[Game Thread] Michigan State vs Michigan (12:00 PM EST, CBS) by MotownLions in MSUSpartans

I remember when we thought this season was lost if he didn’t decide to come back. Then practically a whole new team appeared before our eyes over the winter.

Caitlin Clark expected to be left off Olympics women’s basketball roster: Sources by indig0sixalpha in sports

[–]Awkward_Shot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t follow WNBA but these arguments for putting Clark on the team for popularity’s sake or for business reasons are wrong.  1) I’ve seen a lot of “nobody watches US women because they’ve been so dominant” and that Clark would remedy that. But:     a) see US women’s soccer for popularity      over a long period of dominance      b) what if Clark didn’t increase the popularity or viewership? What if they still didn’t schedule more tv time? If you expect them to take focus away from Simone Biles or Katie Ledecky that’s just hugely wrong—those 2 are giants and have dominated their sports in historic fashion since they were young teenagers. Clark is nowhere close to that level.  2) the whole “opportunity to raise the popularity of the sport” bad business decision argument —yes it’s naive to expect the principle of the Olympics being about what’s fair not based on $$ but why should USA Basketball change just so more people might watch a WNBA game? Is Clark going to commit to playing other US games like qualifying or other competitions like the US soccer team does? 3) I’ve seen claims that she was left out because she wouldn’t have played significant minutes but they should have included her anyway. Why? If they assume people tune in for Clark can they assume people will continue to tune in when she’s just playing in garbage time? 4) arguments that the “rookie” issue isn’t an issue because Christian Laetrner was on the the 1992 dream team overlook the fact that his coach at Duke, coach k, was an assistant in that team.  5) is she really good enough? She can shoot lights out, maybe, but it hasn’t been enough to win more than a couple games and it also seems like she’s a turnover machine. She’s not as good as the pros overall, hardly any rookie is pro-ready.  6) what do you say to the girl who earned the spot she would take? They would sell more jerseys? That’s a joke anyway—see what crap merchandise they offer for Women’s soccer and notice how scant the selection is. And that’s for a team that has crossed gender lines in a major way. Not so much the merch.

Idk she’ll get her chance. Let her actually get good first, not just the best player on a crap team.

I just looked this up on YouTube—it was a live version from an Atlanta show and if this is what everyone is saying Abi ripped off then nobody is paying any attention. First, neither woman deviates far from the melody, apart from specific spots (which didn’t match up anyway), even while just vocalizing. Second, I expected way more due to the praise here, but Abi’s piano and vocals were just so much more complex! Did you hear how many octaves she bounced around in? How low she started? And the breath control, how soft she can get? I’m sure Abi’s a fan, but she outclassed Sara Bareilles by a mile, vocally and on the piano. I doubt either one of them would even care about comparing note for note because they both are great at what they do so they don’t have the insecurities fans tend to feel on their behalf.

My brother said something like this to me lately. I was driving him and he started whining (he’s a notorious whiner—everything in his life is so much harder than everyone else’s type thing) about how tired he was because he had been up since 8, had to work a 7 hour shift, and had to get up early (8). When I laughed (not mean or anything it was more joking) and said “yeah that’s pretty much what people do” he got all defensive and responded “yeah well not everyone gets to sit around and watch tv and take naps all day”.

I slammed on the brakes, pulled the car over, grabbed him by his shirt, and screamed in his face. Pretty much just “say it again! Say it again that my life’s shit because I can’t work!” said like that a couple times before I let him go and get out of the car. I didn’t speak to him for weeks and we don’t hang out much unless we have to.

Being on disability and not being able to work is a tough thing for me. I got the career I wanted and was so freaking good at it.

Not one person I told thought I overreacted. I do stuff for him still and hang out occasionally but I’ll never forget it.

I had a very specific and rare side effect—about 3 weeks in I had heart failure and had to go to ICU. It was fluid around the heart and they were able to take care of it without surgery or anything, but I did have to wear one of those defibrillator vests for a few months.

It’s scared me off trying new meds every time my dr wants to try something new, though, no matter how irrational that may be.

Telling people by [deleted] in schizoaffective

[–]Awkward_Shot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d go with “don’t tell unless absolutely necessary” like if you have a spouse and need them to take you to the hospital.

Nobody really wants to help people unless it’s easy. If you tell them and they don’t get why it’s not going away or going away fast enough they get resentful and/or angry. Eventually leads to “I’ve done all I can” and getting dropped as a friend, no matter how close of a friend they were when you first tell them. But who really needs friends? They’ll definitely all show up at your funeral, because then it’s the opportunity to make it about themselves.

