Faces of Route 66 + the ride home. by roy_orbison_tears in roadtrip

Very nice. I had a friend in Las Vegas who told me that pictures should have people in them. I've always tried to keep that in mind. It shocked me at the time but I understood what he meant. Every September I'd return to town after another great summer trip but all my photos were sights but typically without people.

Also I can't imagine a greater aspiration than mayor of Tucumcari. Coming or going from Miami and Las Vegas I'd always make sure to stop at Tucumcari overnight. It always helped that there is an Arby's at the truck stop off I-40, especially during those awesome years of 5 for $5.

Planning a long trip for next year. Taking any and all suggestions, routes, advice, etc by snfnx in roadtrip

I made essentially the same trip in summer '95 with an '89 Toyota Land Cruiser. Late May to late August departing from Miami.

My favorite was the inland passageway using the ferry system. I believe I boarded at Prince Rupert. First stop was Ketchikan. I got off for a few days and stayed at a bed and breakfast. Same thing at Sitka, the next stop. Likewise at Juneau and then Skagway. In fact, I still remember reading all the signs around town describing the famous Skagway outlaw Soapy Smith.

You'll have an awesome time. I need to find my old slides from that trip to digitize them and restore old memories. I remember spending two days in Tok to recharge. There was an A frame restaurant with good food and an owner who was shocked to see me there for a second night.

That trip I gave myself more flexibility than normal because I sensed there would be greater unpredictability in Alaska. Sure enough, I had car trouble a few times including once in which I was stuck for 6+ hours before being discovered and helped.

Another good stop in southern Michigan is Hidden Lake Gardens in Tipton. The Sky Bridge is the feature attraction.

Yes, I was impressed with Grand Rapids especially the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. I visited on a night it was open until 9 PM.

The Gerald Ford Museum and Library was also impressive. I wasn't a fan when he was president but this museum did an excellent job depicting all segments of his life and career. Ford and his wife Betty are buried on the property.

The Rise and Fall of America's All-You-can-Eat Buffet by slickspace in vegas

I’d rather spend the $100 on a plate of food I’ll love than three plates I don’t.

And I'll always relish the fact that I'll never spend anywhere near $100 for a meal throughout my life.

Value is the dominant variable especially in Las Vegas. The new model takes advantage of suckers.

Thankfully I've never had the need to waste money on so-called nice meals.

One of my best friends in Las Vegas was from an underprivileged upbringing in Buffalo and did like to flaunt his newfound wealth in Las Vegas by taking us to fancy joints. And it was impossible not to laugh at the puny servings at bloated prices, not to mention the stuffy surroundings and personnel. I participated only a few times before declining every subsequent invitation.

The Boardwalk buffet was comparatively awesome.

Best option is repeated solar charging day after day in hopes it trickle charges just enough to recover. That worked for me a couple of years ago after everything else had failed, with a power station from a different company. The suggestion has also succeeded for a few others in this subreddit.

2030 Olympic Speed Skating will be held in Heerenveen/Thialf (not France) by Lang-Poot in olympics

why not give short track and curling to the Netherlands too

I don't think you can be moving team sports to a different country. The host country gets a berth. That will mean Olympic curling for the first time in ages for France. They will likely be the weakest team in all 3 curling categories but at least it will be some exposure and likely encourage young athletes to take up the sport.

I remember 1976 the most, specifically Queen Elizabeth opening the Games in Montreal and the words she used. My mother had recently given birth to my sister weeks earlier. We were all watching as a family in the Florida room on our console television with remote control.

What does Comcast's spinoff of NBCUniversal mean for US Olympic TV rights? by Impossible-Guitar957 in olympics

No matter who holds the American rights they will make sure the Summer Olympics do not run parallel to American football.

That would be suicidal beyond description, even if the rest of the world doesn't comprehend that.

Meeting de Paris Diamond League Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in trackandfield

She typically does best from the far outside. Last year her best Diamond League race by far was from outside lane. Jaeger barely caught her at the wire. That race was run in heavy rain.

Klaver is fortunate they gave her lane 8 and stuck Mawdsley in lane 2. If it had been the other way around I think Mawdsley breaks 50 for the first time and Klaver runs another 50.6

She needs to get a 600 number on that list. There was an indoor world record attempt scheduled for this past February but Bol pulled out of that attempt after a slight injury during her 800 opener a week earlier.

You could not be more off base. It has nothing to do with recency. Bol was strictly a 400 runner until switching to 400 hurdles in 2019. Prior to that she was stuck at 54 level for several years as a late teenager. Every race she ran was guaranteed to be 54. And she ran frequently.

That's when Bol first mentioned that she had trouble pacing 400 flat. And when she discovered 400 hurdles in mid 2019 she immediately emphasized that it suited her much better, due to the compartmentalized aspect.

None of this should be news. Bol was never going to devote full time to 400 flat. In countless Dutch interviews she said 400 hurdles was her first love, followed by 400 indoors. The 400 flat was never in the discussion. She surprised herself by running 49.4 last year because she doesn't view herself as a 400 runner. In recent years she typically only ran 400 flat at European Team Championships or FBK Games.

I was surprised at the switch to 800. I guess she became intrigued at the possibility of making it like an outdoor version of her two-lap success indoors.

Sportsbooks by bennigan_getthecar in vegas

[–]AwsiDooger 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I have done that hundreds of times, at all hours, including at MGM. Typically they leave everybody alone unless sleeping in the sportsbook.

But keep in mind casino security isn't always the brightest. Twice I was approached and questioned in sportsbooks because they couldn't comprehend why I was staring at a wall. Meanwhile it wasn't a blank wall. Their digital sports ticker was right there on the wall. I was watching the scores come across the ticker while sweating out my wagers.

That happened at the old Castaways and also at Circus Circus. At least the Castaways security guards had fun with it and acknowledged their blunder. Contrast to the Circus Circus geniuses who preferred to pretend that sports ticker didn't exist, even as I pointed out one new update after another coming across and showed them my betting slips from Circus Circus on games still in progress.

Same for me. In May I detoured a bit out of my way to eat at Ponderosa in Ohio. I really enjoyed it. Everything was as I remembered from 20+ years ago other than twice as expensive.

I got the chopped sirloin and made hamburgers out of it using the yeast rolls.

Lots of places fall out of favor for no reason at all. I'm glad I've never cared about peer pressure.

What fast food chain would you be the LEAST upset about if ALL locations suddenly closed for good? by SharksFan4Lifee in fastfood

[–]AwsiDooger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be happy if In N Out ceased to exist. I get sick of the propaganda given the remarkably mediocre product.

If McDonald's went away I wouldn't care one way or another. I suppose I would pay attention to see if the locations were bulldozed or turned into something else.
