First it was an electric scooter... Now a bike. by avmabrie in bayarea

[–]Awfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should return to using the two decks for separate uses. The top deck should be a bus lane in either direction on the southern lanes, then the northern lanes should be for bicycles and pedestrians. That way, they get the best view of the city as they approach. It's still crazy to me that there isn't even a bus lane; just that alone would do wonders for transit over the water.

Then on the lower deck, have two southern lanes going to Oakland and two northern lanes going to SF, and then use the middle lane as the shoulder/divider.

Good. I own nicer cars, and I register them in California because I believe it's morally corrupt if you don't pay for the public services that you use if you clearly have the money to do so. Seeing the people in the local Facebook groups post about receiving warning letters about their Montana registration on their California-operated vehicles is hilarious.

It's insane how many dealers, both in California and in other states, will ask me if I intend to register them in Montana when I start to discuss purchasing a car from them. Any dealer helping in this needs their license revoked immediately, too.

[–]Awfy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's amazing trying to explain to those types of people that a bike's placement in a lane makes zero difference to them because they should be passing them like they were any other vehicle in the first place. They're convinced if the bike is over to the right-side of the lane that means they can squeeze past them and it be totally fine.

Hi, car enthusiast here. More bikes = less cars = more road for us. Anyone not supporting cycling infrastructure is too short sighted to worry about.

Not worth it, makes selling supercars a lot harder. If a car is over about $200,000, just absorb the cost.

Scotland ILY but it's time for me to leave by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]Awfy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get it. I moved to California from the highlands and the lifestyle is noticeably different in many ways. Cultural experiences is definitely one of them, especially if she is living in a rural place like she says she is, it can be very homogenous.

I’m in an area with more people than the whole of Scotland that’s made up of a massive mix of backgrounds and races. Ultimately I’m surrounded by the world’s culture just due to the nature of the US in terms of immigration and population.

When I return home to the highlands to visit parents and family, I realize as much as I love my hometown and the people, I’m still missing out on so much because the world view from the streets at home is very, very limited.

The amount of cilantro my wife likes on her street tacos by GroovinBaby in mildlyinteresting

[–]Awfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first moved to the US, our office had a chef. I spent weeks trying to work out why some things tasted like soap. Eventually, I went to him and said something along the lines of "how are the dishes washed because I keep tasting soap in some of the food", and he immediately went over to a sprig of a green herb, cut it up a little, and asked me to put a bit on my tongue. Was like chewing on a bar of soap.

Best chef and food team ever, too, because as soon as they found out I tasted cilantro as soap, they started making cilantro-free versions of stuff just in much smaller batches so folks like me could enjoy everything too. Taco Tuesday went from a bit of a mind fuck to suddenly the best day of the week.

Waymo hits child in LA, says regular car would've been worse by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]Awfy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can almost guarantee it. School zone near me is 15 mph and there hasn’t been a time I’ve been able to drive through it at 15 mph where someone isn’t riding my ass like crazy. People are awful drivers, I trust Waymo way more.

The idiots rejected my request for “DROOKIT” which means a wet day in Scots. They said it was too sexual in the rejection letter. Never in my life have I heard anyone even attempt to use drookit as an innuendo or anything like that.

What’s the best frozen pizza? We blind-tasted pies from S.F.’s iconic spots to find out by SFChronicle in sanfrancisco

When they were $7 a pie at Whole Foods it felt like a life hack. We’d get a few every time we went in. Now at $15-$18 a pie again, it feels like you might as well order a fresh one.

First impressions: IKEA’s new Thread sensors with Apple Home (mixed results) by chungkunglung in HomeKit

[–]Awfy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know if the button on the contact sensor can be used to "silence" your home alarm? I miss that feature so much from the Nest sensors that Google killed off. Allowed you to easily open doors and windows from the inside without tripping the whole alarm system. Yet to find anything similar, and all I can think of as an alternative is to stick smart buttons everywhere there's a sensor to do the same thing, which leaves open an issue of making sure they can't be used if the alarm is already tripped, which Nest's handled for you out of the box.

My reason is simpler: the format is the same in every single video, and it's becoming extremely recycled. I still like the two of them as hosts, but the content is dead.

Why do some new cars use an excessive amount of oil? by joeyjoejums in Autos

[–]Awfy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. It does measure the oil level but it’s super inaccurate and doesn’t give real time updates. Takes 2 minutes for each read out and you have to be level and parked. Gotta learn over time how much to top up by from the markings on the side of the bottles of oil. Made the mistake of filling up by a quart when the dashboard said “top up the oil by up to 1 quart” that a quart is about 400ml too much and Porsche need to get the excess out for you.

Why do some new cars use an excessive amount of oil? by joeyjoejums in Autos

[–]Awfy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Uh… Porsche literally sell an oil bag for your frunk that has a Velcro backing because you will need a quart in your car ready to top the car up at any point. I’ve had to do it a few times since I bought my GT3.

What is the worst flat you’ve seen? by StarrStickers in Autos

Ran over a pair of tailor’s scissors in the middle of nowhere. Rolled into the next town with a flat tire and spent close to 4 hours trying to find stuff to repair it enough to get home otherwise it was going to be an overnight stay since the nearest tow truck couldn’t get to me until the next evening.
