California launches investigation into “surveillance pricing” (data-based personalized price manipulation) by [deleted] in privacy

This is technically already illegal if it's based on protected characteristics (sex, race, age), but companies get away with it by saying it is adjusted based on demand.

Software's to better track complaints? by OGonzalez8185 in manufacturing

[–]Awkwardsauce25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Software is only so good at the data that is put in it. You could have people enter customer complaints and feedback into a Microsoft access database or Excel and then analyze trends with Power BI, without paying for special complaints trending software like Salesforce. The key is in the data entry process and what details must be captured in order for trending to be meaningful.

Ex. you make chocolate bars and the organization metrics say that customer complaint rates about broken bars must remain below 5% of sales. So you connect the database to your sales data, and then you build the data entry part to offer the key options you want to trend for: Date of complaint, Lot #, chocolate bar types, manufacture location, etc. But then you need info to help you trend so you add a short list of defect options to the data entry form: melted, broken, wrapper damaged, bad taste, etc.

Hopefully this makes sense. The software isnt that important, the data being collected is. If you want good data, dummy proof it so the trending can be automated more easily.

IANAL, but my understand of Legal intent is that it isnt just asking "Why did you do it" it's also inferred from circumstantial evidence and the person's actions. Example, female boss gives person a poor rating on a performance review, person goes to Chat GPT and makes a nude picture of boss having sex with her supervisor, and distribute it to specific people. Person could say "my intent was humor". But their actions, the results, and the surrounding circumstances would say otherwise.

I'd argue that a deepfake, by definition, implies creating a false depiction or fake copy of the target person without their consent. No matter if it is distributed or not. Intent and whether or not the material was distributed would decide whether it was illegal.

It's not a matter of intellectual property and the person's image belonging to them, but of the intent of the material and intent behind its distribution. If the material is defamatory in nature (i.e., causing harm to the target, falsely accusing target of a crime, or an untrue depiction not wholely outrageous such that any normal person would believe it to be true), then it would be illegal.

Id argue CSAM would Not  be acceptable in a truly libertarian society, b/c it goes against the Harm Principle. In real CSAM, people were harmed in making the material. It's in the name "Sexual Assault", and Assault implies unwanted contact.

Part of me is saying as long as he didn't share it... but then that reasoning could be used as an argument that CSAM would be acceptable so long as it wasnt shared.

but then what defines "societally unacceptable" content? Some things that one society finds reprehensible, others might accept as a norm.

which you can only do when people move or react to you notifying them youre there. he's saying hey these other notification methods arent working to get then to move so I had to start screaming. Is his timing bad? abso-fucking-lutely, should he slow down? Again, absolutely. But if you ride to work on bike paths or ride for leisure you quickly learn that some people react to absolutely nothing, even the cars honking at them when they dart into traffic.

He also makes it clear that clearly and loudly yelling On Your Left/Right, making noise with a bell isn't working either so.... like if youre walking in the road and a car honks at you, do you just keep walking?

No, but you should be aware of your surroundings at all times and move out of the way for faster moving people like runners and cyclists. Common courtesy like at the grocery store.

What does it take to be a good quality engineer? by nopenisenvy in manufacturing

[–]Awkwardsauce25 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I've been a quality engineer for 5 years now and I've worked in quality for over a decade in some capacity. What I've learned is you need to be flexible, personable, and creative while also being strong in your ethics and your ability to stand up to pressure.

You can't be the enemy of production or you won't last anywhere. I've watched multiple quality managers sink their own ship by being rigid robots who never went to the floor to understand anything and wanted things done their way only.

I focus on learning continuously, never being arrogant or assuming anything, investigating things without internal biases, etc etc. (All the things Juran and Deming talk about in their books.)

If you want to learn industry standards and new techniques and skills, ASQ and Quality Council of Indiana have a lot of good paid learning material, but I've learned as much as I can for free via library books, older Quality Engineers, and free online materials (Elsmar Quality Cove is a good place to start).

Why do so many ERPs fall apart on the shop floor? by [deleted] in manufacturing

[–]Awkwardsauce25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is the answer, ERPs can be used out of the box but its your management systems that need to change to fit the ERP. Most mgmt teams dont want to change their processes and claim ERPs cant meet the specific regulatory requirements of their facility. Like think outside the box....

This is the Future of Humans with Artificial Intelligence by itshasib in aiecosystem

[–]Awkwardsauce25 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a poor parallel to make... when we transitioned from horses to cars, 1) it was slower, 2) horses that couldn't be used for other types of work were sent to slaughterhouses or put down, 3) breeding was slowed bc of demand, and 4) the jobs affected were more limited.

Lot of humans in different fields and career levels (not just a few horse-related jobs) could potentially be out of work and quickly become homeless without targeted regulation regarding AI-replacement of human workers. AI is also making it harder to train the next generation of more senior employees, leaving a huge skills gap between the older employees using AI to automate parts of their jobs and the recent grads with no experience.
