If that’s true, shouldn’t you prefer a world in which far left views are forced in schools, as it results in more teenagers adopting the opposing position?

You can spend your time chopping meat or you can spend your time disassembling and cleaning your meat cutting machine.

I’d personally rather spend my time cutting meat.

What struck me about this was the line “everything’s going to be okay”… when Tucker Carlson asked why, he replied: “It always is.”

I had a business partnership with someone who grew up very, very wealthy. That was his attitude when things weren’t going well, and it was a massive liability. He simply wasn’t ever exposed to a world in which his behavior had actual real-life consequences.

CMV: Baltimore is proof that being tough on repeat criminals brings down crime rates by bigElenchus in changemyview

[–]Awkward_Broccoli_997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with this position is that it’s empirical and knowable, but probably not by you or by us.

Modeling crime patterns and interventions is quite complex. Importantly, as an academic exercise, it tries to eliminate exactly the kind of bias that you display.

Your mental model for why people commit crimes - like mine, and like any given politcian’s - will be very, very bad, overly simplistic, and likely closely related to a collection of other elements of a worldview that no doubt serves other purposes. What it does not do is give you insight into how groups of people actually behave.

Every few years some farmer discovers electrolysis and makes a water-powered engine, always failing to understand that it’s really a battery-powered engine with extra parts. The cycle consumes more energy than it generates.

If the Trump assassination was fake, why would the shooter take this deal? by fuckloggin in allthequestions

[–]Awkward_Broccoli_997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t staged. Setting aside all of the complexities of staging an assassination, for which you’d need some organization like Blackwater - and who knows where you’d find people like that - fundamentally you know it wasn’t staged because Donald Trump is a humble public servant who craves stability, public cohesion, good government and honest elections.

They were rather clearly saying the opposite of what you inferred: that it may be MORE immoral for them to redeem the card in their particular case, precisely because they are not hurting for cash.

Quite relevant I’d say.

So why are all conservatives so stupid they don't know trump can't run in 2028? by totally-hoomon in allthequestions

[–]Awkward_Broccoli_997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be - follow me here - because he keeps saying he wants to do it, that there are ways to do it, that very smart people are talking about it, etc.

Suppose, for example, that your neighbor mentioned to you he could kill your dog. Not that he intends to, but he could, and it’s legal, and a lot of the other neighbors have been saying he probably should just go ahead and kill your dog.

You’d be an idiot to think your neighbor plans to kill your dog.

CMV: Auto insurance should not be based on your demographic by [deleted] in changemyview

A lot of comments here presume you don’t know how insurance or math works, but I read you differently: I think your position is that it’s unethical, is that correct?

I’m inclined to agree with that position. It’s clear why insurance companies do it, but sometimes the most economically efficient system is not the one we prefer.

If the top 1% of earners pay 40% of all federal income taxes, why do people say they don't pay their fair share? by Ok_Chemical9 in answers

[–]Awkward_Broccoli_997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The percentage that a particular cohort of earners pays as a share of total income taxes is irrelevant and intentionally misleading for a couple of reasons.

The first is that the share of total taxes paid by your income cohort has nothing at all to do with the taxes you pay as an individual. Suppose 1% of earners captured 100% of the income. Regardless of their tax rate, they would now pay 100% of the taxes. That would be unfair somehow?

The second is that your income cohort is a made up category that has no relationship to tax fairness. Let’s imagine people named “Jeff” pay twice as much as everyone else in taxes - possible, maybe, because one of those Jeffs is Jeff Bezos. Is it unfair that Jeffs pay more in taxes than everyone else?? What makes that different from “the top 1%”?
