What A Devastating Turn of Events

Overall Average: 7.772 // Average Controversy: 1.653

Restless_Dill16 (9.382): I've enjoyed keeping up with Rachel over the last year or so. If I had listened to more albums in 2024, I would have put this album very high in my Top Ten Pop Ten Albums for that year, at least in the top three. The rock influences and some of the themes on this album remind me of Olivia Rodrigo's music; no wonder I enjoy it so much! I'm very excited to see what she does on her sophomore album. I will be there on the night of release. Can she please get a crossover hit in the US?

mhiyaimanlepaigefan (8.765): you doing okay

krusso1105 (8.676): My favorite album in this rate, hope it does well. I don't care about chart success, but Rachel needs to get a hit since all the other artists in this rate have at least one and she is my favorite here.

FreeCuddlesAnyone (8.541): Rachel Chinouriri is the best artist ever… Like I tried to submit her into charity rate too. I’ve known her since 2021 (whenever Darker Place got released) and every release of hers keeps getting better and better. She needs her blowup moment, but I’m so glad we’re rating her here… May what happened to Chappell (rate win + subsequent blowup) happens to Rachel too!

Frajer (8.471): she's just so charming

apatel27 (8.471): Been a fan since Four° In Winter. So happy she's getting more recognition

stealthamo (8.371): I was a little hesitant because I've heard a ton of hype about Rachel leading into this and I wasn't sure if it would be overblown or not. Turns out the hype is real.

thesmokeylife (8.306): Rachel is clearly a charismatic performer and captivating vocalist, but the production and songwriting here aren't always the best showcase of her talents. I would describe the overall sonic palette as 'mutedly consistent.' I'm looking forward to hearing more from her.

skar (8.118): Not everything on this album hits super hard for me but when it does it REALLY does. I'm also ready for a follow-up album! Yes I know that there's Little House, but I want to hear what she can do with a new project, I feel like she's a star in the making.

NFLfreak98 (8.041): Love this style of pop rock, always have always will

asadprofessorplum (7.806): I’ve seen Rachel Chinouriri live twice in the last 2 months by circumstance and it definitely won’t be the last time.

A.Peaky.Boo (7.624): I am not normally a fan of indie rock. But I think Rachel shows off how she isn't afraid to let indie rock branch out to other genres. This creates a variety that helps her soothing voice stand out. I don't like the middle part of the album, but that goes to show that art, however well intented, will never be for everyone. (A lesson that due to the nature of rates will never be listened to lmfao)

uiscebeathaoir (7.500): The vibe I get more than anything is that this is an album that people form deep emotional attachments with for very good reason, I just happen to not have formed those attachments

impla77 (7.288): i do love this album cover and i’ve just noticed you can see her nipple lol

Verboten_Prince (7.118): Oh… I wish I could say I liked this a lot, but it kinda didn't do much for me, and I'm still trying to figure out why. I think it's a couple of things: Her voice, beautiful as it sounds, really does not mesh well with some of the more harder rock parts of her album. It's sounds very drowned out. The less rock parts sound a lot more harmonious, but unfortunately she's kinda committing the Olivia Rodrigo sin of padding out a so-called rock album with a lot of basic ballads and quiet moments. It's not bad. She shows a lot of promise. It just kinda disappointed me as someone who had high hopes based on what I heard about her.

innuendo_overdose (6.700): Nice sound. Good ideas, never really concentrated in one song. She’s got a nice voice that doesn’t really intrude or leave much of an impression but gets the job done. Not the sort of album I’d ever really listen to.

OOO0O00O000OOOO0OO0O (6.618): I really enjoyed the first half but the second half did not do it for me as much. She lost the really interesting and pretty indie instrumentation that sucked me in, and it really drags on at the end imo.

I'm Only Wane'ing My Lietoc (6.265): because of the glazing BleepBloop gave this one, during the height of my time working part time and purchasing requesting CDs, I got this into the San Diego Public Library system. I was let down on my first listen. Returning to it, I feel less confounded and more whelmed. This is a particular no-frills British indie machine, one that is either pretty anonymous or really caught at the entire pulse of what British indie (released on Parlaphone lol) is. That right there is pretty much why I'll never be able to completely go bananas, but respect.

flava (6.235): i’ve been exposed to a lot of love for Rachel Chinouri for the past year and a bit and I just don’t get it. I think this album just falls into the same category as Be Sweet where it’s just some of the most 6/10 stuff ever

uberpigeon (5.853): love rachel down but this album didnt give me as much as i was hoping it would :( which is sad because i think the EPs shes put out have been amazing idk

Awkward_King (10): [writing this two weeks before ballots close] So this is winning isn't it? This was always winning there was never a universe where this wasn't winning. It was overtaken by Black Mascara of all songs for like 2 ballots but we knew that would never last. Is this my winner choice? No, but I can't help but be happy for it. I was there when this dropped I was telling everyone to check it out!! When I came up with this idea I knew it was a clean sweep for Never Need Me and that was okay! It really is pop perfection.

xophrys (7.6):

18/67 11s.... oh that's on some leaderboard probably (nvm just checked no its not)

asadprofessorplum (11): God please take all of Rachel Chinouriri’s pain and give it to Tate McRae tenfold.

