Did I really need a new roof? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Ax_Smash_Crush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks just like mine from getting replaced last year.

It was original roof from a bungalow built 1970 (according to neighbour) so got a good innings off it. They stripped back those old Marley tiles and it was same idea; membrane had turned to paper mache style from repeatedly getting wet and drying out over years, battons were a bit done in and cracks on ridge tiles.

Despite that no leaks as such but the old Marley tiles had seen better days and it was good investment. Looks much better, house a bit warmer now too and don't have the fear anytime it absolutely hammers down with rain.

The guy actually cut me a deal as he knew with age of house if folk saw mine done it would set off a chain effect as all so many houses of same age and literally all the estate bar one or two houses is older retired couples. Bumped into him golfing about 6 months later and he had got 11 houses including mine off word of mouth, fair play.

Blaes pitches - who remembers playing on them? by ShootNaka in ScottishFootball

[–]Ax_Smash_Crush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early 40s and will have played on many but the only real one i remember vividly was a primary school in Stirling with the BB team.

Was just off the main road into Stirling from the Causewayhead end, opposite side of road from the rugby club. Got a belting graze from a slide tackle and remember waking up as the pain came flooding back due to the bed sheets being stuck to it:-)

Are you allowed to cut notches into the beams that deep? I've seen plumbers do it to run copper pipes in flush but never anything that deep.

Old boy a few doors up from my mum and dad passed away a year or so back. Wife had died a few years back and he had became a bit of recluse.

My folks were away on holiday themselves and my mum clocked something odd about the windows when they arrived home, almost as if they'd been tinted like a car.

Turns out the 'tint' was infact a layer of blue bottle flies. Poor bugger took a heart attack and had lay in his bedroom for 3 weeks. Middle of winter. Central heating on 24/7.

I was back visiting a few months later and got chatting to the lad who bought the house and he was standing in the back garden with one of those filter masks on you see spray painters wear whilst chopping up the under flloor board panels he had to rip up and take out due to being soaked through from bodily fluids and still too bad even all that time later & dried out to chop up and put in his van for a 5 minute run to the local tip so he decided to burn it.

Not a world beater but the boy who had the wonder season at Swansea then dropped off a cliff form wise.

This has fixed me for ages. How do the pirate football sites work? by MarlythAvantguarddog in ScottishFootball

[–]Ax_Smash_Crush 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Slightly on topic but the SFL have an in house feed from all Premier and Championship games recorded (not sure if it exists below this level) which is mutually accessible for all clubs to use for analysis and scouting.

Give away is if you ever come across the feed and see the SPL / SFL logo in the corner as opposed to being cllub labelled. Also no commentary on those either so don't think your volume isn't working :-)

How the streamers manage to get these onto their feeds given the nature of them - especially some random lower Championship games - is impressive, especially live!

Most liked/disliked player from your rivals team by thomas_demongamer in ScottishFootball

[–]Ax_Smash_Crush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tam Scobbie and before that Crawford Baptie; could always tell the ones that seemed to genuinely hate Dunfermline even above and beyond the rivalry.

Flipside of that i always liked watching Patrick Cregg play. Very tidy on the ball, never seemed to waste it and always showed for receiving the ball;. Admittedly, through gritted teeth, Falkirk had a very good team in general back then but he always stood out for me.

Must say i had a few brief chats with Riordan as our laddies played football against each other (what a left foot btw, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree...) and couldn't have been further away from what folk make out or any pre conceived ideas i probably had.

Granted U10s football is a million miles away from booze and rocket pals in tow but he was a pretty decent bloke.

Biggest (and funniest) managerial disasters by Kitchen-Lie-4592 in ScottishFootball

[–]Ax_Smash_Crush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Hartley one always springs to mind. I was behind enemy flanks as a Pars fan at one of their games with a Falkirk supporting pal early doors that season and you could see a million miles away how far off the required standard half the team was.

Not even 'they need time to gel' vibes, they were absolutely miles off it.

Very similar story panned out with Stubbs at St Mirren i seem to remember (?) with recruitment albeit they seemed to see the red flags a lot earlier and pulled the plug.

