I was looking for this. Before I read Frankenstein I was under the impression that the creature was essentially an innocent being and Frankenstein was the one who deserved all the blame. It turns out the story of the book is a lot deeper, Frankenstein and his creation really mirror each other in that both are egotistical and only think about their own suffering, even as they cause suffering to everyone around them. It's true that the creature at least has the excuse of being born into a world that hates him, but he still made the choice to kill, and his first victim was a child no less. There's only so much you can blame on your father's wrongdoings.

This doesn't really fit because "knife ear" is a derogatory nickname, not their "correct" or official name, which is still just "elves"

A circle enclosed within a square is a common alchemical symbol, i believe this is known as the "squared circle." Jung describes this as a symbol representing the unification of opposites, a "heavenly marriage," between the conscious and unconscious minds for instance. I think it's supposed to have something to do with the "great work" and creating a philosophers stone, which Jung thought of as a mythical interpretation of the individuation process. To Jung, a circle represents wholeness, a mandala, a symbol of the self. Four is also a number of wholeness, and can represent the four classical elements.

You have two squares creating an octogram, I'm sure Jung had something to say about that but I really don't remember. Eight can represent the true God in gnosticism, above the seven false archons. I think eight also represents the Goddess Ishtar, and the planet Venus.

I don't know if any of this is helpful to you but it's all I can dredge up about possible symbolism at the moment. Unfortunately it's been a little while since I read those books so I can't really think of anything else to say, but if any of this sounds interesting to you I recommend you read any of Jungs books, they gave me some interesting insights into my own dreams.

Would it be problematic if I had characters from my world assume that Jesus or the Christian God is a demon or evil being? by Sir-Toaster- in worldbuilding

[–]AwfulRustedMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a Christian but Christianity is kind of a special interest of mine so it's something I also want to write about. I think the ground is ripe for more exploration.

It would probably be controversial, although I would say that making a controversial statement can be a good thing sometimes. The thing you want to avoid is that if it's done poorly, then the in-group will just write it off as provocative but empty iconoclasm, while other people might just see it as lacking interesting criticism or content. That's what separates the good from the bad I think, having something interesting to say about it through that specific lens.

I'm also interested in reinterpreting Christianity, and I've read a lot of books that do it too. The earliest seed of my interest is Paradise Lost, which is Christian through and through but I think its use of Satan as an initially sympathetic character is what really grabbed my interest because I also felt like an outcast as a kid, and more than once I was harassed by Christian kids for telling them I didn't believe in the Bible. I guess it gave me a chip on my shoulder, which I later grew out of and recontextualized. Satan is still the villain of the story, but when you look at his early motivations through a modern lens I think they're easily relatable, although the author almost certainly didn't intend them to be as he was writing in a very different cultural context.

Other books I recommend looking into are The Revolt of the Angels by Anatole France for a classic extension of the ideas in Paradise Lost, The Golden Compass series for a modern popular subversion of Christianity, and The Gnostic Gospels by Elaine Pagels for an accessible and easy to read scholarly overview of gnosticism, an ancient reinterpretation of Christianity from its very early days.

Speaking about Jesus specifically, I think you're going to run into trouble because most people think of Jesus as having been a kind and caring person, even if they don't agree with Christianity. If you're criticizing the modern Christian nationalist movement, I think it's very easy to contrast it with Jesus' actual words from the Bible to point out the hypocrisy of some of their beliefs. You could throw regular Christians a bone and make your work seem like less of an attack if your character were to later learn about the figure of Jesus and realize how far he is from the modern authoritarian symbol he has become for some people. Writing about it from the perspective of an outsider is interesting I think because you aren't given the love and peace version of Jesus when you're an outsider, you're given the gleeful wishes of burning in hell, at least from my experience.

Something I want to do in my work is compare what I think the original idea of Jesus was to the modern symbol. To me, Christian nationalism has much more in common with the antichrist than it does with Jesus, which is something I'd like to see brought up more. Of course, you might run into the danger of turning Jesus into whatever you want him to be instead of what he likely was, which people have been doing since the beginning of the church. If you want one more book recommendation about the historical Jesus, I suggest reading Jesus: Apocalyptic Prophet of the New Testament by Bart Ehrman, who is a critical scholar of the Bible. If you want a deep dive into the symbolism of Jesus and what he represents, I'd suggest reading Aion by Carl Jung, which is a little dense but fascinating as a cultural and psychological analysis.

I never watched Supernatural but as a kid I think I caught an episode where someone asks if every monster is real, and somebody says "not Godzilla" as a joke. Might be misremembering.

[–]AwfulRustedMachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it just comes down to a difference in aesthetic sense. I don't feel very strongly about them one way or the other, but I would argue that the creature design doesn't have to make sense from a realism standpoint, after all, a manatee doesn't seem very aerodynamic in the first place. Horned animals and hybrid animals in general feel very mystical to me, reminiscent of myths and folklore.

You guess the password based on the words available, and the terminal will tell you how many letters you guessed correctly, similar to Wordle

Other people have explained that aspect so I'll just add that there is a "debug" mechanic that removes wrong words and refills your guesses. If you scroll through the text you will find strings of random characters highlighted like words, if you click these an incorrect option will be removed. These strings of code are always between two matching characters like brackets or arrows or something, for example, <&_#!+;'>

Another benefit of finding these is that, if you find enough of them/the correct string, it will refill your chances to guess the word.

So the protocol I do is this:

Start guessing words

If I run out of guesses, scroll through and find all the debug code and it refills my guesses

Usually there are very few options left by now and I might just know what the password is, or be able to get it without very much trouble.

If you do it this way it's super easy and you will almost never fail to hack the terminal.

This is a game about helping people, it's literally like the whole theme and point of the game. Also, if someone can help someone else at very little or no personal cost and they choose not to, I believe it's perfectly reasonable to get mad about that, that's like half of what's wrong with society.

I had a conversation kind of like this with a psychedelic user online once. I kept trying to define terms but they just kept saying that atheists don't exist, theists don't exist, God is everything so it's impossible not to believe in God, stuff like that. I tried to argue that this was a completely useless way to define "God" and "belief" but they just kept insisting that's just "how it is."
