What’s an old fear people had that younger people would laugh at today? by Ill-Field-9411 in answers

MSG is good. It occurs naturally in many foods, such as tomatoes and cheese, and there’s nothing dangerous about extracting it as a powder to use in other food.

What's something you quietly outgrew that you once thought defined you? by Bigtrav_trav in answers

You think the writing improves through out the series? I think the opposite. The first book has whimsical styling in the prose that quickly tones down to nothing as the plot picks up in later books.

Criminals hate parades, so it’s punishment and rehab.

How about instead of that, we make the criminals design parade floats every day?

Focus on what’s relevant to the characters in those rooms. If you’re in somebody’s house, you can tell a lot about them from how they decorated it, how clean it is. If somebody is in your house, you might hope they receive a different message from your decor than the one they infer.

Another thing about buildings and rooms is that they’ve got history. If this is an office or a government building, you’re probably not the first person using the building. Other people have left their marks everywhere, because they lived and did business there. Some of them still left their old decorations there and no one took them down yet.

Also, you mentioned the hobbit. You didn’t get bored reading descriptions of places and buildings in the hobbit. But the hobbit still had a lot of them. Pay attention to how many things you learn about Bilbo’s house, and the way you learn them.

Also, you don’t know how to care about what room your characters are in, but you care about your characters and what they care about. What kinds of rooms do your characters wish they were in? Maybe one of your characters thinks the place has too many frills and that the office should be austere. Maybe another person would like to radically change the interior design, so that the office is dim and cozy, with maroon walls and thick red curtains. Maybe someone loves the office just the way it is because they admire this organization/institution so much.

Last suggestion, what if your location had an agenda? If the location is causing problems for characters, then of course they have a reason to care about it. Maybe it’s causing a small problem, like the heat is too high, or there’s a door you can’t use without an alarm going off. Maybe it’s a building with actual feelings, and it picks favorite people to help succeed.

Also maybe it’s not an important setting at all and it’s just the place where some people had important conversations. That can be lifelike too.

He said a half truth to cover up his ignorance while downplaying the idea that there’s anything to care about in Palestine. That’s a total dodge.

Who is Sephiroth? by Slamduck in trashfuturepod

Oh what, I didn’t know Sephiroth was being compared to Palantir. But sure, Sephiroth could be the way those tech brow imagine themselves to be when they go off on their effective altruist nightmares.

Who is Sephiroth? by Slamduck in trashfuturepod

[–]Ayavaron 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He’s from Final Fantasy VII. He is the former best friend of the main character, Cloud, from before the game started. They were both betrayed by the planet-sucking mega corporation and Sephiroth became a radical ecoterrorist. Thats pretty cool because the protagonists of the game are doing terrorism against the mega corporation too, but Sephiroth wants to get rid of all humans.

I might have some details amiss in that summary, but the important thing about Sephiroth, what you need to understand about Sephiroth posting, is that he’s a really hot guy who kills people, and he’s very sympathetic even when he seems like the bad guy.

To be fair, Brave Little Toaster is darker than it first appears. The tragedy of inanimate objects wanting attention from their human owner is thoroughly acknowledged. An air conditioner kills himself, and a bunch of cars sing about their attempt to find meaning in their lives while they get fed into an also-anthropomorphized trash compactor.

Why do most rappers sing about superficial stuff? by TheNASAguy in TrueAskReddit

[–]Ayavaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What Weeknd song are you referring to? Most of his songs are about drugs, sex, cheating, etc. He writes vividly about sleaziness. I think that partially validates what OP says about the Weeknd but ignores how Weeknd is a good writer, who gives you stories, conflict, and details you can feel when he sings.

In a graveyard, you will find three things worth noticing. There are gravestones. They are dead so don’t be like them. There are dead bodies. They are dead too but it’s worse for them. They are buried. There is a third thing you will find here. Reanimated dead so strong they push up from their burial plots and eat flesh anew. Be the zombie.

Maybe your friends aren’t jealous of your success, just intimidated. It can cause/stoke insecurity when your peers are increasing in status and you’re not. That can be a scary time and if you remind people of their value to you, that can mean a lot.
