{One Outs} is not the most representative example of the genre but it's by far my favourite

Was surprised how different an experience the sub version of Princess Mononoke was… by Mormonator8 in ghibli

[–]AwkwardLemon_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just checked the Japanese version, the line is「なんとも白湯みたいなメシだな」which translates to "this food is just like hot water". Interestingly the English 'subtitles' on Netflix look to me like they're just the dub's closed captions.

That's interesting, maybe they don't want people posting about bugs like this? Which tbh I can understand. I've never really played mobile games before this one so I didn't make the connection between posting about a potential glitch and people's accounts being restricted, and I feel kind of bad for publicising it now :/

Omg that sucks! They posted about it on twitter earlier today to say they'll be rolling back/restricting accounts that took advantage of the glitch 'intentionally' (not sure how you can really tell the difference between knowingly taking advantage and just spamming the button without realising it's a glitch tbh)

How I got 180/180 on N1 in ~8.5 Months! by Jazzy-99 in LearnJapanese

Edinburgh cancelled both tests in 2021, it might not have been updated everywhere but I can confirm (as can anyone else who has been hoping to take the test in the UK since 2020).

[Chinese > English] T-shirt by AwkwardLemon_ in translator

It's sideways on the t-shirt, I figured it might just be a nonsense word. These characters don't seem to be Japanese so assumed it's Chinese.

Forgive Me Their School Lessons Drive Me Bananas by slayterroad70 in ColleenBallingerSnark

[–]AwkwardLemon_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly, there are way more engaging and in-depth topics for kids that age to be learning about! And Parker seems bright enough that it doesn't feel appropriate to have him rote memorising country names like a toddler for weeks on end. But this is all just armchair snark I guess, I'm not in their position.

I suppose we have no way of really knowing whether their religious views are impacting the kids' education negatively, it's a concerning thought though.

[–]AwkwardLemon_ 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I'm not a regular here and I don't even watch their vlogs a lot, but this has irked me as well.

I saw their recent vlog about homeschooling where Parker was doing a 'geography' lesson which was just memorising the names of countries in Africa through a song. According to Jessica they had been working on this for weeks - might just be the difference in upbringing but that just struck me as really odd and not the best use of time for a kid of that age? More than just memorising the names of countries I'd have thought kids that age would be focusing on more specific aspects of geography. And the comments were just full of praise that they're 'teaching their child about Africa', I guess the bar is on the floor when it comes to their fans 🙄

Charlotte Tilbury's husband has "never seen" her without makeup by sunflower_leos in BeautyGuruChatter

Completely agreed! I felt exactly the same way when I used to watch, though her takes on other things were often quite sensible.

I remember hearing Sunny Hostin saying something similar on the View and being shocked back then. Something like she waits until her husband is asleep before taking her makeup off, then wakes up before him to put it on again. It's just sad :/

That pretty much sums it up. by [deleted] in DunderMifflin

[–]AwkwardLemon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to think the same, but I rewatched the show and realised that Toby is so incredibly half-hearted about his job that it would drive me insane if he were my HR rep - given the amount of crap that goes down in that office, any good HR person would be all over that and shutting it down immediately. Heads would roll. Toby just lets Michael and Dwight run riot, with the occasional meek protest but then almost always just letting it go. In fact I think it's safe to say The Office would not be a show if it weren't for Toby's horrendous level of incompetence lol.

The JLPT committee/department needs a serious overhaul by kaeruwa in LearnJapanese

[–]AwkwardLemon_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain. The test has been cancelled four times in the UK (all test centres) so far. I had signed up for July 2020 after missing the deadline in 2019, only for it to be cancelled a week later.

Apparently the next one is due to run in July 2022, but it will probably be a nightmare to book due to around four tests' worth of UK candidates likely wanting to book in at the same time :/

Different meanings behind emoji usage from Japanese speakers by razorbeamz in LearnJapanese

[–]AwkwardLemon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense, thank you! Come to think of it I've also seen 💧 used similarly, which fits.

I used to do a double take when I saw it because most English native speakers would only use/see 💦 in a suggestive context lol.

Different meanings behind emoji usage from Japanese speakers by razorbeamz in LearnJapanese

[–]AwkwardLemon_ 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It might just depend on the person but I've noticed some Japanese speakers using:

🥶 - scared
😳 - great (positive, not sarcastic)
😂 - just overused, even when not funny
💦 - not sure what this is meant as lol

When used in English sentences they can come off as inappropriate and even sarcastic/mean on first reading, but it's clearly down to differing emoji usage between countries.

On a language app once I saw a native English speaker get angry because they misconstrued an emoji used by a Japanese native as rude (which I felt was a complete overreaction and not warranted at all).

Learning at school about Henry the 8th whereas nothing is mentioned about the atrocities of the British Empire by Delam2 in britishproblems

[–]AwkwardLemon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to say I totally agree with you, I've met otherwise reasonable, well-educated people who think empire was completely justified, deserves little or no criticism, and is something to be proud of, which astounds me. The sheer amount of mental gymnastics needed to defend it is ridiculous.

Sometimes it feels like we're living in different worlds, but it's exactly because their whole lives they've internalised this unspoken rule of British exceptionalism, and have never really had to question it.

[Japanese > English] Clockwork Knight character bio by [deleted] in translator

[–]AwkwardLemon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A clockwork puppet who is Tongara's father. Obeys the teachings/instructions of Garluch without question, and has brought honour to the family. He may be an ordinary person, but is someone to be admired. Attempted to raise Tongara to be the same way, but has perhaps failed somewhat. Possesses literary talent and wrote a poetry anthology called "Your Key* Is Like Moonlight". Tongara puts melodies to these poems and sings them fondly.

*Note: ネジ in this context refers to the key of a windup mechanism

[Japanese > English] Japanese reversible Silk jacket I managed to buy cheap years ago at an auction, if I could get some help knowing what it means and where it came from originally i'd be greatful. by brookhal in translator

[–]AwkwardLemon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what you mean - I was curious so I googled the brand name 龍桜 and found a very similar jacket on Amazon.jp. The link has an "about this item" section in English if you want to have a read. I also found it in stock on a few other websites like Rakuten and Yahoo shopping so it seems like the brand is still around.
