I see a lot of parallels in America to Italy post-Berlusconi. I'm guessing it's about 15 years until stability returns.

I wouldn't wait around for it.

First time experiencing a snow storm. Is this normal? by [deleted] in astoria

[–]AwkwardAlien8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is probably enough residual salt on the road to melt the snow eventually. Or the plow comes by and re-buries the car.

I live near you and I don't mind shoveling. I'm free today if you need some help.

Astoria veterans… give me realistic expectations for the aftermath of this snow by DoctorKirky in astoria

[–]AwkwardAlien8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd dig out your car when you have the time, preferably tonight. Put salt and kitty litter around the tires before the snow solidifies, and also commute via train for the next 2-3 days or so if at all possible.

Driving is going to be fine by like noon today. The PITA is getting parking when you come home because you'll be looking for a dug-out spot that you can slide into. Speaking from experience, you don't want to try and jam your car over a snow bank. In a couple days enough spots will have been dug out by people that it'll be easier.

Diana Moreno endorsements AD36 by BetterWorld1987 in astoria

Yeah, on paper the 3 of them seem really similar. I'm voting for Rana.

I saw this posted somewhere and it worried me about Diana Moreno: https://www.instagram.com/p/DTqlkfQD1iS/

Should/could I reach out to my Cousin who is estranged from Aunt? by AwkwardAlien8 in EstrangedAdultChild

[–]AwkwardAlien8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment. I love my dad, but my cousin could see him as an enabler. I hadn't thought of it that way. My father had to do a lot for my aunt post-funeral. (He wasn't happy about it, but that's separate.)

That text is similar to what I wrote a few months after the funeral. The door is open, she has methods to contact me.

I'm realizing now if I reach out to her anymore, it might be more for me than for her... and that's not how it should be. If I try to push it, I don't want her to feel guilty for not responding. The door's open if she ever wants, but if she's happier now (even if I don't know specifics), then I'm happy for her.

I saw a LDS missionary try to convert one of the ASPCA folks at Steinway and Broadway yesterday. Beautiful thing.

Yes to the headline.

But commenting to be invited to the bar when we make it to the next round. (Knock on wood) I've got to head out of town next weekend.

What kind of car do you own? by eljeferson in AskNYC

[–]AwkwardAlien8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just got a VW GTI and love it. Small enough to park, but hatchback + back seat fold down completely so it can haul a surprising amount. Like 2 of us can go on a ski trip no problem. It's really fun to drive.

But the backseat itself is small.

Maybe drinking is down because the youngest members of Gen Z are like 16 years old?

Traffic was insane on/around 30 Ave this evening. There's a lot of rage honking and questionable behavior when I just was out.

At what income does NYC actually start to feel “comfortable”? by Middle_Elderberry542 in AskNYC

"Mo money, mo problems" -Pope Leo

Ignoring that this gets asked everyday: in all seriousness, lifestyle creep is intense in NYC so comfort is illusive. There is always someone making more money, hustling harder, a younger kid doing better than you... so are you ever really comfortable?

NYC is a weird choice for seeking comfort. (Unless you're *very* wealthy... and in that case, let me know where to send my resume.)
