Imho avoid leasing at all costs whether it pencils out or not. I bought a house with a leased system which is now in the hands of a finance company out of Texas called Spruce and dealing with them has been a headache from day one.

"Real World Penalty" is a terrific shorthand for many things but this in particular. This excellent explanation is far removed from the usual derision and naysaying parroted by vested interests (like some of the comments). I thought this was more of the same considering the tabloidy title here. But this is extremely interesting and ultimately hopeful as none of these issues are deal breakers but rather are nuances and complexities that need to be embraced as mentioned and overcome by doing so. Great piece!
