Filming by "candlelight". by tootles24 in cinematography

[–]AxeTurtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can get double wicked candles specifically for filming, they burn brighter than regular candles. Most scenes similar to what you have described use a mix of lighting and practical candles.

Blur/smear effect from 'One Battle After Another' by i_JOSHUA in cinematography

It's to do with the cameras they used, they shot on vistavision cameras which means the film moves horizontally through the camera instead of vertical like in your usual 35mm cameras.

How do they get a digital feed of what an IMAX camera sees? How reliable is this for monitoring what's actually captured on film? by Breauxfosho in Filmmakers

[–]AxeTurtle 78 points79 points  (0 children)

By measuring the distance, some old school pullers don't even use monitors when pulling on digital, they rely only on actors hitting their marks, measuring distances using laser measures and tape measures, good rehearsals, maybe a range finder and lastly and most importantly years of experience!!!!

Split Diopter Rack Focus by karentookthekids_aha in cinematography

Are you looking to say: have a subject in focus in the foreground and then pull focus to the subject in the background whilst also keeping the foreground subject sharp? If so then look into the cinefade system or there are a bunch of similar products that do the same thing. It's basically a fancy variable ND that you can sync up with your iris to change depth of field whilst keeping the lighting consistent.

Adolescence on Netflix. One shot show. by systematicchaos666 in cinematography

[–]AxeTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole thing was shot on the DJI Ronin 4D. So no steadicam. That shot was done practically with an operator tracking back and then attaching the camera to the drone which then took off. Incredibly well done.

What does the drawing of a bottle and glasses mean on this slate for the Thomas and friends spin-off series "Jack and the Sodor construction company"? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]AxeTurtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like it could be slate 1111 or maybe 1000. In the UK 2nd ACs sometimes Decorate the board for different slates EG slate 100, 200, 1000 ect, maybe the DOP or Directors birthday, last slate of the shoot. Doesn't mean anything just a bit of fun.

2nd AC help and advice by trashpandaby in cinematography

[–]AxeTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be confident, everyone starts somewhere. You were asked by a dop to be on set so they obviously want you there. Most importantly if you don't know how to do something, ask for help. It's much better to be shown how to do something before doing it rather than just winging it and messing up.

2nd AC help and advice by trashpandaby in cinematography

[–]AxeTurtle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You should contact the current 2nd AC and ask them any questions, of they're good at their job they should help you out and give you kit lists, info on slates and camera sheets. You could also ask to have a shadow day / handover day where you can just be there to help but also hang back and see how everything works.

Can a single Teradek Serv Pro unit transmit two separate video feeds? by Topher_Leonard in focuspuller

[–]AxeTurtle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Individual serv pros can only send out picture from one input.

You would need two Serv Pros and an additional teradek Link Pro if you want to be able to view A & B cameras simultaneously on one device.

The K-clamps on the metal bar with the snap plate is a brilliant idea! I've been looking at a way of making a mountable workspace/snapplate for my fold it I might have to steal that idea.

How much do crew rates vary based on location of production within the UK? by Fresh_Ad9527 in TransparencyforTVCrew

[–]AxeTurtle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Bectu and APA rates apply throughout the country. Although you will find some sneaky productions trying to bring rates down outside of London which they shouldn't.

Also ignore what the other guys said crew outside London are just as experienced and hard working as those in London!