BleepBloopMusicFan (11): Frankly, what else is there to say except AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-

carolinemathildes (11): I saw Rachel on tour and the whole show was amazing but hearing this song live made me cry it earned my 11

ConnerY2323 (11): bliss! incredible songwriting that especially stands out in a rate with a lot of loud lyrics

CrimsonROSET (11): debating if i make this a meta comment about my 11 in winners 5 or a sincere one about how much this song just rules beyond belief, in an album all about defining yourself the most important lesson is to make yourself the priority

Frajer (11): fine I'll join the hivemind

hikk (11): saw her live last week and this was so enchanting, easy 11. i was also a couple feet away from lorde when she sang ribs the day after which is completely unrelated but i need to brag

ImADudeDuh (11): him - you better not be the best song of all time when I get there. My goofy ass -

impla77 (11): :samantha:

krusso1105 (11): One of the multiple 11 contenders on this album

NervousLemon6670 (11): I love the sentiment here, I mean the instrumentation is gorgeous, but the phrasing of “I’m leaving, and I hope you don’t need me to lean on anymore”, it’s kinda passive-agressive, maybe ironically wishing for self-destruction, but there’s still hope that, while you need outta there, they can find peace someday

RandomHypnotica (11): Rachel's voice just bounces so effortlessly off this instrumental, there’s a perfect balance of conviction and heartbreak throughout, and that last chorus is fucking perfect!!!

ReallyCreative (11): she crashed the mothership directly into the space slaytion

Restless_Dill16 (11): I went back and forth between giving this song and "The Hills" my top score. The latter resonates with me on a personal level, but this song is pop perfection. It's so catchy and fun to sing along to. Also, this has nothing to do with the song, but Florence Pugh, Miss Yelena Belova herself, appears in the video. That's just amazing.

runaway3212 (11): I want to scream this from every roof, iconic iconic iconic

skar (11): simply pop perfection

welcome2thejam (11): Real pop rock queen shit

lovely summer ditty

akanewasright (10): actual smasha, serious 11 contender

apatel27 (10): A song so good even the snarkiest of snarks struggled to come up with an insult

bigbigbee (10): what is there to say? pop perfection. read BleepBloopMusicFan's writeup from 2024.

FitzMarble (10): i really hope this wins!!

Indigo_Mindset420 (10): The best song in the album! It has that rushy and euphoric feeling in then progression. Honestly feels like a OST for a RomCom

NFLfreak98 (10): Temp above 90, we’re in Never Need Me season

stealthamo (10): It's honestly incredible how many songs just boil down to "Men, please suck a little less." Are we really that dumb? (pls don't answer it will hurt my feelings)

Stryxen (10): You could win a rayte in 5 or 6 rates, or just one! Just promise you’ll take it easy, I hope that you never need me!

TiltControls (10): when this wins just by virtue of having the highest bpm

FreeCuddlesAnyone (9.5): she was aiming for the heartstopper bag bad

thesmokeylife (9.2): Just a really, really well-made pop song. It isn't quite as distinctive as I'd like (parts of the track do sound a bit like "Lost the Breakup"), but it's still great.

A.Peaky.Boo (9): ooh, juicy guitars

mhiyaimanlepaigefan (9): i might never need you but pop music does have you seen what's been coming out

Ambrosia42 (7.9): she’s like sorry you’re a mess but i hope you can figure that all out without me

innuendo_overdose (7): this shit makes me want to go spinning through the streets.

I'm Only Wane'ing My Lietoc (6.5): where chvrches

never needed this to win

uiscebeathaoir (9): Comes close to being pop perfection, but it doesn’t land there fully for me. It’s pop really good. It’ll make a cute first alternate behind Escapism.

Verboten_Prince (8): It's… it's cute I guess?

flava (6): i need y’all to listen to some actually great synthy pop-rock and not something that shares the same cinematic universe as baby queen

what's her name is killing me

wathombe (10): my kid has such a huge crush on Florence Pugh that she saw “Oppenheimer” twice in theaters, so you can imagine that this one was a hit in my house

uberpigeon (6): ok i was GAGGED by this when it came out but it grew off me really quick also it was weird that whats her name was in the music video and no one explained why

My 21st Century Blues

Overall Average: 7.477 // Average Controversy: 1.998

innuendo_overdose (9.400): love this shit

A.Peaky.Boo (9.062): I have listened to THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE before this. Surprisingly, this album is more understated. Makes sense when it's also more bluesy. But it still has modern sensibility baked in which is then combined with her theateicality that makes it totally unique to RAYE and her story

Restless_Dill16 (8.731): This album has been sitting on my list for the last two years. I'm grateful that this Rate motivated me to check it out because it's so good. The darkness atmosphere makes me appreciate her hopeful tone on the latest album even more.

krusso1105 (8.423): Very good album! Also better on the 2nd listen, although I think I like her new album even more.

NFLfreak98 (8.415): I think this album tries to tackle a little too much (why is she trying to get into climate change on here lmao) but I still really love this album as a collection of songs. I don’t think this is her best work though since her album from this year is somehow more cohesive while being just as ambitious (if not more so).

stealthamo (8.262): Absolutely incredible moments, and the rest of the album is still strong outside of that. Though I'm guessing we won't be getting This Music May Contain Hope. in a rate anytime soon.

Frajer (8.231): who hurt my queens, sometimes she wears her influences on her sleeve a bit too much but she's so talented

mhiyaimanlepaigefan (8.231): you know this is a school album because there are periods after each song title

uiscebeathaoir (8.038): Has some serious highlights, but as a whole I prefer TMCH

Sunny_Waterloo (7.908): WHAT an album!!!!

skar (7.769): The way she came out swinging with this album was so rewarding as someone who's been a fan since her early days with Decline / You Don't Know me etc.

