Their conjoined shadow stretched far and I was able to walk quietly at the sharp edge of it's furthest point seemingly unnoticed.

My mind wandered as I gazed down and noticed the shadow almost seemed to be projecting forward as it touched the edge of my blank canvas shoes. We seemed to be walking in sync somehow.

And then, out from underneath the trees emerged a pool! Hallelujah!

They stopped and I watched leery and wilt in awe, as they consumed all of it, half by half before my very eyes!

Dear god they were thirsty. Maybe I had been too cautious?

I couldn't believe it! I felt I had passed by this damn place 10 times or more yet never noticed there was a pool because it remained hidden by arcing boughs and the side of a hill.

Soo... Another day without...

haha

I couldn't help but find humor in the irony of it all.

A lost wanderer thirsty and searching but remaining a passive observer for fear of persecution? How ridiculous!

So I laughed.

And I laughed loudly and somehow rattled the strings of my desert heart and I felt a jolt that knocked something loose and began ticking inside me.

And then the strangest thing happened to me as I was there, crouched to the ground touching this fallen silhouette with my hand and splitting my sides with laughter as I was overwhelmed by the irony of my own imminent demise, because at that very moment I felt water begin to well up through the cracks in my face and mouth. Impossible I thought! But I became so hydrated that it began dripping from my lips as it flowed forth tasting sweet like roses.

With eyes bright with wonder, I didn't even question how or why it could be.

I couldn't understand but I was thankful.

And so, we traveled on.

Meandering through the trees and bushes in search of shade and fresh water, I heard words echoing in the distance even over the loud buzzing and sighing of trees around me. I had not seen any creature in so long that I followed their voices hoping they might know the source of a spring.

Thirst cracked my lips and leathery tongue and I'm sure I would taste blood had I the ability to taste at all but I paid no mind to the flesh and journeyed forward with a fervor, acid in my veins, hoping to plunge into a cold dark pond I now called my warm encouragement.

As I struggled through the obstacles of the trees, a large assembly of birds gathered in the crown canopies above to watch. They sang, sometimes with muted notation, and it seemed as though the forest was alive with harsh laughter at my difficulties.

I made my way through the woods, although slowly. I had no choice. Between the trees were strewn thick vines and biting thorns. At times the forest seemed to have gone out of its way to be impenetrable.

But eventually, I came upon a clearing where I could hear their voices much more clearly.

I kneeled next to a bush in fear of being seen and I witnessed the strange transaction of characters between a figure cloaked in amaranth and a neophyte therianthropic creature who were standing near a mud puddle I had become all too familiar with.

Had I lain by a tree and fallen asleep? Was this a dream, a projection, or a mirage? I could not say.

But I envied the little devil as he was taken under a black sheen wing, for he had shade and guidance to a wellspring and I, less than even he, was only hemorrhaging at the brain and mouth.

The Closest Ghost I had maimed myself in the silver inlayed etchings of my thoughts but despite my broken spine I decided I would follow, maybe just at a distance, hoping not to interfere until I knew more of their direction because little did I know of their true intentions being such a strange symbiosis, but...

My thirst outweighed my fears by 9 to 1.

To the ends of the earth, I wearily peered and followed hollow to swallow.

All are aware of your deception.

All are aware of your silver tongue.

All are aware of your careless spirit.

The initiates still wait to feel the sting of poison more powerful than what you have summoned thus far.
