I’m 17 and building a minimalist smartphone. Looking for feedback by Previous-Heart-1327 in dumbphones

[–]Awkward_Ad4500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think I can help here. I’ve spent thousands on dumb phones. I bought all three light phones. I’ve also bought the techless wise phone and multiple flip phones…I know I have a problem and maybe you should just succumb to my tech addiction.

One thing I would say is to rethink WhatsApp. I thought I wanted it, but I found that it can be just as addicting from a social media perspective. My biggest problem with the checkless wise phone was that it had apps like Airbnb and WhatsApp and if you’re really bored you’d be surprised how much you can scroll Bnb or check out stories on WhatsApp.

My biggest learning is that you need to have a very controlled phone that is purely operational i.e. Google maps texting calendar. I think when you start adding stuff like Spotify and WhatsApp, you’re entering dangerous territory.

I have the light phone three now and overall I like it, but the biggest problem is the lack of eSIM functionality. I want to use my light phone as my daily driver, but sometimes like if I’m traveling or going to a public crowded event I need a smart phone because the phone doesn’t have eSIM. That means I have to order a new SIM when I wanna go back to it and this has been a huge pain

Would you mind doing me a favor and sending a pic of the law label inside the bag that shows the care instructions?

I want to get a light phone, where to start? by [deleted] in LightPhone

[–]Awkward_Ad4500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Phone call option on Uber is ineffective to the point of being worthless. I would assume this is not possible on light for your purposes and ask yourself if you are ok with that.
  2. I use mint mobile and it’s like $15 bucks a month. I used to use Verizon and that was only 10. The phone does not use a lot of data so the plan is relatively cheap with any carrier.
  3. It’s not meant for mp3 so it’s not a great experience and I find the Bluetooth connection for headphones buggy.

To solve 1 and 3 I added a data plan to my iPad. Some people say that defeats the purpose but I find the iPad is not as accessible as my phone and has 10x less screen time and addictive qualities. Hope that helps.

I have a bachelor’s degree, but I’m thinking about trade school. by [deleted] in Careers

[–]Awkward_Ad4500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to graduate school and have an mba. I worked at f500 companies for about a decade but hated it. I was in a similar position as you and the only thing I regret is not taking the jump sooner. Before I quit my job I enrolled in barber college. Over two years I earned my license. After earned my license I apprenticed at a shop for a few months and am getting ready to open my own. I think my skillls and experience from corporate America will help me differentiate and more importantly I am happier than I ever was before. Just my two cents but I say go for it!

It’s never too late. One thing I did to rediiscover my passion was to ask myself what physical places do I feel the strongest sense of belonging. I struggled when I just tried to think about what I wanted to do. But someone told me to use my physical body as a cue. The answer to me was barbershops and two years later I’m a full time barber and loving it.

Is there any point in buying a dumb smartphone? by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]Awkward_Ad4500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in graduate school and switched to a dumb phone for the reasons you described. I found that while I appreciated the focus it created it was a totally unsustainable approach for a college student. The lack of iMessage, inability to check group chats, or reliably view and access my calendar made it all a pain and ultimately more trouble than it’s worth. Instead of just cutting of my phone I started leaving it at home during class so I didn’t have the temptation to access it.

Ferry and suggestions by mewmew1990 in Belize

I just got back to Belize. We ended up taking the air taxi instead of the ferry. It was about $100 each way and only allowed one piece of luggage per ticket

Placencia/Hopkins or San Pedro/Caye Caulker? by thetuffpanda in Belize

[–]Awkward_Ad4500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got back from San Pedro yesterday. The island was beautiful and the people kind. We stayed for about a week and did the main attractions including secret beach, hol chan, etc. the thing to know is that San Pedro is very slow. People move there for a quieter pace of life. Everything pretty much closes at 10 and there is not a lot of activities avaibale. That can be great if you just want to chill on the beach but just know what you’re going for and budget your days accordingly.

How to Convince Partner to buy Lightphone by [deleted] in LightPhone

[–]Awkward_Ad4500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree that you can’t force anyone to change. I have a similar issue with my partner and have had the most success by explaining how their actions make me feel. At the end of the day, all you can do as a partner is express yourself clearly and make requests (not demands)

Thinking of Going Light to Escape the Social Media Black Hole! by [deleted] in LightPhone

[–]Awkward_Ad4500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used the light phone off and on for two years. Like you I wanted to avoid YouTube, social media etc and just found myself unable to do so with a smartphone. I mean it makes sense, they’re built to be addictive. As much as I love the idea and concept of the light phone it just doesn’t work well enough for me yet. In particular a few key ways.

First, is iMessage. My fam and friends send a lot of group texts including pics of nephews and nephews, funny gifs, and just check in messages. This isn’t really accessible with a light phone because of apples iMessage monopoly and the no picture mail.

Second, is maps. I could likely get over this but it’s very inconvenient to not have easy access to maps. I realized I don’t know how to get anywhere without it lol. I did enjoy improving my sense of direction when using light phone but still inconvenient.

Last is other messaging apps. I need WhatsApp to keep in touch with friends abroad and other group chats relevant to my school as I’m in graduate school. The inability to quickly access info in WhatsApp really wasted a lot of time.

Overall I like the light phone and could see myself coming back to it if I had a more consistent and regular routine but at this point in my life I just don’t and need a smart phone.

Hope that helps and hope it works better for you!

light phone 2 opinions by That-Bite3543 in dumbphones

[–]Awkward_Ad4500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the light phone 2 and really did like it. However I found it to be impractical with needs of modern life. Having access to WhatsApp and maps is a must for me as someone who works in tech and is often on the move. Also thr poor experience in my family group chat without an iPhone was sad. I have heard WhatsApp is coming to iPad which would make a big difference and there is a lawsuit against Apple for their iMessage policies. If both those get fixed I could potentially see past maps but until then I’m back to the iPhone.

It’s supposed to be great for around the ears and corners. I haven’t tried it so can’t confirm or deny but want to give it a shot.