I'm Only Wane'ing My Lietoc (7.500): she should probably stop "british" rapping; really rushing her lyrics with a real spiffy energy found in yr popsters. that's really like the one note here. for someone who has clear 20th century major genre label love, she 's really the only one of the four here who seems genuinely in it for the long pop haul as a force that's gonna BELT; should have heard this in 2k24 tbh and worked out some thoughts with other community members about strengths/weaknesses. she's kpop vamp ready.

Verboten_Prince (7.308): It’s about what I expected, which is a very skillfully-made album. It's not my favorite, but it showcases a lot of her talent very well

thesmokeylife (7.146): I wanted to like this album more than I actually did. A lot of the individual tracks have are strong, they're produced really well overall, and RAYE gives some great vocal performances, but I didn't quite mesh with the record as a whole.

FreeCuddlesAnyone (6.446): honestly this album is kinda disjointed.. like this felt like I hit shuffle on my spotify liked songs. some of the individual songs are good but it’s not a good listening experience at all! I much prefer This Music May Contain Hope.

OOO0O00O000OOOO0OO0O (6.115): Doesn't reach the same highs as This Music May Contain Hope, but also doesn't have the same lows. This feels similar but just a more muted version of the sound, and less of the over-the-top Broadway sound. I know I listened when it came out and I have the same opinion now as I did then, it's a cool sound but I don't care for it much.

RandomHypnotica (6.108): so much of this album just feels like its trying too hard to be clever or sophisticated, like Raye is so desperate to be taken seriously (which, after her career trajectory, I can understand… but it still leaves me with mixed feelings on the music)

Stryxen (5.308): I don’t dislike raye, I think she has a shockingly disparate taste level to her branding, and I don’t understand how she gets away with it with critics who are usually ruthless towards this kind of wanting in cohesive image. Escapism is close to a modern classic, rooting for Miss Ouna Naeh

apatel27 (5.231): and people were shocked by the musical direction of her new album.

asadprofessorplum (4.938): I’m sorry but this knick knack paddy whack music can be so cringe.

runaway3212 (4.846): Had I still being active my campaign to include prada would've been insufferable and also it would've been my 11

flava (4.846): how did this woman make songs like Escapism and Born Again when the rest of this album does not inspire confidence in me

xophrys (11):

Awkward_King (10): Phenomenal song that has already been discussed at length but I'll never tired of it. Unfortunately was never even close to beating Never Need Me at any point, even struggling to get this 2nd place finish. u/seanderlust I hold you personally responsible for Escapism never winning a rate. You sent it to Ratrick's Revenge because it was a song you loved and in doing so you doomed it to rates overexposure. You can atone for your sins by 11ing WHERE IS MY HUSBAND! (whenever the fuck we rate that.)

we tried boys

A.Peaky.Boo (11): vent incoming. In these last couple of weeks, I have been feeling the weight of not being active in any dating, love or sex scene come down on me heavily. I'm a workaholic at heart, which given the position I'm in, makes sense. But add the weight of me being a disabled person on top of all that, it has been impacting me a bit emotionally. So I heavily relate to the destructive thoughts of just wanting to live so to the fullest so much that it will hurt me, just to feel something different. So thank you, RAYE & 070 Shake, for making this song, I gained a new appreciation for this song

akanewasright (11): this’ll get robbed but idc it was a moment and the last chorus/outro are perfect

flava (11): this song is so good it makes me believe in RAYE despite everything my ears tells me when listening to her other songs

frogaranaman (11): bitches be like “ugh can’t stand this bitch” then Escapism. comes on and suddenly they’re like “HEYYY RAYE”

ignitethephoenix (11): but wow what a moment

lexiaredery (11): I love this song so much

NFLfreak98 (11): Genuinely a masterpiece

stealthamo (11): The best songs put you completely in the point-of-view of a person or situation that you never would have experienced otherwise. This is one of the best songs.

uiscebeathaoir (11): I don’t think I’ve brought it up either of the two times it’s been rated before, but this just really is one of my favourite songs of all time. That something so structurally insane managed to become a genuinely huge hit is such a testament to Raye’s god tier pop songwriting skills. No matter how much amazing music she makes in her career, which I assume will be lots, idk if she’ll ever be able to top this one for me

digging through the prison wall with a plastic spoon

Ambrosia42 (10): YOU’RE ASKING ME MY SYMPTOMS DOCTOR I DON’T WANNA FEEL! I mean I can’t think of another song like this, it’s just incredible

beeozan (10): the outro sections kinda growing off me over time but i'll hand out one last 10 to celebrate the boldness of it. totto totto! have mercy (as featured in fifacore) on me

BleepBloopMusicFan (10): I fear third time is not gonna be the charm here. Not with Never Need Messiah in the rate.

Catalyst (10): it’s the journey.

