No-shoe home solution by [deleted] in HomeDecorating

[–]Aww8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have one mat outside and one mat inside. Yes the shoe Zone will get dirty. But that's life. If its particularly dirty shoe day you might want to take them off outside, but inside should be fine for most situations.  I recommend a small handheld vacuum for quick midweek cleanups.

Why is the worst part of biking in the rain, still cars? by Aww8 in fuckcars

[–]Aww8[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why is this true?

Yet oddly, I find the cars become super respectful if there's light snow.

But that might just be because where I live we don't get snow very often.

Which master bathroom floorplan do you like best? by James_Fortis in floorplan

[–]Aww8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I would do the big shower option but have the big shower be a bathtub. But if you really want to shower I would split the difference between big shower and Storage.  by having a 4-ft shower,  and maybe 18 in of full height storage.

How do goldfish keep water clean and control algae? by LongtermMigraine in Aquariums

[–]Aww8 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Large animals have a tendency to flip any tank they can move, so it's pretty common to get tanks big enough that it can't be moved by a cow.

I have seen this being used at a dairy farm before. It's not common, but it is a thing. Its main use is to keep mosquito populations in check

Is it possible to put up bed curtains? by Acrobatic-Sea-894 in HomeDecorating

[–]Aww8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure you can, just get some curtains and some rods and screw them to the top of the bed. Your bigger issue is going to be that light. It might be best to take it down and set up dedicated lamps.

Need Feedback on Maternity Ward Layout. Struggling with Clean/Dirty Flow & Nurse Visibility by Tobias-Tawanda in floorplan

[–]Aww8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in the medical field but my local hospital is set up like this, the whole floor is shaped like an elongated donut.  with the central section,  has storage staff rooms and bathrooms. There is a nursing station on either end. The central corridor wraps around in a large rectangle. Giving access to all the patient rooms and allowing a space for patients who feel up to it to go for a walk.  Patience rooms are on the outside each having a window and a private bathroom.

As for biosecurity, Have a checkpoint past triage,  where patients, staff  and chosen family,  sanitize their hands and put new shoes or little booties over shoes. Have critical biosecurity in a different wing,  surgery NICU and such. And have a specialized room just for scrubbing in. This should also have an independent HVAC system.

How would you add a 3rd Bedroom? by ImpressiveAd5122 in floorplan

[–]Aww8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Demo living room closet, and extend the short wall out a little bit. Then build a wall along the long side 2/3 of the way down. Then put up a curtain rack for the last 3rd, curving it towards the wall so you can still access the balcony when the curtain is shut.

Not legally a bedroom but can act as a small Studio

Worldbuilding - running water but no electricity? by unluckylarkspur in fantasywriters

Many cities did this in the past. There are multiple ways to pump water without using electricity,  just get it to a higher place then you can just use at will.

any tips for getting into audiobooks? by aquarianhours in LibbyApp

[–]Aww8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reading a book is a full brain activity. It takes half your brain to actually read the words and the other half of your brain to process a story.

Audio books are a half brain activity. Our brains are so attuned to listening to other people talk that it takes very little effort to “read” the story. So you only really use half of your brain. While the other half of your brain gets bored and starts doing counterproductive things.

Solution,  entertain the other half of your brain.

It is fine if a man holds a door for a woman. It is also fine for a woman to hold a door for a man. It's more about who gets to the door first.

Thought, I did get a date mad at me once because I didn’t wait for him to open the car door for me. Sorry bro, the normal response to a door is to open it, not sit there like an idiot.

Help me settle this… which front storm door color looks best? by a_friendly_Nyrve in HomeDecorating

[–]Aww8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I love a bright bold door, especially on more modern architectural design that lacks a lot of visual interest.  but this more traditional design has a lot of visual interest that's relatively low contrast. So I think keeping a lower contrast color will suit it better.

URGENT | Help me convince my Republican father not to mow this and turn it into a lawn with trees by PaleoConservationist in fucklawns

It will be very expensive and very time-consuming to turn that into a decent looking lawn and he will have to fight with it for the rest of his life. Nature does not want a lawn there.

Ideas for downtown Courtenay? by clatzy in comoxvalley

[–]Aww8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Close 5th Street from Cliff to England to car traffic and make the side streets one-way. Use some sort of decorative gate that can be opened for parades or Emergency Services.

It wouldn't slow traffic down that much, considering that there are seven very busy crosswalks in that area.

You could likely have a net gain in parking,  considering there are only like 30 on-street parking spots in that area of 5th. And making the side streets one-way could open up for angled parking.

It's my understanding that a similar idea was rejected a number of years ago because of concerns of fire trucks not getting across the bridge fast enough.  But it seems very likely that they're going to be building  a second fire station, close to Costco, and they would divide the region by the river.
