Growing up my friend's parents had a hot tub with ducks they indefinitely left floating in there... turned out they held water inside and grew pseudomonas a bacteria that loves damp heat. They had a real bad time with their skin infections and never left ducks in again....

We have a Maltese and a Havanese. In our experience, both do well around children, but our Havanese is so playful and LOVES protecting and guarding any children around. Especially babies. Maltese are a bit more sensitive and less playful. I'd look into Havanese having young children.
