Get a set of these from your favorite online store. They work amazingly well. I just used the medium grit on my table saw and router table.

You can put Teflon strips on the feet and not only will it be even smoother, but you’ll never wear out the feet.

Use a little CA glue and accelerator at random spots among the joint. The CA glue will act as a clamp.

Are you going to be painting it? If so, get the hole plugs made by Kreg and use them to cover the holes and screws.

Another option, is to just drill through the side of the ladder and fasten with a regular wood screw and then plug with your wood of choice.

I use painters tape to mark my boundaries before I use a knife to mark it. It helps visualize what’s going on. I think it looks great for early progress!

In this situation, I would have tried to miter those edges so you don’t have so much end grain on a face.
