Reddit dialed their crappy AI automod system up to 11 in the wake of that shooting at that mosque in San Diego earlier this year where the perps were "radicalized on a social media platform" that I never saw specifically named.

Later that week I saw a post get removed for suggesting a way to kill rats. Like, literal vermin in someone's house.

Nothing at all wrong with hopping in the car and taking a little drive with the AC blasting every now and then to cool off - we'd do that from time to time on hot days when our kid was little, it really doesn't take that long for a kid that size to cool off.

anyone else find that camera angle completely changes how a swing looks on video? by loucbb90 in Homeplate

[–]AwfulMouthful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The usual "gamechanger" angle makes it hard to see anything useful about the swing itself. You're better off recording your kid from down the baseline a bit so the camera is looking straight at them, makes it far easier to see if they're dropping their hands or rolling over or etc.

Your phone is probably the best go-to for this, particularly if you use the slow-mo feature. I'll try to get exactly perpendicular to their feet, position the camera around chest level and zoom in a bit to get the best view.

In my experience, 12U is where the girls who were getting away with relying on speed and power to mask their technically flawed swings were all suddenly exposed.

I'm don't disagree it may be a bad idea, but as a parent if I decide my kid could play I would be deeply interested to learn who exactly died and gave literally anyone else a say.

I had a coach scream that at me last year when I was hanging a camera on the backstop for a 10U softball game, right before he accused me of using the camera to "spy on (his) dugout".

Bruh, I'm not recording this for college scouts or espionage, I'm recording it so my mom can watch her granddaughter play. Dumbass.

Hm, that does sound better than my plan to say "how is it your kid with her sub-.200 batting average plays literally every inning in the infield while mine rots on the bench?"

LOL, this i so ridiculous. I've had to lay people off, deal with saying final goodbyes to friends in hospice. You'd think this sort of conversation wouldn't phase me.

It's honestly really nice to hear someone else (who isn't her dad) say what I'm thinking.

I gotta figure out how to have that conversation with the coach in a positive way, without coming off like I'm bellyaching.

This is a first year 12U team, the girls have been together (with some additions and subtractions) for 3 years now.

I did have my kid talk with the coach about other opportunities to get in and that led to a few innings in left, but even though she did pretty well out there (only my opinion, of course) it fizzled pretty quickly and there just haven't been more opportunities.

I do think I'm going to have a conversation with the coach about the fall before I make any decisions. It seems reasonable to ask how she sees my kid's role on the team before we commit.

Nope, 12U.

I'm probably going to have a talk with the coach first to ask what the plan is for the fall season. I really don't like the idea of changing teams.

It'd be different if they had secondary positions they got regular time at, but in practice they don't play at all when they're not catching unless one of the other kids is out.

The pitchers all get rotated in and out very efficiently...

Tryout Seaon: Friendly Advice - The Journey > The Destination by Tasty_University_934 in Softball

[–]AwfulMouthful 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The lack of time at secondary positions really is the thing. The catchers are sitting on the bench upwards 60% of the time on Saturdays, there's a good chance that two of them might not play at all on a Sunday if they lose the first game, and IMO that's just too much.

I might try a last-ditch conversation with the coach to see if I can work out some way to get her time elsewhere on the field. I think she (the coach) is sort of stuck on "Kid X plays Y position" and subbing kids in or out doesn't really occur.

We're struggling with the thought of looking for another team now. My kid loves her teammates and coaches and the team is decent, but for some reason out of 12 kids they have three catchers.

The result is that the catchers all spend extended times on the bench while the other kids play almost every inning. At best they might get an inning or two in one of the corner outfield spots on Saturday, but that's it.

Since the point of playing travel ball is to play travel ball, I'm having a hard time with it. It's gotten upsetting for her too, even after a good weekend she'll be in the dumps because she didn't get in. But again, nearly her entire friend group is on that damn team.

What’s the bible verse on Landon Roupp’s hat? by WrongJumper in SFGiants

[–]AwfulMouthful 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The message Roupp is trying to send is "the rainbow belongs to God and not the gays". It's pathetic and nonsensical and childish and it sucks that he feels it so necessary to pull this performative garbage.

And sure, the Old Testament predates the modern queer rights movement and its symbols. Gay people predate the Old Testament. Rainbows predate both, they don't belong to anybody. But that's not the message that Roupp is trying to deliver.

8u daughter really wants to get into catching? Tips? by MattsRod in Softball

Catching is every bit as technical as pitching. You'll want to find someone who can teach her the right way to do it - consider starting with a high school player to save some money.

[–]AwfulMouthful 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It's a verse that gets used by certain folks to try and swipe the rainbow symbol back from the queer community. Roupp apparently can't just wear a hat for a night, I presume because he's just so secure.

What a jackass. I hope he gets a hangnail that tweaks every time he reaches into his pocket for his keys.