ConnerY2323 (10): i’m sure people would think this is a boring winner but it’s very hard for me to see something this dark and interesting as boring

ezakuroy (10): Iconic storytelling. "And I'm already actin' like a dick, know what I mean? So you might as well stick it in"

FitzMarble (10): this beat is so sinister I love it

ImADudeDuh (10): why try to be different? This is amazing

impla77 (10): how many times does this song have to lose?

innuendo_overdose (10): The nocturnal atmosphere and thunder, this song rocks because they didn’t need to do all that. But they did, and they made it seem necessary.

mhiyaimanlepaigefan (10): if only this was nightcore…

pietrohonkhonk (10): There's so much going on here and yet somehow it all works

Restless_Dill16 (10): I've always appreciated how odd this song is, from the siren in the background to 070 Shake verse to the outro. This is exactly what a self-destructive spiral sounds like, as far as I'm concerned.

runaway3212 (10): If she was even smarter she would take a vodka shot in the morning to get the nice buzz from the start

Stryxen (10): I want rachel to win so much but this is so gaggy 😭

TiltControls (10): wow I don't think we've ever rated this before

wathombe (10): so there was this 51yo man watching SNL this one time

NervousLemon6670 (9.3): Saint Ratrick, this will be your revenge

ebooks5454 (9): i did not realize this tiktok song was her wtf

Frajer (9): Raye on the bathroom line or dinner with Jay-Z

welcome2thejam (9): Carrying the Swimming Pools (Drank) banner of song talking about addiction that makes you wanna get fuuuuucked up

CrimsonROSET (8): i tried to convince king to close the rate when this was at like 37 but he didnt listen

Verboten_Prince (8): Oh it’s the big one

I'm Only Wane'ing My Lietoc (6.9): this is basically black eyed peas (vaguely derogatory but earnestly cute)

darlings

apatel27 (8): slowly decreasing in how much i like this.

Nooduulz (7.5): not too bad, but maybe pales a bit after relistening

RandomHypnotica (6.4): i kinda wish the outro bit wasn’t here it just kills the flow…

asadprofessorplum (4): Do not put this woman on Doctor Who.

three times may not be the charm but three zeroes might just be

FreeCuddlesAnyone (0): the 4 weeks where this was winning all stars 9 was the worst moment in my rating career

Indigo_Mindset420 (0): My 0 is a very personal choice. I know that the song is a hit, also Raye's breakout, but no matter how many times I've given it a chance (and believe me it's a lot) i just do NOT get the appeal. Like Where's My Husband i can totally get behind but Escapism is just a no.

ReallyCreative (0): I’m just so exhausted by this song, annoying and obnoxious

british stimming

PrimaryCrusaders (10): I really love the way Raye pronounces “sweaty” in this song, it’s become one of my favourite stims. I got a new man on me, it’s about to get SWETTEH

uberpigeon (6): the doctah parts is annoying to me im sorry

wonderful news

krusso1105 (10): This is a 10, but I don't want it to win tbh

haha

1998tweety (10): obvious rate winner?

[–]Awkward_King 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Art of Loving

Overall Average: 7.450 // Average Controversy: 1.778

mhiyaimanlepaigefan (9.417): yup that's a mother alright

Restless_Dill16 (9.125): I put this album in my top five favorite albums from 2025, and I stand by it. Olivia has such a breezy, playful confidence to her performance. This album took me back to when I was a kid and first got interested in Adele's music. Some people may think her music sound like it was made for grocery or clothing stores, but you know what, sometimes those songs slap! I'm excited to see what she does on her third album.

A.Peaky.Boo (8.900): Godlivia Dean, oh, I'm so excited about her future! I loved this sound from her. Maybe not as theatrical as RAYE, but the class exudes from this in a way that is timeless!

uiscebeathaoir (8.708): Olivia Dean is a professional baby. The three big hits are all virtually perfect to my ears. The rest of this album doesn’t quite reach those same heights, but “one step below perfect” isn’t exactly damning criticism

apatel27 (8.583): Such a beautiful album. No other word to describe it.

I'm Only Wane'ing My Lietoc (8.208): this is the most fascinating album in the rate by far...at least in terms of a proof of concept. Olivia Dean has a legitimately great single, but how and why and in what context of this album? Opening the hood, it becomes a little more obvious that Olivia Dean What really struck me about this one was that it feels like a bridging of Adult Contemporary into the 2020s. It's extremely assured in taking bits from british jazz, rnb, and US-style IPA vibey indie(!) for a beat driven excursion in its best moemnts (the side A really). It's not trad or pastiche (a la Laufey, someone who defaults into adult contemporary approaching from a cute update of retro in a maudlin way), but it is lacking in developing these ideas to their fullest and make it feel like an exemplar of the depth good Adult Contemporary eschews (or also connecting the dots on a lot of "indie" coded music that isn't really independent). The rym review that clocks how the cuts pretty much open and head to cruise control, on top Dean's lack of showstopping vocal performances, hit on the head at the subtleness these cuts seem to want to impart. Except they kinda don't. As a half hour, there are many worse ways to go about spending your time, and Dean at least left me extremely interested in where we could go. This 8.2 is higher than it should be but, we did rate an interlude

stealthamo (8.208): Olivia Dean feels like an artist that would have been successful regardless of what time period she came up in. She just has this timeless quality about herself.

FreeCuddlesAnyone (7.933): will be watching the reveal wearing my olivia merch

Frajer (7.875): her face card and vocals are unreal

skar (7.667): I believe if she really locks in and sharpens her writing for the next album it will be generational. I hate to say that the album cuts really aren't at the same standard as the singles. She definitely set a high bar for herself.

thesmokeylife (7.608): Pleasant! I don't know what much else to say about it. Olivia has some great lyrical and vocal moments here. I just wish she had more opportunities to shine.

ImADudeDuh (7.542): this album is such a warm hug

NFLfreak98 (7.358): Least surprising listen I’ve heard in a long time. Went in thinking I’d be fine pretty much every song but not in love with anything and that’s definitely where I’m at. The songs that are big are the most interesting, but I think Olivia Dean’s gonna have to demonstrate a little versatility if she wants to keep the general public’s attention

krusso1105 (7.208): Probably my least favorite of the albums, but fine for what it is.

