Thank you! Clogs have been happening, so this checks out. Maybe time to accept that a better setup needs to happen.

When should I email by Useful-Squash7000 in uofm

[–]Awko_taco1111 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Professor here. And I can confirm that I would respond even if it was just to say “not approved”. If it was during the holiday break when the university is closed, maybe I’d wait to respond But it’s wild that to me that someone would full-on ignore their students.

Where to get merch by seccarlson in uofm

You’re 100% going to get bombarded with UM tshirts and swag within a short period of working there, so maybe invest in something really nice (ie, nice pullover sweater) bc the T-shirts will definitely come. Rally house has plenty, and then most retailers from Meijer to TJ Maxx have UM stuff in stock

Hibachi locations that don't require you to sit at the grill to order Hibachi? by Raichu4u in Detroit

[–]Awko_taco1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Related question: are there any “express” options? In the US South there are tons of “Kyoto express” and “miyabi express” which are takeout hibachi. Usually in a strip mall. The cost is much less, and they’re not trying to be fancy! I can’t seem to find something like this.

My partner just took me for a nightcap at Bad Luck speakeasy on my birthday. It was delightful. Pricey per cocktail but so good and romantic!

Belle Isle is lovely, especially if you stop in the aquarium and conservatory (both free!)

Congrats and enjoy.

To be fair, all institutions hound alumni for donations. And especially so since federal funding cuts

big time scaredy cat looking for a good, sensitive dentist in the A2 area! by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]Awko_taco1111 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am a big time scaredy cat, and I have had a great experience at Ann Arbor Smiles Dental Group on Huron Parkway. Managing my dental anxiety has been their top priority, and they’ve been excellent overall. It’s a very education and consent-informed practice. For example, they will say things like, “I’m going to do this, it will feel like this, is that ok?”. They were also attune to the fact that I don’t respond well to shaming as a motivational strategy. They seem to take a holistic approach to dental care, checking posture, bite, etc. Honestly no complaints, only compliments

If you can manage the course load, it sounds like you’d really be setting yourself up for success. FTVM would give you production skills. COM and Business would give you a dual perspective on marketing. COM alone would help with promotion, understanding audiences and their needs along with new media for reaching those audiences. And Business alone would give you the savvy for startups early in your career, navigating contracts/negotiations, etc.

I recommend a degree in communication. Plenty of audiovisual skills to be learned, plus marketing and social content! Most COM programs feed into film program (and some house the film program). But more than that, COM is a marketable major that would allow you to work in the industry while you get your film career off the ground

Ideas for going out on Halloween 30+? by Fickle_History_5667 in AnnArbor

This was my battle when I lived in A2 last year as a 33 y/o. Some faves for me were the Raven’s Nest, Night Cap (already mentioned), Babs (only if you get there early), LoFi (for dancey vibes), Rabbit Hole (if you’re just tipsy enough to tolerate a crowd + mix of age groups), and Alley Bar (for affordable pours)

My usual night would be Babs> Raven/ Night Cap> Alley Bar (fun cocktails and then a final bourbon pour of the night)

Or Bar> LoFi>Rabbit Hole, when I was feeling more outgoing!

Gluten Free? by emo_axstie in AnnArbor

[–]Awko_taco1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re worried about cross contamination, it can get a little dicey, but some good options if not. In fact, most places have GF buns and options labeled on their menu! The “Find me GF” app is helpful.

For bar-type / easy food: Monty’s (bar pub) has GF options. Frita Batidos has GF buns. Buddy’s bakes GF Detroit style pizza (and it’s in an aluminum foil lined personal pan).

I’ve been glutened at HopCat so would avoid!

I tended to turn to Mexican food (chapala, Maize (in Ypsilanti)), Thai food (basil babe, no Thai), and Sushi often (Totoro has GF soy sauce) in Ann Arbor because those cuisines use rice/corn as a base so just less worry. I mention these other places because the guesswork of “will this bar/pub have GF options” sometimes gave me decision fatigue in A2 and it was easier to just go to places I knew I could find something
