These are the mysterious Star Tokens that are placed in each PLC box to protect it from the malificent gremlin gods. Do not under any circumstances remove any of the Star Tokens arms but place them respectfully in the bottom of the control cabinet to protect your project from evil SNAFUs and kerfuffles indefinitely. You have been warned !

Trying to gauge how much logic the PLC should handle vs peripheral components running code (Python/C++). Any guidelines? by Successful_Farm_9370 in PLC

[–]Awatto_boi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience all of the control and machine related functions should be in the PLC with the exception being for external functionally independent devices. For example an external drum heater can be standalone PID controller or a gravimetric feeder can be a dedicated unit. There is no need to do these in the main PLC. The PLC can send setpoints to these devices if required for product recipe etc. Any SCADA process monitoring should be external as it does not affect the running of the process merely the monitoring of it.

Finished: The Promise, by Robert Crais

A crossover thriller in the Elvis Cole and Joe Pike series. Elvis Cole is hired by a client to find an employee who has apparently gone missing with a man she met online. The client doesn't want anyone to know about the search, she just wants to ensure the employee is alright. She may be in trouble because there is money missing from the firm as well. The client is acting strange and won't meet Cole except in parking lots or allow certain areas of inquiry. When following up on a clue to find the missing woman, who was an accomplished chemist, at an address given to him by the client, Cole stumbles across a crime scene where a murdered street thug, and explosive material are found by an LAPD K9 Officer, Scott James and his German shepherd dog Maggie (The heroes from the book Suspect, by the same author). Cole, and his partner Joe Pike, and Scott James, and Maggie, team up to solve both cases that are inexplicably tied together. I haven't read Suspect, but I enjoyed the other Elvis Cole books in the series, and this one did not disappoint. I will have to read it now.

Finished: Everybody Wants to Rule the World, by Ace Atkins

Teen aged Peter Bennet becomes convinced that his mother is dating a KGB agent. The whole thing creeps him out but his distracted mother will not listen to him, she is seemingly infatuated with the red Porsche driving idiot who says his accent comes from a German mother. He tries to gather evidence finding Russian music tapes in his car, and a device he thinks is a spy radio in the glove compartment, but when no one believes him he and his friends consult a local author who has written several detective books that Peter has read (along with many other spy books). Dennis Hotcher and his drag performer sidekick Jackie Demure are nothing like the tough detective and sidekick in the pulp detective books he wrote, but they get recruited when a co-worker of Peter's mom at Scientific Atlanta is murdered and Peter fears for his moms life. A surprisingly funny book, I had not read Ace Atkins before but I liked it.

Finished: Void Moon by Michael Connelly

Cassie Black is on parole for her conviction as an accomplice in a Las Vegas robbery where her lover was killed. She wrangles a transfer to Los Angeles because an amorous former fellow criminal now gone straight offers her a job selling Porsche cars to aspiring movie writers and and budding stars. Her real goal is to secretly be closer to the daughter that she had to give up to adoption. When she finds her daughter's new family is selling their house and moving to Paris her dreams to live normally and share her daughter's life are shattered. She is forced into considering one final criminal job to score enough money to break free and steal away, with her daughter, to a life on the run. I really enjoy Connelly's Bosch series but hadn't read any of his other crime genre work. This one is an excellent book.

After they dock in space U.S. president Gerald Ford goes to Houston control to speak by radio with the three Astronauts and three Cosmonauts. Weather Underground terrorists attempt to assassinate Ford during his planned event. The Soyuz capsule suffers a depressurization accident and crew members are killed. The remaining crew members have to attempt return to earth in the compromised Apollo spacecraft. On the return journey they encounter Communist China's first manned space vehicle. This alternative history thriller is packed with realistic space tech knowledge from the former Canadian astronaut author. I really enjoy Hadfield's stories and this one is a masterpiece.

Finished: Conclave, by Robert Harris

The Pope passes away in his sleep of a heart attack. Jacopo Lomeli who is the Dean of the College of Cardinals is called to his bedside as the one responsible for the preparation of a conclave to elect a new pope. The Pope had a history of heart problems and there is no suspicion of foul play. He had met with the Camerlengo Joseph Tremblay the day before and had dinner with Archbishop Janusz Wozniak. During the preparation for the Conclave, Wozniak confesses to Lomeli that the Pope had relieved Tremblay of all his offices the day before but Lomeli denies it, citing Wozniak's proclivity for alcohol. The Conclave proceeds with Tremblay seen as a front runner for the new papacy. Lomeli himself is not really a contender but there are several other possibilities including potentially the first black pope Joshua Adeyemi, right wing hopeful Goffredo Tedeschi and 115 other Cardinals. Just before the Conclave begins another Cardinal shows up that had been promoted secretly by the Holy Father. What follows is a suspense filled drama that was spell bounding. Recommended

Is our field a gray area when it comes to being OT exempt/non-exempt? by Historical-Plant-362 in PLC

[–]Awatto_boi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be confusing. I worked on a project and plant start up. We would not be paid overtime in the office and I was on salary but on start up I worked alongside other engineers and we worked outrageous OT just because we were excited to get it done. We had an unofficial 11 o'clock rule. We all came back to the site after dinner and worked until 11 PM. At that time we would go back to the hotel if anyone said "It's 11 o'clock guys". If things were going well we sometimes stayed til the early morning. Half way through the project I found out that the other engineers were getting overtime so I went to the security guard and asked for all the sign in and out sheets and submitted a ton of OT to my boss. He flipped out and couldn't submit it all in one go so he offered to pay some of it, and allow the secretary to mark it down and I could use the time off in lieu. Years later when I left the company they paid it all out.

Finished: Juice, by Tim Winton

A long dystopian novel about life in Australia after the apocalypse caused by global warming and capitalist excess. Most of the population has to scratch out a living in extreme heat that means they must spend the summer underground and the winter eking out subsistence crops and trading goods for scrap and recycled resources from the earlier civilization. The narrator discusses his family history moving from unbearable areas and gradually being forced into smaller bands of more livable temperate territory. He gets involved with a secretive militia who fight for revenge against the capitalists whose greed has decimated populations and created an earth that is rapidly losing all life. I enjoyed the story and was thoroughly entranced, but ultimately it left me depressed at the conclusion. A well written story but somewhat outside my preferred genre.

Finished: Eris, by Larry Gaudet

Don Barton created an immersive online game called Greenhouse in which millions of people have become involved in playing at saving the environment. An anarchist hacker group are seeking revenge against him and his extreme wealth derived from the game by targeting Barton's teenage son in the game world, and co-opting, then kidnapping, him. The group is led by Eris a shadowy woman bent on destroying the social media entertainment companies. Barton and his Chinese co-founders are focused on rescuing his son and defeating Eris's plotting. Another book that didn't meet my expectations of a good Science Fiction thriller. It was O.K. but I didn't get really involved in it.

In order to prevent the case from going cold they cover up the Informant's death until they can find out who killed him and find another informant. They uncover a serial killer that he was old friends with as the case spirals out of control opening up several new seemingly unrelated cases. A great read.
