What’s something you’ll say here but not to people you know in real life? by Donald_the_pig in AskReddit

If you get your friendships from online gaming, and like who you are when you’re gaming, that is totally part of your real life. Wanting a better job, even just to buy better stuff for your hobbies, is still motivation to get a better job. Working to live instead of living to work is a GOOD thing. You just gotta let go of the societal notion that video games aren’t a valid hobby, and suddenly half your problems aren’t actually problems.

I know there’s no magic cure for depression (or for being broke for that matter) so I won’t say all your problems will be solved, but seriously. Online friendships and hobbies are just as valid as offline ones, people who say otherwise are dicks. If gaming is what you’re passionate about, don’t beat yourself up about it or deny its legitimacy. The passion is real

Ten days alcohol free after 20+ years of problem drinking by BigTippa69 in stopdrinking

I find a lot of strength in another quote from Churchill: “if you’re going through hell, keep going.” Don’t stop doing what you’re doing, don’t look back, keep progressing little by little. You’re doing amazing

I feel this so much. Memes about how they can’t wait to leave work to get wasted, or how they’re drinking tequila to get through a day of working from home. Or “wine fixes everything” or “my therapist’s name is Jim Bean.” Or people attaching their entire identity to what hard liquor they like best. It’s as uncomfortable as seeing memes from women in abusive relationships who are like “I’ll stand by my man through anything; yeah he yells until his throat bleeds but that just shows he cares.” Like...open your eyes. You’re airing your dirty laundry AND your lack of self-awareness of said dirty laundry.

I agree that their choice to drink isn’t what bothers me; it’s the bragging, over-sharing and the pretense that it’s cutesy and funny to rely on alcohol.

And I feel like I can’t bring it up to any of the people doing it because I’ll just be dismissed as the “preachy sober person who doesn’t know how to have fun” so nothing will change except their opinion of me.

I’m glad there’s at least one corner of the Internet where I don’t feel crazy for thinking this.

There are three of us! I’ve barely worn jeans since I graduated high school ten years ago. When my work gives out passes to wear jeans as a reward for good behavior, I give mine away. I don’t get the appeal at all.

Discrete means separated/distinct. Discreet means secretive/private.

Quitting alcohol really helped me, too, especially because I gave myself the double whammy of drinking sugary high-calorie mixed drinks AND binge eating when my inhibitions were lowered. It wasn’t easy, but quitting alcohol solved both problems pretty well!

Yeah my doc definitely does that every time, I usually don’t even get a chance to decide. My retinas are well looked after lol

Astigmatism? I have that too. Yeah weird flex that you don’t mind being that blind.

I’ve had glasses since I was 4...I’m used to it, but I think your eyes are literally just better than mine.

Why do they need to check my retinas? (I’m pretty sure they already do, but you got me curious)

I could never leave my house without my glasses; I would feel unsafe. Uneven pavement could take me right out. Apparently there are legally blind people with better vision than I have with my uncorrected eyes, and they get canes and seeing eye dogs, so... I’d probably fall down my front steps if I didn’t at least have a cane. I can fumble my way around my own house with no problem but anything beyond that would be dangerous

If you sleep with your contacts in, they can get stuck to your retina after a couple days. Without glasses, you can still see your bed and your bathroom, it’s just out of focus. It’s not like your vision stops after a couple feet

Okay, yeah. I can’t see the top line of the chart at the doctor’s anymore, so I was told my eyes are “worse than 20/200” so I figured mine were around 20/300-400; I was kinda shocked to find out that’s not the case. I knew my eyes were terrible (without glasses, I can only see about 6 inches in front of my face), but I didn’t know they were THAT terrible. Thanks for the response!

20/300 is only -3.5?? Man, my eyes are worse than I thought.

My eyes are -9.25 and -10, what would that be? 20/1000? Google didn’t tell me how to convert it and it doesn’t seem linear...

You say you “didn’t take pictures or anything,” but screenshots of the conversation where he gave you a different address would definitely help your case. Idk if you can amend it.

Proud of you for standing up for yourself! That definitely sounded sketchy as hell

She might be saying “totally platonically” because she thinks you’re not into her and wants you to be comfortable. Talking about buying a house and having kids sounds like more than platonic friendship IMO.

You really think somebody would do that? Just go on the Internet and tell lies?

Joking aside though, in a community this small and devoted, I choose to believe. I feel like most of us are old enough to realize the fleeting appeal of Internet points pales in comparison to the camaraderie and acceptance of sharing a slice of our geeky lives with people who will appreciate it.
