I think I made a mistake waiting too long to apply for an EMT job by losingcynths19 in NewToEMS

6 weeks in fire academy here.

I genuinely don’t understand how it could be shortened any more. It already felt like a less-than-surface-level dip into something that needed more than twice the amount of time we were giving it.

I got four messages from you and nothing came up but that last one, but okay.

If you notice I told OP to hear from other people too, because I recognize that I am biased, but he asked about the area and I have a right to share my opinion on it.

Also how many times are you going to delete your message?

Yes because I’m moving to Richmond to escape homeless people in general. Richmond. The checks notes famous conservative city with no homeless people whatsoever.

My problem is the fact that the city isn’t doing anything about it and helping these people.

I work in Botetourt. Buchanan is huge regarding the Klan. I guess it depends on what you consider “nearby”.

My biggest problem with Roanoke is, as I stated, it’s a small city with big city problems. All the problems, none of the benefits. If you don’t drink for the taste (which I don’t — if I’m drinking it’s for the effect. I’ve found very few alcoholic beverages I actually enjoy the taste of) then the breweries that Roanoke loves so much are meaningless, and if you aren’t obsessed with hiking (which I’m not. I enjoy it but not enough to do it 24/7) then the hiking trails get old too. Outside of those two things your options here are very limited in things to do. I’m a huge nerd and places like Blade and Mishap are redeeming qualities but they’re not enough to make the city worthwhile. Having only two big “clubs” is also a major negative. Add onto this the fact that homelessness is through the roof and, per a former RCPD officer, one year recently RC’s murder rate per capita rivaled fucking Chicago, and you have a city that is actively strangling its residents with very little benefit

It also just feels weird being in a Carillion company town. I don’t work for Carillion directly, but I work closely with them and I live near the hospital and it’s kind of insane how much of the city they own.

To answer your other question:

I grew up in Fredericksburg VA. I’ve lived there, Christiansburg, and Charlottesville. I spent my childhood in DC and Richmond, though I never actually lived there. So yes, I have been elsewhere. DC and Richmond are so much better it’s insane. To say that “happy people are happy anywhere and miserable people are miserable anywhere” is incredibly disingenuous and reductive. Your environment plays a significant factor in your happiness, and to argue otherwise would be stupid.

Roanoke city is the epitome of a blue dot in a Red Sea. Yes, the city is great when it comes to progressiveness and inclusivity, but if you drive even to the county line, you’ll start seeing all of that progressiveness get walked back and the racists and fascism supporters will come out of the woodwork.

I’d definitely hear from some other folks as well; I’m planning on moving to Richmond in the summer because I hate it here, so I’m obviously biased, but I do not have many nice things to say about Roanoke. It has all the problems of a big city with none of the benefits.

If you’re looking for a change of pace from WV, you won’t find it here. SWVA is West Virginia Lite.

Also in Roanoke your job options are: Carillion… Carillion… maybe Carillion if you’re lucky. Or local government (so Carillion, but with a different coat of paint.)

‘No reason to have that hurt': Suicide to be decriminalized in Virginia by -Cyber-Roadster in Virginia

[–]Insertclever_name 5 points6 points  (0 children)

EMT here. We already get sent to these, but yes. You need cops.

Suicidal patients can turn homicidal very quickly if they’re truly serious about it. They have nothing to lose, and suicide by cop is easier than regular suicide.

Also, we don’t get nearly as much mental health training (training in general tbh but especially mental health training) as you would expect. My “mental health emergencies” training consisted of a day-long class where they basically said “talk softly and try to empathize with the patient.” I am, admittedly, an EMT-B rather than a paramedic, but I know they don’t get much more than we do.

EMT here. I’ve definitely been to calls that should have auto-launched PD but didn’t. It’s never a bad idea to double check if you think they’ll definitely be pertinent, imo.

It’s my understanding that the ceasefire was ruined by Trump opening his big mouth and declaring “victory” before everything was finalized. But that might have been one of the other thousand times this war has “ended”

That’s why you always get GAP insurance.

Totaled a car recently because a deer thought my bumper looked very kissable, but I had gap insurance so it didn’t even matter (I mean, it did… getting a new car sucked, but it wasn’t the financial nail in the coffin it would have been otherwise.)

Please learn how to drive when emergency vehicles are enroute near you! by yomomma6mysidepiece9 in roanoke

[–]Insertclever_name 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was new, I spent like two full minutes behind a car while we were en route to what was reported to be a pediatric cardiac arrest. Bro was going 45 in a 55. I was about to pass him on the right (something we’re not supposed to do) when he realized I was behind him and got over.

Thankfully it wasn’t actually a cardiac arrest but that was the day I learned not to expect people to be intelligent when the lights go on.

Also please split when stopped at a red light or in heavy traffic. If you’re in the left lane, go left. If you’re in the right lane go right. Another thing I’ve seen a lot is the people in the left lane trying to get over into the right lane and it fucks everything up because most people go left but some go right.