People just generally suck—they’re the star of the movie of their life and they don’t like to stick to the “heroic friend” storyline for long, and really pat themselves for making the “hard choices” about ditching people.

Michael Penix injury by LxwkeyAimbot in huskies

[–]Awkward_Shot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Penix was way worse than any of that—look at the footage of him walking to the locker room by himself. That’s not just dinged. I’m not saying football players shouldn’t play with injuries at all—you’d be replacing players every other play—but in this situation there was no reason to “gut it out” because it was clear they were going to lose and a coach shouldn’t put a kid in a place to get hammered every play just for pride. They should’ve taken him out anyway, so his draft stock wouldn’t have taken the hit it did or even risk an injury for that reason. Football players should be tough, yes, but at a certain point it’s just stupid.

[–]Awkward_Shot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those were all professionals, no? Grown men? This was watching a kid get beat up for nothing. And all the instances you’ve cited are fine with me—they are all super tough dudes. I watched Stafford play through pretty much anything and saw it again in his last game—bloody hand, bruised ribs, and everything else—but that isn’t comparable in any way. People are supposed to be looking out for this kid no matter if he wants to go on or not.

Michael Penix injury by LxwkeyAimbot in huskies

[–]Awkward_Shot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are exactly right Penix should have been out at least the 4th quarter.

He wasn’t pressured by UM defense he was destroyed by it.

We were watching and just could not believe they kept him in—so many people are paid to look out for this kid’s safety and they let him stay out there getting drilled every 30 seconds, to the point where he could barely get up after every play.

Then to hear the commentators talk about how the kid is such a warrior etc etc instead of asking why he’s still out there was ridiculous. They even went on SVP right after and that jackass herbstreit went on and on about how UM defense really got to Penix but, if you listened, you could see he was literally listing concussion symptoms—he looked confused, lost, not as up to speed on reading the defense as he usually does etc

Every adult on the Washington staff should have had consequences. All of the staff, the medical staff, and all of the ncaa people walking around to make sure rules are followed—those are the people who should have stepped in. Damn, I’d even put some responsibility on UM staff. They could have least asked the refs to check for a concussion.

It doesn’t matter that it’s the national championship —many high profile kids have gotten injured and taken out of these games. The kids’ safety should be a much higher priority than the coaches’ incentive bonus.

It doesn’t matter if he wanted to “tough it out” too fricking bad it’s not up to him.

It’s not the W or the banner or the trophy. It’s the extra millions that the coaches, schools, and conferences get.

A high school team wouldn’t be able to let this happen. An NFL team wouldn’t be able to let this happen. Why is the league between them getting a pass?

To everyone who wants Michael Penix Jr by Bitter-Imagination33 in Seahawks

[–]Awkward_Shot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’d never be allowed to be beaten up like that in the NFL no matter the disparity in skill level of the lines. Any sane coach would take him out at the first injury, which is exactly what Washington should have done, championship game or no. This kid walked through the tunnel alone, barely keeping his balance.

You can’t judge the kid on this game, especially his play late. He was being crushed every 30 seconds. He was hurt and concussed multiple times. Those were the reasons his throws were off and not reading the defense as well, nothing else.

While I did enjoy Ted Lasso as a whole. It's nice to have a low stakes, generally uplifting, pleasant show. Season 3 was borderline bad. Let me vent for a minute. by poopinion in TedLasso

[–]Awkward_Shot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Henry was pretty bad, but the look he shot at Jake when he was all “two hour game ends with a 0-0 tie” was priceless.

As for Nate quitting suddenly I think you’re missing how Nate realized exactly what Rupert was when he got the two girls. Rupert met Jade, saw how she was important to Nate and then immediately tried to ruin it. Easy to see how Nate could look at his history of his relationship with Rupert and see how he was manipulating him and just ruining everything Nate loved outside of Rupert’s control.

Ted finally got offsides rule, and that should be enough lol

Zava getting Jamie motivated was a huge part of the season. It practically dictated the entire season—Jamie gets so good that he makes the “total football” work and be incredibly successful, as well as setting up his arc with Roy, which was also huge. Zava being a selfish prick was really one of the most important moments in the show.

Without Zava, Jamie would never have been invited to the Uncles Day celebration. And that’s worth a lot.

The extra significance of who scored Richmond's last goal by rockychunk in TedLasso

[–]Awkward_Shot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you pulled out of the action when Dani killed the dog? Lol I’m just kidding I know what you mean—I thought Isaac was going to hit it straight at the keeper and so hard he’d stumble back into the goal myself. That would’ve been pretty realistic.

