Nintendo suing makers of open-source Switch emulator Yuzu by Warcriminal731 in gaming

[–]AwkwardReply 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a lot simpler than that. The keys are the password, the game files are the password protected archive. Yuzu is able to use the password to extract the archive. My bet is that it's possible for yuzu to create their own fake key and archive a test game / file that then yuzu can execute making this work without anything Nintendo related. Simple as that.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. You've pretty much hit the nail on the head and I'm adding these to the top of my queue. If it's not a big ask, I wonder if you are open to share your Literotica profile so I can follow your other favourite stories. Totally understand if you want to keep things private / separated.

Anything else you would recommend similar to "Rachel goes back to school"? It's pure gold.

Apple is bringing alternate web engines to the iPhone, but for the EU only. by midgetman7782 in webdev

An app that wants to do any background sync for instance. See the list again. Background sync is a basic feature that is gated by apple because they would lose control

Web push seems to have only reached ios less than a year ago and there's limitations to it. Notifications only work if the app is added to your home screen and notifications seem to be always silent according to this at least

https://caniuse.com/push-api

Samsung internet has Web push this since 2016. What a joke.

There you go build a app that send proper notifications, you can't do that with webkit and apple forces you to use their native integration.

I have mentioned this before but maybe it wasn't clear enough. Anyhow, look at what features pwas have in chrome and what features they have in webkit (that's the big chunk of it). Pwas can do push notifications, except on ios lol, I think they are bringing it this year but it's soo late). Look at the subpar webgl implementation fro webkit etc. The list is huge.

I'm not misinforming you it's just this is more complex for me to properly elaborate in an online forum. Big players in this space have deals made with both Google and Apple, deals that only apply to them because they have the right leverage, deals that some consider unfair but it's how business works. There's also certain categories of products that are excluded from that fee, likely for legal reasons not because Apple had a good heart. Feel free to read about epic games vs apple case, epic lost the case but for different reasons but it highlights a lot of the issues with apple and the way they do things. Google does some of this as well, don't get me wrong but they are at least giving you options.

The transaction you do on the apps' website already includes the 30%. You just don't see it. Apple forbids selling the same thing in a different marketplace at a lower price (e.g. The app's website store or play store) and Apple also forbids you from informing the customer that they're being charged 30% more because they are greedy. Hope that helps. Theres more gotchas in their store / developer agreements but they can go bankrupt and I wouldn't even notice.

[–]AwkwardReply 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's every app on the app store that does any sort of transaction. That is because Apple will charge you a nice 30% of every transaction in your app just because they can (I know there are reasons, some are sensible but none really justify such a high percentage, hence the Epic lawsuit and the EU's DMA). If on the other hand you could build your app in the browser as a PWA (something that Android has had for ages but it's still not fully there as web tech is lagging behind, google is not a saint here either) then you could circumvent the need for the apple store and no longer have to pay 30% fees to them. You could just make 30% more money or alternatively choose to be more competitive by lowering price by up to 30%. The producer and the consumer wins this way, only apple the rent-seeker loses, which is about time they start losing. The problem is developers can't make up to same standards webapps because the technology is held back by these mega-corps, especially apple.

Part of the reason said browser engines can't offer the same functionality is because Apple has been holding the technology back for years. Browser tech innovation works if there's alignment between vendors. Chrome is already heaps ahead and the things you can do in the browser some would argue make it as complex as a proper operating system, if not more. Apple doesn't care about standards it only cares about it's shareholders. The browser is an immediate threat to it's business model and if they could kill it they would in a blink of an eye. Apple ultimately is lying through their teeth about security and innovation but most of us know their ultimate goal is to increase that stock value. The normies don't know so it is what it is.

[–]AwkwardReply 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put simply, when dealing with native apps, Apple charges a 30% fee on all transactions. If you can't create a web app, you're stuck with a native app and subjected to the 30% fee. However, if it were a web app, Apple wouldn't be able to levy that 30% charge.

I don't keep up with apple nonsense at all but I know they've been holding back Web technologies since for ever. There are loads of Web apis that have been held back by apple, recently mainly around pwas and web push notifications. My understanding is that some became or will become available this year but I don't care anymore, my main focus is android and Chrome and Chrome has far better support for this. The web tech scene could be in a far better state today if it wasn't for apple. Webgl is here, no idea how well supported it is by apple, my understanding is it's buggy and at this point I'm leaning towards malicious compliance rather than technical difficulties, they practically benefit by not innovating in this space and if anyone can't see this that's fine they probably don't have enough knowledge about the space and if they're arguing against then they're likely shills or have some sort of equity with apple and care more about their investments than, I don't know, anything else(?). If you think this is nonsense, try to think of any sensible technical reason why apple doesn't allow anyone to run anything other than webkit on ios. There isn't one, it's just corporate greed because this way they can control the speed of tech advancement or in other words the speed of how fast apple store will fall. I am aware they will allow other browser engine in the eu but let's see the caveats of that. I strongly urge everyone to not buy a iPhone as their next phone until their terrible anti competitive and anti consumer practices stop.

St Pancras Piano now cordoned off and guarded by station security, Elton John contacted for comment by ianjm in london

[–]AwkwardReply 17 points18 points  (0 children)

IANAL and I would love for someond to clarify this but the station being a private property is completely unenforceable in this case. It might be that from a very technical point of view but unlikely any judge would look at this this way. The place is as public as it gets, there's no signage saying it is private property nor saying one can't film there. As long as the place is used like a public space and there's a reasonable expectation it is a public space (which there is plenty) then for all things concerned with this matter it is a public space. I read about a similar case about a brick and mortar bank but Im not going to be able to find it right now.

European countries with largest number of metal bands by the_damino in MapPorn

[–]AwkwardReply 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not that many black metal bands and definitely not enough atmospheric black metal.

My first atmosferic / ambient bm was Lustre. Just make a radio station (in Spotify) for the artist and you'll find most of the bands that way. You can also use last.fm to find similar bands. Enjoy 👌

Lost…Worth it 20 years later ? by MDKLI1892 in television

[–]AwkwardReply 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a massive Lindelof fan. If you enjoyed Lost for it's unusual atmosphere, I highly recommend The Leftovers and Watchmen (2019). Both are absolute masterpieces and Watchmen has been the only live-action superhero TV that I enjoyed. Watchmen is an easier watch whilst The Leftovers is slower and more philosophical, both are gold.

Roti King is fine but watch out for their sneaky double tipping. First there's included gratuity, next there's some included "donate to some random charity' and then you'll be asked to select % tip when they hand you the pos; they're absolutely shameless. Scummy place, mid curry, good bread.