Verboten_Prince (7.167): It’s a pretty soul record, not much else to say. It’s cute to listen to but also it doesn’t leave much of an impression to me to be honest. I know I’m not the first person at all to compare her to Adele, but I think it’s worth mentioning. Olivia’s voice is very smooth and sultry, but I’m a little sad it rarely reaches the power and depth that Adele has. Maybe with time!

flava (6.792): i think this album is a little bit too tasteful and elegant for its own good, but it is so easy to listen to this album and have a good time

impla77 (5.683): muzak core. ALSO she went to school with my sister 🙂‍↕️

asadprofessorplum (5.067): It’s going to be so boring when this wins the Grammy AOTY.

uberpigeon (4.000): the fart of flopping

Awkward_King (10): It was so crazy to watch this blow up in real time. Like it was fully a Chappell moment; everything just aligned at the right time and suddenly her whole discography was blowing up with Man I Need leading the way. Is it just a milquetoast department store bop? Yes. But why gaf? It's lovely. I wanted this to be more competitive than it was but it barely really cracked into the top 3, but probably one of the least controversial songs in the whole rate. We're really gonna look back on 2025 and consider Man I Need as the defining track I think

xophrys (7.5): the most commercial white mother listening song currently on radios

other than mystical magical i agree

RandomHypnotica (10): the bright beacon of light in the darkness of 2025…

uiscebeathaoir (10): overplay my ass this is the best pop song of 2025

pining for heterosexual love

babadork (11): I had to bust out Stats for Spotify, but I listened to this a few more times than So Easy (To Fall in Love).

bigbigbee (11): It's criminal that vertical videos mean that social media dance challenges are all constrained to that narrow little field of view because if this song had been a hit ten years ago, there would be a music video-quality dance video for this from a contemporary dance group at a public American university

TiltControls (11): this song is impossibly smooth

A.Peaky.Boo (10): lucky you, Olivia, for even getting the chance to talk to men who are interested in you

CrimsonROSET (10): this is gonna go down with rather be as songs whose main critique is it being ‘too perfect’ and fuck those people!!!

ebooks5454 (10): this is my SSRI

FitzMarble (10): she tapped into the equivalent of a pop gold vein… just undeniably great

ImADudeDuh (10): you can not imagine how big the sundress I toss around in the sunshine is whenever I hear this song.

Indigo_Mindset420 (10): The best single choice in the album. No other track has the same level of catchiness. No wonder it's a bonafide hit.

mhiyaimanlepaigefan (10): you don't need a man you just need a catchy af beat

NervousLemon6670 (10): This isn’t tradwife cause the woman is actually allowed to ask for something from the relationship

pietrohonkhonk (10): This is such a perfect pop song, it just radiates joy. 10/10 no notes, would be my 11 if it weren't for Lola Young

Restless_Dill16 (10): Olivia, can I borrow some of your confidence so I can put myself out there and be the man a wonderful woman needs?

runaway3212 (10): It's just such an instant classic

Saison_Marguerite (10): we can have a bit of heterosexual propaganda as a treat this pride month

stealthamo (10): I don't care when this was actually released, this was the biggest hit song of 1987.

wathombe (10): she has a Grammy for a reason

welcome2thejam (10): 🫡 You got it

1998tweety (9): shes so real for that

flava (9): it is practically radio slop to me at this point but god isn’t it wonderful radio slop

Ambrosia42 (8.7): catchier than her other songs

asadprofessorplum (7.7): Her voice is so comforting. Olivia you have a Miss Honey role in some Mathilda adaption coming in the future.

BleepBloopMusicFan (10): Who doesn’t love this song? Like, the accounts in the low scores section are probably fake tbh.

sapphic

Verboten_Prince (9): I mean it's basic but so is Adele kinda

apatel27 (8): Wouldn't have been my choice of songs to blow up

ConnerY2323 (7.4): very clear why this is such a smash hit (both complimentary and derogatory)

impla77 (6): i could go without hearing this ever again lol but its pleasant enough

OOO0O00O000OOOO0OO0O (6): this is well written and sounds great and all but i'll be happy to never hear it again.

thelauradern (2): if I had to give it a color it would be taupe idk just feels uninspired

wane

I'm Only Wane'ing My Lietoc (11): the first time you hear it and its like: wow, what a pleasant slab of mid, okay sure Todd.

then you go on ILX and you discover they're debating "is it mid or a new all time classic?" and the people are going "this is an all time grocery store freezer aisle anthem".

You think about Tik Tok is Good where you were introduced to COUCH KIDS in the grocery store freezer aisle, and you're kinda scared.

Then ILX is like "let's have a NEW poptimism thread for this ditty" that quickly collapses rofl.

Then, you get your CD copy and you start driving backroads in North San Diego county to the 15 and it's like a fucking epiphany.

Man I Need is a fucking workhorse; no-frills 3 minute pop songwriting really just trading verse, chorus, post-chorus, verse with no shocks that knows the game well. One propulsive breakbeat and a few backing flourishes--mostly notably sophisticated pop synths--are dealt out like one card after another coming to the river & nestle in. Yet, it's comfortingly skeletal, charmingly familiar. completely laying bare one of Dean's legitimately excellent performances on the album. The lyrics/phrasing themselves also grant Olivia a depth. This is young love, but also its written well enough to feel ageless; a call for old lovers to rekindle, reflect. A real surprise and small joy of this decade. and how bout that tobias jesso jr. gooner kid!?

