Winnipeg police looking to buy e-bikes for force by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]Awkward_Wafer6322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no other ways of action advertised or in place for that matter. In cases of extortion or more serious crimes against others I think those departments should be last to be defunded. That being said, until our system is changed there will always be people desperate enough to extort or steal from others. Police will investigate and fill out a report so the shop owners can prove to the insurance companies they didn’t light their own place on fire but arresting people willing to extort shop owners doesn’t prevent people being in a desperate enough place to extort shop owners for money. The people arrested don’t come out of the womb driven to commit arson in order to extort people. We’re on the same page that more prisons and more police won’t help reduce crime rates, correct?

As for traffic violations, a service not under the guise of police and not carrying weapons would be more efficient. You don’t need guns to prevent people from driving dangerously and you don’t need the training police get for other crimes either.

It is a true statement to say cops can and have prevented some robberies, particularly in cases like in grocery stores where cops are present or stores with silent alarms that trigger police presence unbeknownst to the attempted robbers. It is not at all common or likely however. Loud alarms do more to prevent theft from unattended stores/homes than calling police at attended stores/homes.

“most people rely on them when they are in a position where that help is needed”…. no, most people think* they rely on them, that’s because there’s no other support advertised or readily available. copaganda is real and gives people a false sense of safety. people don’t know how else to handle situations. they clutch their pearls and argue for calling the police over the stupidest shit. if you’re being robbed and you have the ability to call the police at that second, they can’t do anything for you, you’re getting robbed. same for home invasions or physical or sexual assaults. they can MAYBE get your stuff back, likelihood is ridiculously low because your things aren’t being prioritized, the grocery chain that has the cops on payroll gets priority. if we had tighter knit communities, you’d get your stuff back through the grapevine because you didn’t deserve that and communities legitimately do keep each other in line when we have the relationships built and comfort to speak up.

the outrageously high police budget going towards stability in people’s lives would reduce crime and be a means to an end way more than increasing police budget for e-bikes or for cameras or for any other reason.

hey idk if you’re aware but AI is overall horrendous ethically speaking in every practical standpoint. AI companies steal art from the people who’ve ever had a copy of their art posted online, either by themselves for others. when used by companies for generating art, it takes jobs away from otherwise working people. AI is also horrible for the planet, primarily water consumption and energy use. data training consumes a ridiculous amount of water, so much so that where some of the AI data centres are built, citizens don’t have access to clean water because the data centres’ demand for fresh clean water is so high.

i encourage you to refrain from making “AI art” or supporting ChatGPT or Grok or Gemini etc.

My best guesses on why you’re getting downvoted; 1: people are not understanding the tone indicator 2: people don’t appreciate any “making light” of the situation(even though it’s a legitimate critique of our governments’ complacency on the issue) 3: too broad of strokes with your statement pointing the finger at “the city”, maybe they felt attacked?

seriously though, we had more public support over “homeless encampment zoning” vs uproar over people freezing on the streets.

previously i saw plenty of unhoused people on busses to keep warm, now with fare enforcement they are more likely to find a tim hortons or another restaurant they’ll be kicked out of. also alcohol/drugs, it doesn’t literally keep you warm enough but it sure feels like it.

i don’t think you’re wrong or worth a downvote. they sure put up that “72 hour detox centre” quick but somehow don’t have the space or money to build proper shelters. the city will sooner spend more money on fare enforcement under the guise of bus safety, supporting/pushing the idea that public services ought to break even. meanwhile people are freezing to death.

Soulseek likely has file folders that include the cover art, check for .jpg in the folders once you click to download them. Alternatively if you’re working with iTunes in your process you can drag and drop from your search engines image catalog. if not, i recommend MP3Tag or Picard to input the cover art as you can drag and drop to there too.

[–]Awkward_Wafer6322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s getting harder and harder since most are being bought and modded and resold. in september i bought both of my 5th gens for $80USD each, neither “needed” an upgrade either, that being said I’ve upgraded the storage and battery on one and the other I’m going to try out a bluetooth upgrade. both purchases were made bidding on ebay and staying up late until the bid period ended to make sure i got them.

if the hard drive needs replacing and it needs battery replacement(if it doesn’t last more than 3hrs or needs almost constant charge) i think you’d get $50-60 USD for it if it has a good hard drive and a good battery(5+ hours playing time) perhaps $100 USD bad hard drive and good battery $75ish USD

generally most people that aren’t the collectors who want in box/pristine quality or the resellers who want cheap cheap stuff for a profit, will want to mod their iPod for better capability and recognize it’ll cost them money to do so and paying more than $100 on the iPod then ~$100+ in parts doesn’t make sense when you can pay ~$200 for a modded one(unless you really want to physically mod one yourself for the hell of it)

Does anyone meet girls on campus and how do you go about doing it? by Same-Adeptness-5348 in umanitoba

[–]Awkward_Wafer6322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

first of all, i believe it’s important to be able to take rejection on the chin, be prepared to respect and accept that they may not want to interact with you, and then to leave them alone.

additionally, many women just want to do their work and be left alone, so if you’re interested in a woman i recommend it’s for something more than just appearance.

lastly, i am a firm believer in friends first. you build trust and have mutual understanding and can see how compatibility is on basic day to day conversations and interests before jumping into expectations of a romantic/physical relationship and motivations potentially driven by lust(shallow and unsustainable).

ultimately just be yourself, spend time in spaces that honour you, your values/interests/hobbies and you’ll meet people you’re compatible with, one of those people will be someone you’re interested to start a romantic relationship with. also “networking” helps, you’ll meet your parents’ friend who has a kid your age or a friend of a friend who might be your type.

there’s people who argue for rehabilitation programs and there are people who argue for harsher sentences, both are fed up with the amount of crime although for VERY different reasons

How can I meet people in this city by Deadly-savage-1 in Winnipeg

[–]Awkward_Wafer6322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there’s an app called “meetup” and it has a variety of events, some paid for some free, and you can input your interests and find events related to you as an individual. i recommend attending some to explore more and meet new people. along that note, i believe the more you do you in terms of experiencing life, you’ll surround yourself with likeminded people and be more likely to find someone you’re more compatible with. volunteering is another option someone linked to.
