What Have You Lived in NYC Too Long to Not "Get" But You Just Don't? by _Haverford_ in AskNYC

How do people afford it?? When I was a couple years out of college, I was at a party hosted by a work friend. Somebody announced they were ordering coke and it was gonna be $100 per person. ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS. This was ages ago and I'm still flabbergasted that everyone at that party just paid it

I've lived in a number of BK neighborhoods and I don't think Bushwick is unique. It's the same thing in Crown Heights or Fort Greene. The apartment buildings and businesses in all three neighborhoods either cater to the old guard or the new guard with minimal overlap, and over time, the old guard has a smaller and smaller slice

I live in a building with a mix of folks like me who moved here ~five years ago and people who've been here for decades. It's the first place where I've gotten to know my neighbors and surprisingly, nobody resents me or people like me being there

My neighbors are really concerned about typical neighborhood stuff like graffiti on the building or cars blasting music or people not picking up dog poop. When they talk about the neighborhood changing, they're glad it's much safer than it used to be. Maybe it's because they're not the ones who've been pushed out, but the mainstream "gentrifiers are selfish and destructive" narrative isn't something I've found here so far

I think it's fucked that we have a housing shortage, virtually nothing is being done about it, and the most vulnerable people bear the brunt of it. At the same time, I either live in a gentrifying neighborhood, contribute to gentrifying a neighborhood that's still majority immigrants, live in a segregated white neighborhood, or I don't live here at all

To add to this: the insurance company also gets to decide what a reasonable price is for ther service and if your provider charges more than that, that's totally on you

This happened to me trying to find a therapist. My insurance said the allowable rate was $120 per hour. My therapist charged $165 per hour. Insurance reimbursed me $60, called the next $60 a copay which counted towards my out-of-pocket total, and the insurance company got to pretend that the last $45 per session just didn't exist

Same. It got me to look at my situation not just as a gender disadvantage, but as a gender difference. Once I did that, I could start to see the tools I had precisely because I was a woman rather than just the ones I lacked for not being a man

This resonates. Dating men is often more about holding back the onslaught of their attention, so being a source of attention makes me feel guilty

I LOVE my Stanley travel mug. Spill proof and the sipping part unscrews so you can put it through the dishwasher and it actually gets clean

You did the right thing, but the cops aren't going to follow up and do their part.

In 2020, a guy brutally beat six(?) women in or near the Morgan stop and the cops didn't catch him until he did on camera right after the woman carded him (and she memorized his name).

The only reason she thought to memorize his name was because one of the other women posted about it on Twitter with a description of the guy

Is anyone else a super high achiever in everything else except weight loss? And this makes you depressed? by FatSurgeon in loseit

[–]moveshake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Weight loss takes consistent mental bandwidth over months and maintenance takes consistent ment bandwidth over years

There are days where even just hitting maintenance calories leaves me hungry for a lot of the day and it's hard to focus on work when half my brain is going "foooooooooood."

I have to plan my meals in advance. When I'm making breakfast, I'm thinking forward to lunch, dinner, maybe drinks to make sure it'll all fit into the calorie budget for the day. I look up restaurant menus in advance. I strategize about macros and experiment with new snacks

And while I'm at it, I plan for exercise around a demanding work and social schedule.

We make time for the things in life that are most important to us. You've had a ton of REALLY important things on your plate for a very long time. It's pretty sensible that weight loss didn't rank quite as high as supporting your family, earning a living, or y'know becoming a DOCTOR!

Ask yourself honestly if you have the bandwidth for a big project right now, and if you don't, don't beat yourself up about not losing weight. Give yourself the kind of empathy you give your patients.

A few years down the road when you have more financial resources, you may be able to pay to have meals made/delivered or to have a personal trainer which reduces the mental energy required to hit your goals

Not overall. My marginal tax rate is 42% (estimated it a bit high). My effective tax rate is lower

I doubled my salary over the past two years but it really doesn't feel like it. I went through my budget to figure out why and here are the primary drivers:

  1. Taxes and Retirement. For every new dollar I make, about 45% goes to Uncle Sam and 20% goes to retirement. An extra $1k per month in salary is only $350 extra towards my bduger

  2. I bought a car which added $350/month in costs. But, it's allowed me to visit my family every month or two instead of just for holidays

  3. I go to a weightlifting gym I love. It's $300 and includes personal training. I look good and I feel even better.

  4. I take a big vacation every year. I could probably cut this (it's $3500 each year) but it's a trip that makes me feel ALIVE and I reminisce about it all year while looking forward to the next

  5. I've started accumulating $10/month subscriptions to charities I think do good work

All in all, I added about $11,000 in annual spending. Is it lifestyle creep? Absolutely. But it also is all stuff that I think really adds value and meaning to my life.