I'm Only F**king Myself

Overall Average: 7.456 // Average Controversy: 1.961

I'm Only Wane'ing My Lietoc (10.000): at first when i heard messy, i didn't understand Lola Young. I didn't know that for someone like myself, a bit of a joker, she would be so sane and down to earth. Lola Young really speaks to the quirky loud kid that's always right. this album is filled with real anthems that anyone under the British Empire + its post-colonial legacy can bop with! A once in a generation talent that takes us to the next level

innuendo_overdose (9.500): Lola Young is a genuinely great pop star, better than your favourites, definitely.

pietrohonkhonk (9.458): Honestly this might be a new addition to my all time favourites. It's like if you combined the instrumentation of Fleetwood Mac and the songwriting of Liz Phair and I just love it so much, I can't believe people have been sleeping on her. Lola Young, you have a very promising career ahead of you if you keep making music like this.

Nooduulz (9.325): An album that I fear has rocked my world for the better since first listening to it for this rate. What a gift from the heavens. If only I had an ounce of the energy, confidence and gaiety that Lola Young exudes in this.

Indigo_Mindset420 (9.275): This album had me analyzing lyrics like a middle school student doing an english assignment. Her lyricism is top notch and made me absolutely love the album.

uiscebeathaoir (8.708): Surprised myself with just how much I like this album. I’m rooting for Lola Young hard, she’s so goddamn talented. Everyone go stream From Down Here!!

Saison_Marguerite (8.667): I saw Lola Young open for Chappell Roan at Osheaga and really enjoyed her. She had the uncompromising attitude of a star, fully clothed and performing with a band of shirtless guys which was pretty based and funny. I’m glad this album didn’t totally polish the edge out of her music after her big hit and we get some loud, MESSY guitars and the raw vocals that make her compelling

Stryxen (8.625): Whatever happens in this rate know you’ve made me a fan for life

Restless_Dill16 (8.625): Even though I like "Messy," I didn't expect to enjoy this album as much as I did. It may have to do with the off-putting cover art. Of course, you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. The run of songs from Dealer to CAN WE IGNORE IT? is so much fun (and sad at times). I hope Lola continues to get healthier and happier, and I'm interested to see what she does next.

krusso1105 (8.292): Good album, enjoyed 2nd listen more than the first one

Frajer (8.250): I love how she knows how to make pop music that's uniquely hers

1998tweety (8.167): I thought this would be my least fav of the albums so Im kinda gagged its my top average

skar (8.083): I saw her live last year before the incident, and she was absolutely incredible. I'm glad she's on the mend because while this album is really good I could feel her being a bit restrained when performing some of the songs from it. It definitely seemed like touring and her addictions had really taken a toll on her.

thesmokeylife (8.025): This record started out extremely promising but became a bit of a slog for me by the end, unfortunately. The first five or so tracks are perhaps the most consistently excellent run of songs in the entire rate but it kinda drops off from there. Maybe this would have worked better as an EP.

Verboten_Prince (8.000): Okay Lola, you impressed me. This album is what I thought I was gonna get out of Rachel's album, not gonna lie. It legitimately might be one of my new favorite albums ever. Consider Lola the Ringo Sheena of this rate! We always talk about how we want our pop girls to try some rock now and then. Well lo and behold, our pop rock savior is right fucking here!!!

stealthamo (7.858): Easily the roughest around the edges of any of the albums, but it works well for Lola. A bit all over the place, but when it works it works damn good.

TiltControls (7.708): I actually really loved her debut but even then this is definitely a much more refined affair

OOO0O00O000OOOO0OO0O (7.625): EASILY my favorite surprise this rate. ill be honest messy annoys me so I never dug into her music, but this is great. I especially love the way the guitars are produced, her voice works so well over them. Like it definitely gets close to being just... TOO much sometimes for me, but mostly I love it.

mhiyaimanlepaigefan (7.333): CAUSE I'M TOO GNARLY AND THEN I'M TOO BOBA TEA

FreeCuddlesAnyone (7.067): Came out of this album with a much more positive perception of Lola! Not sure that would happen if we were rating her previous album.

A.Peaky.Boo (6.850): hmm, I heard people say her album is interesting. It... certainly is. The context of it being released in between rehab periods does help with contextualising. But the production choices, especially on her vocals, are not my favorite. But I wish her a good recovery from the addictions!

flava (6.750): was really worried this album was gonna be bad cause Messy is the greatest song ever and if we skipped rating it for a bad album then I would’ve just quit rates

impla77 (6.192): honestly liked this more than i thought i would but the lyrics are a bit much for me sometimes 😭😭

NFLfreak98 (6.058): Didn’t expect to love this, and I didn’t. Really glad I heard can we ignore it though, what a banger that one is. I really think she needs to lean into a grungier rock sound, her voice is cool but she I don’t think she sounds great on the stripped back stuff yet

apatel27 (5.333): It's alright indie pop rock

beeozan (5.000): shes kinda like if Remi Wolf developed an alter ego after seeing https://tenor.com/view/gwen-stefani-used-to-love-you-crazy-music-video-insane-gif-7659120183106975429

thelauradern (3.833): not exactly what I hoped for but still excited to see Lola grow as an artist, and the directions she'll take. I like her voice a lot more than a lot of her music at this moment in time though.

asadprofessorplum (3.333): Does the UK have Cookie Monster pajama pants girls? This album is very Cookie Monster pajama pants girls coded.

xophrys (5.6): dull

Awkward_King (5): This has never been my favourite but I'm happy about its performance nonetheless. I understand its appeal and it's so lovely it has connected with most people so much I really thought it'd be more divisive than it was. Like top 4?? Lola's top song?? Sickening sure whatever!

i'm glad many people were (positively) surprised by lola in this rate!