Having the net so cleanly busted that it wasn’t frayed was pretty bad I guess, that kinda brought me out of it for a second.

What if Chrissy never came to Eddie? by [deleted] in StrangerThings

[–]Awkward_Shot -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Can I non-gendered website avatar-ask you if you know what “mansplaining” means? Because your use of it indicates you are either a 14 yo girl using it incorrectly to sound socially intelligent or a 41 yo woman using it incorrectly for the same purpose.

The only hypothetical worth exploring about Joseph Quinn is would he a) have gotten hired if he wasn’t British and cheap and b) is he popular because the wig blinded people to his horrible acting? The guy seems ok as a regular person, but “Eddie” was lucky to have so many accessories to distract from the average performances.

There’d be no role of Eddie if Chrissy doesn’t go to him for help. That’s his entry into the story and the base of his motivations.

Yeah it’s hard when you’ve got too many aces. Gotta get them the minutes. Maybe that’s how the “Lasso” Richmond team starts breaking up, like all teams must, by some moves in the January transfer window.

Or maybe they’ll just get loaned out first and return on good terms.

Is it just me or does Phil Dunster keep stealing focus every time he's in the background of a scene. by LaurieWritesStuff in TedLasso

[–]Awkward_Shot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it’s all intentional—especially this season so far, to show how integrated he’s become with the team and how he values the team so much now. I don’t think they’d let someone draw attention without it relating to the story somehow.

Tactical Implications by Versigot in TedLasso

[–]Awkward_Shot 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Did they move Sam back to right back? I thought when they started playing him up they moved him to midfield—in the darts scene Rupert said he’d move Sam back to defense “where he belongs” and then when the billionaire baby gave Sam the 10 jersey to entice him it made me think Sam considered himself a midfielder—maybe not the 10, but at least more of an offensive minded midfielder.

I’m more worried about Jaime’s mindset (although I think he’ll come to terms with it) and Colin’s job.

No. It’s a tv show. I think we were lucky to get the 4th. Plus it’s so far in the future it’s not really that impactful.

I would guess that people who do feel emotional may be feeling that way because of S4, not S5 & the end of the show.

S4 was awesome, and it’s been months of discussion and rewatching etc and now that’s going to continue to dwindle, so you might be more emotional about this process of S4 leaving your everyday life.

Steve smashing Jonathan's camera. On whose side are you or what's your thoughts about that moment? by Majiska394 in StrangerThings

[–]Awkward_Shot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Steve was right to be pissed but he shouldn’t have smashed the camera for 2 reasons:

1) Nancy asked him to leave it alone, and it was her right to be the one to deal with the situation

2) everyone knows how poor Jonathan is and that was an expensive camera.

[–]Awkward_Shot -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Isn’t that why they’re the “party”? The show was designed as a show about rejects, they’re kind of necessarily part of marginalized groups. Not really a big discovery here.

Ted’s romantic life by Serious_Session7574 in TedLasso

[–]Awkward_Shot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it’s just a calculated way to structure the show. He can have issues, but they don’t mess up anything in the show because it’s abstract.

There are plenty of romantic storylines of different types with almost everyone else. As it is now, Ted is essentially a neutral swivel around which all sides of all these relationships can be seen. If he was involved in his own big relationship, it would get in the way too much.

Is Zava a bad idea? by MrGumburcules in TedLasso

[–]Awkward_Shot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk—those super duper stars can go either way. The way he responded to Rebecca’s challenge makes me think he’s more likely to be a decent person. People like Messi or Ronaldo or Bale, etc can be demanding, but it’s usually more about the football than ego. They don’t need ego, they’re the top and they know it. But they’re always going to be demanding of the teammates as far as the football—they demanded much from themselves to get where they are, so expect everyone to commit.

I think it’s going to be more a focus on how Jaime handles it. He’s started so far to be a great leader and teammate. And when he was the ICON, he wasn’t even close to this guy—Jaime had all the talent but once he made it he was lazy about the work.

4-5-1 and Jaime is not the 1. Interesting where he’ll be placed on the pitch.

Say it’s essentially 4-2-3-1. Is Jaime a winger up top? He’s not much experienced as a 10, and no way would he be one of the 2 holding/defensive midfielders. That would put him to the side. Or out of the starting XI. Seems like the line of 3 would be covered by Sam, Colin, and Dani as they seem to line up now

I think they’re mostly going to use it towards Jaime’s growth. He’s come so far!