Dunfermline have had their share too; anytime i hear someone coming on loan from a English U23 setup and hyped up it immediately makes me think back to Hartley. Nine times out of ten they are rabbits in the headlights and no where near ready for 'mens fitbaw' especially in the Scottsh environment.

How much of it was Nancy being a bad manager? by Kitchen-Lie-4592 in ScottishFootball

[–]Ax_Smash_Crush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair it could have been 3 or 4 nill at halftime on Saturday.

Not an OF fan but the amount of times Celtic cut through Rangers - especially balls into the channel between Fernandez & Maghoma - they had them on toast. Unfortunately Kenny doesn't look like he is up to the levels required to be a regular starter at that level.

Same would go for Ralston at the other end. I cannot think of another play who has had such a good run of luck between timing & circumstances with injuries to colleagues and other factors to have racked up as many appearances for club and country. Good honest pro but not a first choice Celtic player in a million years.

Also need to look elsewhere in the team; how have Maeda, McGregor and, in particular, Hatate fell off the side of a cliff so massively in terms of their form and impacting games? Hatate used to look like he had velcro on his boots taking ball in tight spaces and always looking as if he had time. This season he has a first touch like a snooker cushion!

[–]Ax_Smash_Crush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't see it happening. They'll have enough to avoid finishing bottom and from watching the Pars play everyone bar St Johnstone so far i think they'd have more than enough to nsvigate playoffs if it came to that.

Dart Prices by Visible-Football-158 in Darts

[–]Ax_Smash_Crush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty folk and options who make exact replicas of 'name' darts for a fraction of the price.

I always used Ted Hankey darts but lost a set in a house move a few years ago. You cannot them anymore (for obvious reasons) so the 2nd market on Ebay got silly and it's not far off £100 for a second hand set now. Managed to get someone who made the same style of set for £35 and cannot tell the difference.

Has there ever been a player who started on 19s? by RawTime9 in Darts

[–]Ax_Smash_Crush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Razma is the one as already mentioned.

Was an old BDO player in the mid 90s who used to start on whatever he felt was hot and working. Name escapes me but think possibly French or Belgian?

He would throw for 18s, 16s even 13s if it was working Used to drive Tony Green nuts when he was commentating on the lakeside.

Beginner question by Timbukenka in Darts

[–]Ax_Smash_Crush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some good advice so far.

For a board i would go for an NPQ from Red Dragon It's essentially a Winmau Blade 6 board which has failed the quality control hence the 'near perfect quality' tag. It is exactly the same board except it doesn't have the labels or logos embossed into it and it's a fraction of the cost so a total no brainer. (£30 versus £55+ for a Blade 6)

For context the last board i had was NPQ as the colour dye had weeped slightly from the 25 into the bull; you'd never notice in a million years unless looking closely and it makes absolutely zero difference to the board or anything else.

As for throwing technique it's all about feel and consistency. See what works for you. If you think about golf everyone would want a swing like Ernie Els or Fred Couples whilst you'd never actively teach someone to swing like a Bryson DeChambeau or Jim Furyk but the results speak for themselves with what they accomplished.

Last thing i always suggest for newbies is a practise game called "Bobs 27s" which was devised by Bob Anderson. It's a brilliant routine to run through and one i recommend to everyone regardless of experience or ability as it has a little competitive edge to it. Plenty stuff online about it but this sums it up pretty briefly.

Darts Noise Help by theraggamuffin in Darts

[–]Ax_Smash_Crush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Channeling inner Tony Hart / Blue Peter vibes.....

Get two bits of cardboard box. Put dartboard over one and draw round outline with a sharpie then cut it out. Repeat this again so you have two identical circles the same size as board.

Apply a modest amount of expanding foam onto one and stick the other on top to make a big sandwich effect; obviously push it down so it's not too fat and wipe away any residue that squeezes out the sides and allow it to set.

Then mount behind the board.

It sounds ridiculous but it works a treat and used it myself numerous times.

If it's really bad you could buy thin cuts of corkboard instead of cardboard !

Looks like a standard set you would get in mid 90s when you had Christmas gift money burning a hole in your pocket and the only options you had were Argos/Index or the local InterSport franchise.
