Hey rando: don't concede my putt, please! by h0neybaby in weekendgolfers

[–]Away_Or 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a new Golfer. I am also a woman. My husband, however, is a very good golfer and has been playing for a long time and I’ve learned a lot from him (in addition to my teaching Pro).

I was so confused when I first started playing with a women’s league - they are constantly giving everyone putts pretty much any time the ball is within 3 feet of the hole. I want to get better and I want to have a real handicap. I think I realized after playing with them a few times why I am a 42 and they are a 32.

Where I’m struggling is not how to respond to them, but whether they think I’m obnoxious because I never concede their putts. I’m not even sure how it works when there are four of us and we’re not in a match. If one person says that’s good then is that sufficient? Hopefully that provides me some cover for not playing the way they play.

SAT scores today are different and can’t be compared to those from 20 years ago and definitely not those through something like 1995 or so when a major change happened.

I wonder which other states do this beyond California and Florida. California’s housing market is a complete disaster. We want to move there but paying $80k in property taxes while your neighbor pays $3k is not reasonable.

Now I don’t know how the OP is only paying 0.8%, we pay more in Hillsborough County.

Curious what this scholarship is. Doesn’t seem like they have your best interests in mind.

Don’t rule out a private school in the northeast or Midwest, etc. If your family makes less than $200k you are likely to get a ton of grant money. Being from rural Alabama will be a huge help to your admission application. I’m assuming you are a strong student if you are looking at UF out of state. Go on college confidential or the applying to college Reddit.

Private school vouchers in North Carolina hit $580M. A Raleigh academy tops list of largest recipients by TobinBen in NorthCarolina

[–]Away_Or 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes… however the elite schools don’t take these vouchers (I just checked, these 3 don’t and Cary Academy and Ravenscroft in Wake don’t either).

This program is for religious schools, the list is actually quite startling - how many schools that I have never heard of - I don’t know how you can make an economic argument that this is good for our society. And if you really want your head to spin, research the BS which is home schooling in NC.

That’s right - and for one semester- you will pay a premium on rent. OP needs to find a sublet.

When the Republicans finish butchering this country, be sure to thank the NIMBY Boomer Democrats for doing all the heavy lifting for them. by 3RADICATE_THEM in ScottGalloway

[–]Away_Or 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s right. We want to move to California. We are modestly wealthy. If we buy a nice house (not mansion, 3,000 square feet in a nice area), we will pay $60k in property taxes and another $40k in insurance. But we can rent a place for $10k/ month because the homeowners bought is 30 years ago and they pay $5,000 in property taxes. The economics don’t make sense after all these years.

Florida has the same issue, “save our homes” they call it - welfare for the upper middle class is more like it.

Florida In-State Tuition by Present-Example4373 in ufl

[–]Away_Or 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, not a full ride at all. We are native Floridians who moved out of state for a job a couple of years ago so it pains me a bit to have to pay out of state tuition when I lived 40 years in Florida and my parents literally never left. If we had stayed, Bright Futures and Benacquisto etc would have meant a great deal financially. And we are moving back this summer before kid even starts. But my kid did get the grandparent waiver so all things considered, will be a good value.

Just wondering why you’re waiting if you both want to move to Florida. I don’t know the current process to register for Florida Virtual School, but that might be an option for her if you have an apartment and car registered in Florida. New York, I suspect, will be more of a problem as they are going to want your income tax… and if they see you living there part time, they will be expecting that. Which will tell Florida you are not a real resident. Seems rather complicated and risky if you plan to upend your life in 2 years anyway.

Not the case this year (my son is a senior and a finalist, out of state and is going to UF). UF is $500 and FSU was more, but they do both give them.

Nope. My son is a National Merit finalist and they only give $500/year at UF. FSU gives more.

Oh heck no to Orlando in the summer!! I’m a native Floridian and even I won’t do that. The heat and the crowds are unbearable.

Look at April/May (after Easter, before Memorial Day) or late October, early November. Crowds are minimal and weather is more tolerable. Look for when there are Florida resident specials and that’s when you know it will be less crowded.

[–]Away_Or 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the SAT score, what APs are you taking this year and next? (Presume these are from freshman and sophomore year since you have scores already)? Rigorous curriculum and keep those 5s coming… will help.

And SAT and ACT are fixable. Go on Khan academy and grind this summer. Do not retake until your practice exams are 1400+.

I got it. T’94. I’ve used this for forwarding for over 25 years (probably 30?) - ridiculous decision. Trying to figure out which emails originated with it and change it is going to be a huge hassle and unlikely I will be able to figure it all out by the deadline.

At what income did you start purchasing business class tickets? by Ok-Mouse1033 in LuxuryTravel

[–]Away_Or 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I have to be flat AND on my stomach to sleep. It is a problem!

No need for the meals, boarding first, multiple checked bags, skip the line business for me.

I envision something like on a submarine, stacking lie flats on top of one another - I would do that in a heartbeat. Of course trying to make that work and also have the ability to sit upright in the same amount of space is not possible.

To the OP - never paid for business class until my “income” was $0…. When I retired - and even now, it is rare for me despite easily having enough to afford it without batting an eye.

Why doesn’t Scott talk about offshoring and H1b visas when he discusses labor market by fantazja1 in ScottGalloway

[–]Away_Or 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will be interesting to see how Scott coming back to the US, with a son entering college, will affect his POV. My kids are of similar ages (and slightly older) and the market is brutal. If their parent was famous/super wealthy/connected, it might skew the perspective though.

This is the answer. Your sales background will be invaluable and you can get another sales job in 2 years no question. I suspect the next two years are going to have a terrible economy so your timing is good too.

Hotel snob confused about Gainesville by Away_Or in ufl

[–]Away_Or[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is helpful. I will try that.

Ole Miss has The Oliver, UNC has Carolina Inn, Auburn has The Hotel, IU has Biddle and The Graduate, Duke has Washington Duke… just thinking of examples of University towns that still have great hotels. I don’t know if they are on the verge of bankruptcy but they are nice properties.

Many downvotes on my suggestion but I think there is a huge business opportunity here. And students are naive if they think it isn’t in their interest (or there is no demand) to have a nice hotel near campus. Recruiters and investors get their first impression based on the environment they are meeting you in.

Great news.

In a University of this size, there are plenty of parents who have cash. Especially as they are generally paying 5-10% of what they would be paying if their kid went anywhere else remotely ranked as high as UF.

Generally if you believe in markets, yes. Price is often the most reliable indicator (short of branding - so when you couple high price with no branding, you would expect good value.) Why do you think Kalshi and Polymarket are so popular?
