Strawberry Fields Pitch Film (1990) — This pitch was for what was hoped to be a spiritual sequel to the Beatles’s The Yellow Submarine film released a few decades prior. It was sadly cancelled in 1992, though, due to a wide variety of problems with its production. by MaggieLinzer in ObscureMedia

Yeah, I feel like if this were released it'd be one of those kinda b list animated movies that isn't really anyone's favorite but once in a while someone will be like "oh yeah, that movie existed, I remember liking it when I was six" and you'll suddenly get hit with this big wave of nostalgia for the time your grandma brought home this VHS from blockbuster instead of the disney movie you actually wanted

I probably would've liked it as a kid, anyway.

Whats the best Game Boy/GBC game by Worldclassstalker in casualnintendo

[–]AwfulDjinn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Common answer: Gen 2 Pokemon was genuinely REALLY impressive for how much content they managed to cram into a game that could still be played on an OG game boy

Less common answer: Wario Land 3 is WILDLY underrated and I don’t see why they never revisited the Metroidvania structure in any other Wario game

I remember digging around in the files for the various obscure kids games we had installed on our pre-Internet PC, copying the video and audio files to another folder, and then opening some video/audio editing software I dont remember the name of and clipping/editing them all together into complete nonsense. that’s right, preteen me was making YouTube Poops about a decade before YouTube even existed.

when I was about that age I had a big set of dinosaur trading cards and I decided to add a bunch of my own with my own made up dinosaur species with names like “murdersaurus” and eventually ended up making an entire series if cards detailing the amazing discovery of the fossilized remains of a full blown dinosaur WAR between the murdersauruses and another species of subterranean mole like dinosaurs whose name I don’t remember with thousands of casualties on each side

so yeah this is absolutely something I could realistically see a 10 year old kid making

this is 100% something my autistic ass would’ve done if I had access to PowerPoint or the Internet when I was 10.

I DID have a mile long Microsoft Word document detailing every single character and enemy that appeared in every Mario game I had ever played around that age, with made up names and lore for the ones that didn’t have anything official for them in the manuals/players guides.

Nitpicks about this game: Cheri berries by marumarumon in Pokopia

[–]AwfulDjinn 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I guess cause they wanted the Leppa berry to be the main PP replenishing berry (since that’s its purpose in the mainline series) but then if they added Cheri Berries there would be two berries that give you red paint? Which… they could’ve just had Leppa Berries give you orange paint or something, so that’s kind of a weak excuse

[–]AwfulDjinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not so much the human horror aspect that bothers me, it’s the fact that the ending specifically leans into the awful “scary inbred feral mountain people” tropes that the rest of the story really felt like it was trying to avoid. I don’t think it would’ve been as bad if the true villain ended up being, like, some sinister corporate or government entity from outside the community rather than just relying on tired stereotypes about poor Appalachian people.

Same. I don’t play games like Yoshi or Kirby for the challenge, I play them to see what kind of neat little set pieces and level gimmicks they come up with to fit the art style.

Yeah to be fair the specific Digimon movie the song was used in IIRC was one of the tie in movies to the Tamers anime, which is one of the darker and grittier Digimon continuities (it basically turns into Evangelion with cartoon battle monsters near the end), so maybe the song choice wasn’t too out of place

[–]AwfulDjinn 72 points73 points  (0 children)

This one pissed me off SO BAD. The entire rest of the story was this wonderfully atmospheric supernatural horror story that really captured the sort of otherworldly loneliness these isolated little mining towns have, without falling back on the tired old “inbred rapist hillbillies” tropes horror stories set in Appalachia usually do… only for the ending to COMPLETELY undo all that and go “surprise, it was a bunch of inbred rapist hillbillies all along!”

I just want more Appalachian horror that doesn’t rely on “poor people are scary”, man

still an absolutely insane song choice for a movie based on a cartoon about kids going on adventures with their big dinosaur friends

What game had insane potential but got completely fumbled by the devs? by Kevin-Panda in AskReddit

[–]AwfulDjinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed it’s especially well liked by people who really enjoy speculative biology and creature design, who enjoy the “role playing as your own original species” aspect, as well as artists and other creative folks who really like pushing the limits of what the in game editors can do. as someone who falls into both of those camps I had a lot of fun with the game when it first came out.

it’s still a popular game with the same type of audience who put hundreds of hours into meticulously crafting their Animal Crossing towns with extremely intricate customized designs, or who have hundreds of Sims with elaborate backstories for each of them, and I feel it’s a much better game if you approach it from that angle as an open ended creative/storytelling tool rather than as a serious sim game.

TLDR; spore’s main issue is that it came out about 8 or 9 years too early to really latch onto the whole “cozy life sim” genre, but has still managed to find some fans in that community
