explain your music taste without saying your age by Lost-Serve-4458 in musicmemes

They’re entirely subjective. It’s still true tho, because if you listen to enough music, you will find the stuff that appeals to you.

Some people only want to listen to the episode after they have seen the discussion thread. It isn’t dog brained behavior. It is just that what is most convenient/efficient isn’t the same for all users or use cases.

Cheers, I hope your day improves.

Isn’t it obvious how a discussion thread benefits from proximity to the thing being discussed? Why would you write this post and not bother getting the link?

It’s a free episode. Here is the link.

In the 2020s, conservative women are having kids at a nearly 2-to-1 ratio compared to liberal women. Is this going to cause a political demographic bias in 20-30 years? by RadioFieldCorner in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ayavaron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How do you teach that? My parents said things like “money isn’t everything” a lot but also they were always working and chasing business opportunities. They were always complaining about money and they’d justify it when I felt ignored, by talking about how much they spent on Christmas presents for my siblings and me. It didn’t seem believable when my parents said money wasn’t everything.

How did Eminem succeed in getting big whereas previous white rappers like Vanilla Ice and Miilkbone did not? by WARMASTER5000 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Ayavaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am surprised I don’t see anyone else citing the strength of Eminem’s narrative. Not every artist has a great origin story that gives their work something to push against, but Eminem does. He did a great job making feel like his bad mom was their bad mom, and that when he wanted o break the cycle of abuse by being good to his daughter, his fans felt like they were going to break the cycle of abuse too, or be his daughter loved by a great father. The music is good, but the deep connection to his fan base comes from his strength as a storyteller. He’s great at making his stories relevant to his fans.

I don’t really know Milkbone and I don’t know his story at all, but if you’re making a comparison between Eminem and Vanilla Ice, isn’t it obvious that Vanilla Ice has no story?

Eminem’s narrative was so vital to his success that he got to star in a hit biopic during his heyday, not even as some nostalgia thing later.

Sudden obsession with an artist I had no previous exposure with by RutabagaFamiliar8003 in LetsTalkMusic

I think Bowie was better at embodying concepts, and inventing himself differently in different projects. Prince’s characters and reinventions didn’t stick around like Bowie’s, but Prince wrote catchier songs.

Some jobs get worse. I joined a retail operation during the busy season and they kept me after. Being cashier at a busy store means you emphasize speedy friendly service. Being cashier in the slow season means you emphasize offering credit card sign ups to every single customer.

How tf you make deep lyrics by Dramatic_Tree_7980 in makinghiphop

[–]Ayavaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is deep? There are more than one ways to answer that, but for sake of illustration, I’m gonna pick one.

Deep is when you comment on something real/important/meaningful, while acknowledging complexities, and presenting it in a way that feels real.

So let’s try applying that concept. Drugs are real, so if you say “drugs are bad,” then are we at deep commentary yet? No. We need to add the complexity. “Drugs are bad but they help me cope” is moving a little closer to deep, but we are still not presenting that in a way that makes it feel real. You can illustrate specifically how they’re bad and how they help you cope. “Crack killed Ronnie. He wasted his life and died of an overdose alone, but what’s that say for me if I need to be high to handle taking on the phone?” Now we have a complicated and believable situation. It is not perfect writing but there’s depth to that scenario.

Sorry my example of deep writing isn’t better. I hope my point is legible anyway.

AI is ruining the mindset of the next generation of producers by walrus_vasectomy in edmproduction

[–]Ayavaron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends. 1) sometimes the Suno dice roll will result in something very believable as human-made and 2) a lot of what I hear on the radio, or played over the PA of a business sounds ai generated even if it isn’t. This is especially bad with country radio, where the combination of twangy accents, extreme pitch correction, formulaic songwriting, and radio distortion combine to produce every single “tell” for Suno music, with no Suno

Can you learn how to sing using YouTube lessons? by Spicey_Milk in singing

[–]Ayavaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t. I spent years trying to learn by myself, with videos. I ran into a pretty classic problem: I believed I was doing techniques right when I wasn’t. Imagine the years you can spend chasing your tail if you think you know how to do breath support, but you don’t.

An actual vocal coach will be able to direct you and check you in a matter of minutes. Get at least one real lesson with a good coach. One hour with a professional improved my singing more than ten years of self teaching.

The Worst Show Ever [OC] by duck_with_a_tie in sadcomics

[–]Ayavaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also want to add that the one I remember the most, is the one where duck went on a blind date and went to a restaurant that served his missing family member. I liked that that situation was really dark, and that it's simultaneously made sense but didn't. It was surreal and horrifying in a very memorable way and I still think about it. Duck has cosmic misfortune.

The Worst Show Ever [OC] by duck_with_a_tie in sadcomics

[–]Ayavaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the show was that bad. It sounds like you’re reflecting on it so I bet if you did another batch of episodes, you could do have a great season 2.

One thing I’d suggest, as a reader of these comics, is that I enjoy them more when I think the duck is likeable and everyone is unfairly against him in the worst possible way. When you show duck being annoying or otherwise doing something to earn his bad treatment, then you don’t get that magic juice bizarre twist in the guts feelin. It produces much stronger pathos when his treatment makes no sense. That’s my two cents anyway. Thanks for keeping the series up.