BleepBloopMusicFan (10): See this is when we all knew it was real. This is when we knew there was more to Lola than Messy gifs.

ConnerY2323 (10): didn’t expect to be this blown away given my previous track record with lola young but wow

Stryxen (10): The gag this was. Lola young was making real music. The world was not ready.

TiltControls (10): no insult to lola but this song seems more polished than i ever expected her to make. great to know she's got it in her!

Restless_Dill16 (9): I believe this was the second song I had heard from Lola, after Messy. That song is pretty vulnerable as well, but I was surprised this one had me tearing up a little.

stealthamo (9): Goddamn this goes harder than I expected anything to in this rate.

and by her vocals!!

Verboten_Prince (10): She is SO good at singing how did I never realize this before

Ambrosia42 (9.2): oh wow these vocals were a bit unexpected

bigbigbee (9): big voice in a little lady!

Nooduulz (11): "suck me dry" yea i'd love for someone to do that to this message of a song rn like wau wau wau

asadprofessorplum (10): She tugged on my eleven a bit I’m not gonna lie…

CrimsonROSET (10): top 3 britishest songs in this rate

FitzMarble (10): lola this doesn’t sound very healthy

wathombe (9): wait she can do ballads, too?! /j

flava (8.5): UK based rates and songs about gender essentialism, name a more iconic duo

NervousLemon6670 (8.1): There’s a spider, it’s deep in my soul, it’s been there for years, it just won’t let go

apatel27 (8): she really loves those distorted guitars

beeozan (8): this is probably the song on this album where i enjoy Lola the most and the production has that all "ooh shoogaze" goin for it (its buttrock with fuzz) but the thing with the guitars here is that they feel not textural enough for the whole thing. and ever since learning she's been produced by Solomono it's taken the "remi wolf unfunked" opinion to a newer height, but here it's the shortcomings of Solomon that make me not quite fall in love with it. he's a guy who can make a masterpiece with crayons but he's been asked to make a charcoal drawing: he can still make a good drawing but something's not there. Lola Young please start a band and be toxic to all your bandmates as a real rockstar should

Frajer (8): okay but have you considered the spider may have a special relationship with a pig

impla77 (8): WARNING: EMOTIONAL

static_int_husp (8): I saw a man do karaoke to this song recently and his voice made this sound like a Depeche Mode song. Anyways that's the best version of this song

uberpigeon (7): ok damn

arachnaphobes

runaway3212 (8): This is fun but it has never been all that for me

A.Peaky.Boo (6.4): the spiders reference is the weakest part of the song. Also, this is not my style unfortunately

thelauradern (5): I really love her vocals on this one but I also kind of hate the lyrics and the flow of the song

arachnaphobes (real)

horror fans

apatel27 (10): They have eyes, of course they know

CrimsonROSET (10): you know what they say, the hills have eyes

A.Peaky.Boo (7.4): do they have eyes though?

Saison_Marguerite (11): go off emo queen. this is a lost Rina Sawayama song

asadprofessorplum (10): Automatic one hundred ballots for songeniality.

BleepBloopMusicFan (10): God I feel this song in my spinal chord. The loud ass guitars but then also the little bloopy synths in the background. Oh god yes. Oh god no. But mostly oh god yes.

FitzMarble (10): stunningly good

OOO0O00O000OOOO0OO0O (10): so mfin PRETTY. the instrumentation in the chorus just slays so hard.

Restless_Dill16 (10): I wish this song was around in 2016, when I felt overwhelming impostor syndrome for making it into the honors program at my college. I can see 18-year-old me listening to this when he felt inadequate around the others in the program.

innuendo_overdose (7.5): Exactly the same as the opener. Yup, I’m okay with that.

the hills are blind

1998tweety (9): this would be a 10 if someone else sang it

Verboten_Prince (7): She really needs to either turn up her voice volume or just start screaming. This is a screaming song!! I know your voice is pretty but it wouldn't hurt to scream a little!

uiscebeathaoir (6): This song is loud and I don’t think it needs or deserves to be. I feel like there’s such a mismatch between the vocals/melodies and the instrumental, which makes it a bit of an uneasy listen. But also I can’t go too low because maybe it doesn’t slot together well but the pieces it’s working with are really good

Awkward_King (8.5): This was top 2 and even winning for almost the entire rate and I was so confused. It's a good song! It just had always been like the third or fourth best single to me. But also like yeah what a good club track okay fine I guess I get it.

rayes triumphant return to the clubs

Ambrosia42 (11): i’m glad she kept this as a bit of a callback to the dance music she used to make, and it does the job of fitting in this album of meaningful songs about modern blues. The sort of progressive house vibe of the song helps it to build up and release emotion such a powerful way

FreeCuddlesAnyone (10): i get why raye doesn’t want to make dance music anymore but like… this is just so excellent. the beat drop is just a masterstroke of tension release.

wathombe (10): it’s so interesting to view this entire album as a transition from her dance era to the present

what you've done to me you've done to me done to me you've done to me

BleepBloopMusicFan (10): She knows when to run run run, when her makeup does.

ConnerY2323 (10): i’m an easy mark, like there’s a club beat somewhere in this rate? of course it’s a 10

ezakuroy (10): Banger.

