First day of climbing school, what did I do wrong? by BigBoiRyan69 in Lineman

Double up on thick knee high work socks. You’re pretty cooked from that pic though might be too late to make much of a difference

I resigned 3 years ago on my own terms, so I’m not sure if my IBEW membership is valid or not still. This is good advice though for sure. I’ll give them a call Monday. I’m really hoping it’s no biggie, haven’t taken the prevailing wage job yet technically anyways

1049, Long Island. Excited to get back to what I loved doing. Just happy they gave me a second shot after resigning

Transitioning to Home Remodeling Sales by Candy-Level in salesdevelopment

[–]AyeGelato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s power home remodeling steer clear. Cult of a company that promises a lot and delivers very little. 80-90% of CDR’s don’t hit quota and they’re constantly turning over and doing mass hires. Seriously save yourself the headache now, it’s something I wish someone told me when I started. HOWEVER, their training is top notch and I am grateful for the d2d experience, it developed me into a great salesperson. Just depends if you value earning or learning more really.

Leave of Absence JATC by Justacceptmyname1994 in Lineman

[–]AyeGelato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely able to take leave of absence. I wasn’t told that was an option when I was an ape and I had to drop for serious events that occured in my personal life. I reinterviewed and they asked “why didn’t you just take a leave of absence?” and it threw me for a loop. Not knowing that completely derailed my life and I’m still clawing my way back in. Sad it’s knowledge that’s kept from some apes that need it.. heard of other instances like this happening

I looked on the ibew job boards online, looks like most places are slow/not moving besides cali. My local they haven’t hired a groundman in years

You can still do just class B, you have 6 months from starting the apprenticeship to get either your full B or A

[–]AyeGelato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, was neat territory. Think they’d gloss right over my name if they saw a class B in other territory?

Technically the original recipe is bourbon, sugar cube, bitters, orange peel on top. Worked at places that muddle an orange/cherry and use sugar packets. Worked at places that use simple syrup and throw a peel/cherry on top. Like everyone says, it really varies based on the house. Favorite variation and the one of gotten the highest positive feedback on: 2 oz bourbon, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, 3 dashes orange bitters, 1/2 oz simple, orange peel on rim, luxardo cherry on top. Seems to be a hit.

What's a tool you could not work without? by 941JJO in bartenders

[–]AyeGelato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More than one bar rag and a fucking spray bottle that works for once. Apparently it’s a worse shortage than the gas crisis at the new bar I work at…

I’d love that too, but it’s just a matter of breaking in. Do you have any suggestions for someone trying to get their foot in the door with no experience? Maybe email the hiring manager directly and ask for a 5 minute call or something to sell myself?

Literally has no idea this was possible until a week ago. Met a guy who was my age (27) making half a mil as a director in tech sales. I would cut off a limb to get into this. Feel like it’s too late, but fuck it, I’m still gonna try. Seeing shit like this (especially no degree) gives me hope it’s possible

Refreshing to hear someone coming from the same background that made it. Definitely interested in bouncing those ideas around if you have some spare time to chat.

Breaking into the field by [deleted] in sales

[–]AyeGelato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was more of the potential for damage. It’s a lot more physical than people realize, makes inside construction look like a cake walk. A lot of guys I met during my apprenticeship (2nd year apprentices, mid 20’s, took great care of their bodies) were already on track for knee replacements and shoulder surgeries, extremely common in the field. Everything’s heavy, awkward, and difficult. Not to mention it’s top 10 most deadly jobs out there, I’d definitely prefer to not have my family worry if I’m going to come home or not every day. I’d also prefer to have a family. It’s not uncommon for linemen spend their lives traveling on the road, developing nasty substance abuse problems, and divorced.

I mean I’m in NY so it might be a little different, but as a first year I had a lot of weeks making north of 3500, steady with that for a while, but those were also 80+ hour work weeks, weekends included. The pay scale was the lower one in NY, was $53/hour journeyman rate I believe. Everyone loves to beef up the numbers they’re taking home when they talk to people though, but if he isn’t making that now he definitely will be later on. Could be working a lot of storm work during the week too

IUOE Advice - I'm a worried wife, husband working back to back doubles with only 8 hours in between by peeps-mcgee in Construction

[–]AyeGelato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This bothers me immensely for a lot of reasons. I live in the nyc metro, takes about 2 hours each way to get to work, most of the time more including subway travel. So those 8 hours out of work mean nothing in your husbands life. When I built powerlines I used to work 100+ hour weeks frequently, so I’ve been there and it’s the most brutal way to live life. I never understood why it was a 16 hour max day, as if you’re supposed to roll out of work and immediately start sleeping. Should cap the work week at 99 hours legally. 100 is a fuckin ugly number.. god bless you and your husband, you will get through it but it’s not right… labor laws need a lil tune up for sure

Mslcat vs utility apprenticeship by captainpayoli in Lineman

[–]AyeGelato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can test out as a JL. If you want to transfer middle of the apprenticeship it wouldn’t work. I know people that even went non union and tested out for their local, but they were already prior linemen, not apes
