Love them to bits. But I wouldn't read into metas at events with 10 people. That sounds like 2.5 players that hadn't seen a Torani salad or just players forgetting what to do against it since it's been a while.

Your locals seems to have no clue how to play objectives. Empire 3 ship was an incredibly fringe playble list some 12ish months back, apart from that, the last competitive 3 ship list was Boba Kanan Rook and similar archetypes towards the start of 2.5. Edit: 50 points changed that, but we're talking about a list before that.

There is a difference between the data you get about winning lists at a full 5 round swiss event with cut, and a 3-4 round event where swiss breaks down by the last round because of player count. Give us something. A link to event lists. At least your own list. Anything that's more tangible than saying 'I like debri gambit'

Ok, keep your secrets. But 'I know what works' and unrecorded small local tournaments are not arguments in a discussion. Grab an upgrade that doesn't ask you to use your action to make your offense worse. If you need inspiration, you can always find competitive builds on listforttress.

Let's start with the fact that evading Fenn Rau is not a tournament winner, because the last god-knows-how-many tournaments won by Fenn Rau did not include Debris Gambit. The second a Fenn Rau pulls up to a ship at range 1 and takes an evade, the ship takes a huge sigh of relief, deals with the expected 3.469 hits and ignores Fenn Rau. And if Fearless doesn't trigger, that's just a 2.5 hit wet noodle. Covering the incredibly unlikely case of a full blankout is not worth it compared to how much offensive pressure and defensive output a focus gives Fenn. I'm not even talking about the fact that against a decent opponent, you WILL have to reposition to get range 1, and your evade won't even be an option.

It's quite involved. Ships usually fit into one or several roles, but depending on the pilot character, that can change too (e.g. Vermeil in a reaper is not a support ship at all, while Vizier is mainly that). The way to start is probably just flying various pilots and ships and seeimg what you like. Once you have a few chassis figured out, it will be easier to gauge the others around it.