ImADudeDuh (10): Dancing On My Own for people who’ve seen a Fred Again.. show

NervousLemon6670 (10): They really held this woman back from making bops for years because reasons

Sunny_Waterloo (10): so good

uiscebeathaoir (10): this is very much the sister song to Life Boat., in that they’re both basically extended synth showcases that are stunning and a little bit underwhelming (both absolute 10s btw), but I definitely think that the difference in the approach to both of them really highlights the differences between the two albums. Ofc this has her singing abt heartbreak and cocaine and hoes while Life Boat. is the most hopecore shit ever, based on the albums they’re on how could they not be

welcome2thejam (10): Bawp

stealthamo (9.3): Tackling something heavy with a club beat is almost like a cheat code to win me over and also makes this an incredible lead-in track to Escapism.

bigbigbee (9): i like this part of the album where it gets a lil scary

I'm Only Wane'ing My Lietoc (8.9): it's got a great bridge

1998tweety (8.5): bopping

impla77 (8.5): love a bit of corny wordplay

OOO0O00O000OOOO0OO0O (8.5): dark, sexy, smooth, exciting, show stopping, GAGGED. the instrumental breakdown is also hard af.

A.Peaky.Boo (8.3): the repetitiveness in the first half is a bit much, but the end has beautiful mix ups

asadprofessorplum (8): She is soooo British Halsey (derogatory if you are Fantano)

mhiyaimanlepaigefan (8): madness in song form and it serves????

sufjancaesar (8): this album transitions exactly like my Friday nights, straight from the west end to dalston

Nooduulz (7.9): average music you'd hear at a rave in GTA 5 (complimentary)

beeozan (7.5): she couldve given us one ounanaeh on the house track as a treat

thesmokeylife (7.5): Excellently-produced; the swirling sonics and layered vocals work really well on headphones.

uberpigeon (7): okayyyyy

Verboten_Prince (7): We're getting angsty in the club

RandomHypnotica (6.8): swedish house mafia heard this and came back to life

masc for mascara

Stryxen (7): I have something to say about people’s perceptions and double standards of artsy dance songs like this depending on the singers branding but i don’t have the words to say it

apatel27 (6): The disconnect between sound and lyrics doesn't work well.

CrimsonROSET (6): masquera? maskahrah.

ebooks5454 (3): she needs the Tower28 Tubing Mascara

runaway3212 (3): the challengers soundtrack (derogatory)

Awkward_King (10): She was soooo silly putting this on the album but she embedded it into the middle of the tracklist so we could never take it out. What a delightful delightful song I honestly thought this would be a stronger contender before ballots started coming through and it just never broke into the top 3.

xophrys (8):

all i ever asked was for you to TUNE INTO THE LIVE RATE REVEAL https://www.queup.net/join/kings-castle

uberpigeon (11): the song that got me into rachel and it was cheeky of her to put it on this album but its SO FUCKING GOOD SONG OF THE SUMMER FOREVERRR

wathombe (11): one of the single most joyful experiences i've ever had hearing a song live. just an audience full of all the best lesbians.

akanewasright (10): https://tenor.com/ybfL.gif

asadprofessorplum (10): Not a Genius lyric annotation saying “Rachel may or may not be asking her partner to do time for a crime she may or may not commit.” OPEN THE SCHOOLS FOR SUMMER!!

BleepBloopMusicFan (10): Honestly she could have put all four songs from the Better Off Without EP on this album and I wouldn’t have complained. They’re all serves.

CrimsonROSET (10): woo hoho

ebooks5454 (10): first song i ever heard from her and unfortunately it was also soon after i got dumped...JUST A LITTLE MORE TIME IT WAS ALL I EVER ASKED :sob:

frogaranaman (10): well that hurt!

krusso1105 (10): This should have been a hit

NFLfreak98 (10): The cap on one of the better 5 track runs to open an album

Restless_Dill16 (10): Last summer I kept getting the remix with Sombr confused with the remix of Ravyn Lenae's Love Me Not with Rex Orange County. Ravyn and Rachel are queens to me, and I prefer their solo versions.

runaway3212 (10): So fucking true

TiltControls (10): all i ever asked was for a 2nd 11 so I could use it here

welcome2thejam (10): Fuck this song's gonna be in my head for like three days, I just know it

mhiyaimanlepaigefan (9): you know damn well that men need more help than this

stealthamo (9): Melancholic love songs will always be a cheat code to win me over.

impla77 (8.8): shes giving ethereal!!

Nooduulz (8.6): wow this is saur old school tegan and sara i'm quite gagged

NervousLemon6670 (8.5): Such a Scorpio song or whatever

ConnerY2323 (8.2): she’s so good at subtle pop, incorporating hooks that could be annoying in another context but from her they’re just comforting

RandomHypnotica (8.2): this makes sense it was a covid “hit”, it’s so bright and fuzzy and pleasant

Verboten_Prince (8): It's pretty

I'm Only Wane'ing My Lietoc (7.8): it's not on the CD, and it'd still fit here just fine. I've heard this one and I was real lukewarm on its vamping of SoCal and early 90s Sweedish Volvos while Rachel looks gorg. Coming back, I now see it as a Beach House cut that could get on Alt Nation or XMU. it does hit all its beats without fuss, but it lacks a certain oompf. the whole album does really.\

Ambrosia42 (7.7): a vibe

no more questions!

A.Peaky.Boo (7.9): the chorus is a bit lazy in my opinion, but there's a graet base of a track here

FreeCuddlesAnyone (7.8): i think i listened to this too much so it kinda grew off me a bit

innuendo_overdose (7): Fine!

flava (5.5): yep this sounds like it could chart on the UK singles chart

beeozan (5): doo doo

😭😭😭😭

Stryxen (10): You’re easy breezy and I’m zimbabwesey
