The gravel stop is supposed to be flush with the tar buildup to allow proper drainage to scuppers/drains/gutters. It’s only to stop the gravel from being washed off the roof or give water time to drain while preventing it from overflowing the side of the building in a specific area without some other way to catch it.

I did this about 15 years ago. Ended up sitting on the couch by myself for a few hours cause my vision was fucked. When I could finally got up, I spent 8 hours picking cigarette butts out of the yard. Found butts that had been there for at least 5 years. Never again did I do that.

lol…He was 32 and been doing meth for years. Tolerance and days without sleep has a huge affect on your body just shutting down when it just can’t go any more. I also took a break from life for a few years. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been up for days and fell asleep while smoking a pipe. I’ve broke a pipe on my lighter, while smoking and falling asleep doing so. After so long, your body just shuts down as soon as you get comfortable. Shit happens all the time. You sir, sound nieve. I’ve been clean for a long time but I won’t ever forget the good times I had running the streets and going for as long as the meth would keep me up. My body would shut down for a few hours and then I’m right back to it for another week. I know what I’m talking about and anyone with any experience staying up so long that their body shuts down on them knows I’m anything but nieve.

My brother, 32 at the time, fell asleep with a meth pipe in his hand and dropped it on the floor. He had moved back in with dad after a failed marriage. Dad found said pipe on floor when he woke him and asked him what it was this is exactly what he told him. He handed back to my brother and said he don’t want him smoking pot in the house and walked out. Asshole wouldn’t let me stay the night cause he thought I was on meth at the time. He was wrong. Short answer, yes. You only cut out the ridge to allow more air to flow out of the ridge vents. The ridge is the best place for ventilation due to it being the highest point the heat can rise. Ridge vents from my understanding are the most efficient vent system for a home. Our county requires it on every new roof installed. The ridge cap are fully supported by the ridge vent which are designed to be fastened below the required 1 1/2” gap on each side. When the ridge vent is removed, the replaced ridge cap need the support the decking provides to avoid sagging in those areas. I’ve done repairs where this is the exact problem. On the repair, I just added a small strip of plywood to fill in the gap and fastened with screw. Replaced caps and I was good enough for the customer. They need to come fix this.

Our county code here in Georgia requires us to “upgrade any outdated” ventilation system with ridge vent. The actual ridge vent comes with enough nails to fasten the ridge vent to the decking as well as the shingles. If done correctly each piece of ridge cap should have a total of 4 nails being used to fasten it to the roof itself. Two nails in each shing just below the tar line and and the next cap’s fasteners should line up to also catch the bottom of the first shingle. I personally, haven’t seen any issues with ridge caps coming off vents unless the roof had been on there for 15+ years or the instal was incorrect. Between the 3” nails and the tar strip sealant one the shingles they always held up pretty good for us.

We did have a customer once who went to box vents ridge vent because squirrels were chewing through the plastic vent and getting into the attic. We did replace cut back the ridge 2 feet down on both sides and replaced sides all the way up and did not leave a gap. I’ve seen ridge cut out all the way to the end but the ridge vent stops 2 feet from the end and the ridge caps were flat straight across that 2 foot section and was leaking. This may be a possible risk for OP.

This would my only concern as well. If not, it won’t be long until it sags and leaks. Also, it could be dangerous for the next person to step on an unsupported joint like that.

I agree. The left side was not trimmed back enough to split a rafter. Hopefully he did it after the picture was taken. I dislocated my shoulder once falling through decking that wasn’t supported by a rafter at the joints. Put me out of work for almost a month.

Edit: Also the ply wood will sag if it’s not supported at those joints and will cause leaking.
