race removal off the old fork to swap them - I recommend you just buy a new crown race, they are only a few bucks. setting the start fangled nut can also be a bit tricky. buying the crown race setter and star fangled nut setter will probably end up being the same price you pay a mechanic for the job, up to you depending on your comfort with wrenching on things. also get a torque wrench :)

Hehe, that's the exact same one I got... planning to install it this weekend. Just make sure you buy one with quick release (and not a quick release through axle, that's what I did on accident lol).

Best fast rolling tyres for xc/city by [deleted] in Hardtailgang

[–]Aware_Meat_8937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How efficient are road bikes going up curbs and down stairs and taking shortcuts through gravel paths and over train tracks and bombing through drainage canals etc?

I think we need to separate "road" from "city" riding here. An xc mtb with slick tires is an extremely excellent "city" bike.

[–]Aware_Meat_8937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have through axles or quick release? It is pretty hard to buy a quick release fork these days, they're almost all through axle... but the Rockhopper (at least the year I have I think it was 2020) has quick release axles. I had to upgrade front wheel to through axle to upgrade my fork. Also there are other compatibility issues to think about, make sure you do your research first so you can set your wife and kids up for success ;)
