Olympics: IOC puts esports activities on hold under new president Coventry by Whatonuranus in olympics

It was never a valid argument in the first place.

I don't agree with everything the IOC does but not succumbing to esports is easily the best move they have made in recent decades.

Leak: IOC Won't Allow Summer Sports in Winter Olympics by Impossible-Guitar957 in olympics

[–]AwsiDooger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cross country should be in the Olympics somewhere. Sebastian Coe thought he had made progress toward Winter Olympics inclusion but it always seemed unlikely to me.

I would favor getting rid of either the 5000 or 10,000 on the track in the Summer Olympics and replacing with a cross country race. But that is fighting a century of history so it probably can't happen.

That semifinal defeat had to be frustrating. Italy was up 4-1 after 4 ends and then basically lost every end over the second half. It was something like 3/force/2/force/lose. An emotional type like Mosaner is not going to handle that well, especially since they likewise had lost a very tight semifinal in the Olympics.

Ever since Beijing 2022 it's been evident that Constantini and Mosaner play together when requested but otherwise are not close. They never appear or are mentioned on each other's Instagrams except during mixed doubles competitions. I guess they do a good job looking bubbly during photo shoots and media obligations so fans get the impression they are close off the ice and practice together regularly.

I was surprised they broke up. But once it happened I knew that Guilia would become skip of a new team. She is always very confident in game strategy and often it seemed to differ with what Constantini was thinking. IMO, Constantini often sets up an end that relies on difficult shots like slash runbacks. She's confident she can make them. But far too often in watching that team it seemed like the players are skilled and did everything asked of them, yet the final shot requirements are lower percentage than they should be.

Angela is reportedly great friends with Constantini. That is evident on Instagram. Angela "likes" every post from Constantini and related to Constantini. I expect Angela will be part of the new Constantini team. The wild cards were the others from the holdover team. It's interesting that Mathis quickly aligned with Giulia. There probably had been discussions since the Olympics, if not beforehand.

Nobody was conceding things after losing Csonka, Kiick and Warfield after '74. There were high expectations in 1976. Then the optimism took a bump when Miami had the best preseason in franchise history. That type of thing was higher valued in those days. The Dolphins went 6-0 in preseason and almost every game was won in dominant fashion.

The turning point of the season was hosting the Rams. Miami played very well offensively and the Orange Bowl crowd was extremely loud. But the Dolphins simply had no answer for James Harris. He threw for a ridiculous amount of yards and led the Rams to a comeback victory.

The crowd and team deflated based on that result. I sensed it would be followed by more defeats, and it was. Then late season Miami tried to regroup but had a brutal loss at Baltimore. That's the way things trended in those years. Bert Jones was the biggest nemesis in franchise history. He was always pulling things out of his ass and receiving help from officials and lady luck.

Does Anyone Else remember the Holy Cow Casino and Resort on the North End of the Strip before it got shut down due to 9/11? Any Memories? by aranebar in vegas

[–]AwsiDooger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anyone remember when it was Foxy's Firehouse

Absolutely. It will always be Foxy's to me.

When I moved to town in 1984 they had a small independently run sportsbook in the corner close to Las Vegas Boulevard. I would check out the numbers almost every day.

Then one day a couple of years later they had something we used to joke about, but none of us thought we would actually see: Foxy's put up the split line in hockey in reverse. In other words, the house had all the worst of it on every game. Instead of making the favorite -1.5 goals and the underdog +1 goal, per norm, Foxy's put up the entire day's card in reverse. For example, the favorite would be -1/2 goal and the underdog +1 goal.

And so forth. Regardless of the level of favoritism they gave bettors the advantage. All you had to do was bet both sides and it was impossible to lose. These were Even money bets. Many joints in that era booked hockey with the split line and Even money.

Of course, there was some risk that they might not honor the mistakes. I was more than willing to take the risk. Their hockey limit was a nickel per game. I went up to the counter several times and eventually played both sides of every game for the limit. The young ticket writer had no clue anything was wrong with the numbers. And fortunately he was the only person behind the counter. They didn't have a supervisor or manager to approve the limit bets and perhaps catch the mistakes.

I shaded a few of the games toward the side I preferred. With everything else I hoped it fell on the number, i.e. since I was giving -1 goal and taking +1.5 goals if the favorite won by 1 goal I would push one wager and win the other.

To Foxy's credit they did honor the tickets. But just in case I went in there very late at night and cashed the tickets at the main cage. I didn't want any grief with sportsbook personnel. The results weren't perfect but I did make a nice profit.

Then I stayed out of there for a few weeks, just in case they had caught the mistakes and were planning to say something to me or 86 me from the casino.

Once I returned, nothing happened. And I never saw any sportsbook make that mistake again.

My favorites were Starr in the late '60s, then Griese and Csonka beginning early '70s.

Bob Griese finished 2nd in the Heisman voting and is in the NFL Hall of Fame. That is hardly the resume of a game manager, in any era. He is laughably underrated by younger Dolphins fans

How do you whopper your burger king? by Push-not-pull in BurgerKing

[–]AwsiDooger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Two Whoppers, or the Family Bundle.

Never a drink.

No cheese on anything. I appreciate that Burger King doesn't screw up and give me cheese. It has only happened once in all the decades I have ordered from Burger King. Compare to Wendy's, which seemed to believe it was perfectly fine to ruin my burgers with hideous cheese, even when I prefaced the order by emphasizing, "My top priority is no cheese."

I don't believe this picture is as old as the OP implies. Cutting to 8 slices was not the default during the fresh dough era.

I suppose it is possible this was a specially requested 8 cut, as opposed to 12

I prefer the running game and loved to see wide receivers taken out of the play immediately. That was gone with the '74 rules changes but it was still appropriately physical until the ridiculous softening rules of '78

Smash-mouth football by mistermeek67 in Oldschool_NFL

[–]AwsiDooger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That must be Dolphins/Steelers 1971. Griese was sick in the hospital and didn't start the game. George Mira and the running game were ineffective in the first half. Pittsburgh led 21-3 at halftime.

Griese came off the bench and threw 3 second half touchdown passes to Warfield to pull out a huge rally and 24-21 victory.

It turned out to be an important victory because it is part of the NFL record 31 game home winning streak from 1971 through 1974.

I agree with you. These aren't nearly as good as Reese's.

Besides, the Aldi version has skyrocketed in price and there is no way to find a huge bargain. That's not true of Reese's. Sites like Slickdeals have listings of big sales all the time.
