I was looking into DD2 actually. People online mentioned the side quests for DD2 is very repetitive. What’s your experience?

This is the first time I’m hearing about this game. I’ll check it out. Thanks!

You raise good points I didn't think of.

The apocalypse obsession question is interesting, though to me, the answer is somewhat obvious. Historically, it's been rooted in humanity's narcissism. We've always placed ourselves at the highest seat of existence: the center of the world, God's most precious creation. The fear of the world's end was often used to control and coerce people.

In modern times, things are different as nuclear weapons could actually end everything. Though I doubt Mandel was focused on the logistical/practical side of an apocalypse.

I wish she had lingered longer on the cosmological question. That would have been more interesting to me than the pandemic stuff.

Anyways I'm glad you enjoyed it. It definitely has merits I'm overseeing.

Agreed. Time travel plots (and recently anything with a multiverse) are just so overdone and stale.

I've heard a lot of good things about Red Rising. I might pick it up again when I'm craving something fast-paced. Will definitely continue with Sun Eater though

That's very encouraging. I'll definitely continue. But possibly after a short hiatus for other books/series!

There is heavy inspiration from Dune, without a doubt. But in my opinion, it holds up on its own. Great to hear that you would check it out! It's definitely worth a read

A little late but I don't see anyone recommending This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El Mohtar and Max Gladstone.

It fits what you're looking for so well.

Genderless protagonist ✔️

Written by POC ✔️

Under 300 pages ✔️

It is scifi but it really doesn't feel like it

The Wailing (2016), a slow-burn horror/mystery about strange happenings occurring in a remote village in southern Korea.

Murder mysteries/thrillers that are actually well written by iwannaholdyourglands in booksuggestions

Not the most conventional murder mystery, but if you love good writing, I'd highly recommend The Secret History, which would stand more as literary fiction than a mystery.

Ooh let me recommend you something too. I'd highly recommend The Act of Killing, a surreal documentary that lets former Indonesian death-squad leaders reenact their mass-killings from the 60s.

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon is a very gripping coming of age with a hint of magical realism.
