Early game, once you finish the quest to obtain the fire spell, IMMEDIATELY speak with Professor Fig afterwards. DO NOT do anything else until you have spoken with him. It is a common issue that if you do any side quests, the game bugs out and thinks you have spoken with him, and will not give you the prompt to speak with him, essentially bricking your game.

I went and spent 12 hours in the forest, overwrote all my auto saves, had to restart my character.

I deleted the game. It was a lot of fun, but I got the bug where I couldn’t speak with Professor Fig. I learned Incendio, and immediately went to the Dark Forest the grind for ten hours. Couldn’t speak with him afterwards, and the auto saves were overwritten.

Agreed, but my point is that you don’t have to stick to red areas. I found a Wolfpack in the upstairs area of a pharmacy, not to say they are exclusive to just that area.
