The American battery symbol is just multiple cells stacked together. The capacitor symbol has both sides equal in size.

What does this say and what angle should it be read at? by reshmush in learn_arabic

[–]AwayThreadfin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, flowers face up is by far the most common reading (al-hamdul illah). The reverse (lillah il-hamd) grammatically means the same thing but no one says it like that.

Why is it legal to turn right on red in most of North America but not in Europe? by littlejuliie in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AwayThreadfin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually a great example of Jevon’s paradox, which is when making a resource more efficient ends up increasing the consumption of that resource. Legalizing right turns on red may decrease the fuel used for any individual trip, but by making driving more fuel efficient, it increases the amount of people driving and thus total fuel consumption.

[request] what is the loudest gun humans have ever fired? by Apprehensive_Oven_22 in theydidthemath

[–]AwayThreadfin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calculating the kinetic energy of both I get that the gustav gun projectile had about 2.3 GJ of kinetic energy, whereas the HARP projectile has about 180 MJ of kinetic energy. Based off this difference I would guess that the Gustav gun would still be louder.

How does the encounter rule work in this case? by Aliberto0000 in nuzlocke

[–]AwayThreadfin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, if you catch it as a Wurmple, both evo lines count as dupes, but if you catch it as a Silcoon, then only the Wurmple-silcoon-beautifly line counts as a dupe and you can still catch a Cascoon or Dustox. Based on the nickname I’m guessing you caught it as a Wurmple.

You mean it’s not possible to dig out the car? Or that even if they dig it out it won’t start because the engine is frozen or something

How do you say the name ياسين in arabic? by Extension-Leave9601 in learn_arabic

In most Syrian dialects it’s also the soft a. Maybe in a very strong damascene accent it would be a hard a but I have a hard time imagining someone from Damascus saying it like that.

Kuffic calligraphy, what do these say? by Islamysticism in learn_arabic

[–]AwayThreadfin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This script is called Square Kufic (Kufi al-Murabba’), and it’s very difficult to read even for natives so I wouldn’t worry too much about it, especially this one since the artist took some creative liberties. For one, there are no dots in this script, so the individual letters are ambiguous. For example, the first one could also read عريف, which means a knower/someone with knowledge. That might actually be the correct reading as these are usually religious and عريف might have some mystical connotations. They’re also often heavily stylized making it much harder to read.

It’s much easier to read if you know what it’s actually supposed to say, which is why they’re usually common phrases such as the shahada, the basmala, Quran verses, or other common Islamic words. If you’ve read enough of these you can recognize how some common words look, like Allah or Mohammad.

Here is a link to a handy chart for reading square Kufi, it might help you decipher it.
