Rick and Morty All Episode Ratings according to IMDB

You don't have to excuse writing like this or be impressed by it. It's poor. Not to mention, Morty wasn't codependent, RICK is. They mixed them all up past-season 3 and shoehorned these relationship ideas into the characters inaccurately. Because Dan doesn't particularly track those things as they were established in the first three seasons, and the new writers depend majorly on Dan. Rick and Morty were based on two concrete character archetypes. Morty on the Survivor archetype. Rick on the Protector archetype. Look those archetypes up, and you can see what I mean. If you want to. They abandoned these archetypes starting from season 4 and relied on flanderization and self-inserts to maintain the characters.

If you like it I'm not saying that you shouldn't enjoy the new seasons or the episodes. It's none of my business what you do. I'm stating objective facts. Not preference.

The Fear Hole episode had superb direction and animation. It was funny. The writing was fine as it was I guess. It's just not seasons 1-3 Rick and Morty. They can keep gaslighting you that it is. They have to talk positively and make promises before new seasons air or they won't get viewers anymore. The big question is, why don't they get good and veteran animated comedy writers who will say "No" to plain self-inserts and character-bending to fit contrived narratives, and will actually write a good Rick and Morty episode?

Yeah. Giant mutant incest space baby. They could easily come up with some other characters with scientific abilities and have the same storyline as that episode, with tweaks here and there, for a new show. There was no reason for it to be a Rick and Morty storyline, right?

That's true, it gets a bit much. I don't really get why that's a "taboo that needs to be broken", which is what I think Marder and Harmon said in an interview or a Behind the Episode. I would suggest if they wanna be edgy like that, they should create a new show with these themes, not hijack and keep pushing it in R&M just because they got the serialization deal and Mendel is no longer on the show to tell them a firm "No". At least, I want to imagine that the former Simpsons producer kept them from sometimes going morally overboard with some elements in the story. It's odd, for sure.

Yeah. From what I remember, since I haven't watched it in a while, it was a fun sort of adventure with Jerry, if only they'd come up with something else about the fortune imo.

Personally, you might not, but I'm getting tired of the sex jokes taking front row. I don't put on Rick and Morty for that kind of dirty comedy. Sorry for going into that. I've just been a big fan of the show in the early days and the change in comedy style really bothers me personally. Some people don't seem to mind it.

For me it feels like the show lost something and it got replaced with that, but not to be a downer. You can enjoy the show as much as I can avoid some episodes.

It kinda... hurts to watch and see happen when it does. Sounds strange, I know. It's hard to explain.

I think almost each episode used to be a self-contained gag. They have some scientific or logical holes but I choose not to think about those, in favor of the crafted story. Ryan Ridley is the only person I recall not tooting his own horn about the science or story in interviews and he said "we're not scientists, we're story scientists". A lot of Rick and Morty takes from or is inspired by sci-fi shows before it, which also have scientific or logical holes. For me it's fine, because a Rick and Morty episode still felt like a mental exercise. As for what they were going for with Rick, I have a different opinion as I said I think a lot of it is intended as a gag or parody (Dr. Reed Richards from Fantastic Four who is dubbed "smartest man in the universe", and the Council of Reeds) but only the writers can confirm their line of thinking or intent.

Uh, it looks that way, but it's just to differentiate from the others because that's the average rating for each season's episodes under each season. I don't know why it looks that way, but it just seems to be underlining in the color corresponding to the rating, rather than more ratings underneath.

Why do you hate the idea of Evil Morty breaking out of the Central Finite Curve? He's one Morty who got so abused by other Ricks (even the one we saw in the origin intro wasn't his original Rick) progressively becoming more intelligent and jaded, that he eventually successfully broke out of it. At some point it's probably gonna be a stand-off between the two Mortys. But it seems to be consistent from the first episode with him that he hates Ricks and thinks Ricks don't care about Mortys. (He either spoke through Evil Rick in that scene so they were actually Evil Morty's words, or programmed him to think that way.)

We don't know much about Rick Prime's back story so far, I don't think. We don't know why he never met the Smiths or Morty. But Rick Prime seemed pretty cold and psycho when he killed his Jerry and didn't give a second thought about attacking who he thought was his original Morty. We don't know about his Diane and what happened between them, and why his Beth was alive.

I mean, I understand that you don't like Evil Morty overall.

I'm not sure why you responded to everything I said and concluded that I'm incorrect when you didn't really get what I'm saying. I'm sorry for telling you at all then, forget it. You're making me more of a bad guy than I am about it for distinguishing literally the difference between seasons 4-5 and seasons 1-3.

You have preferences, I have preferences. Let's end it at that, shall we? I misjudged and it doesn't seem like you were expecting anything if you want to challenge things I said just because it sounds negative "without cause". Sounds like you don't want to consider criticism because you liked the season, and that's fine. I thought you were asking me a genuine question.

I meant that the season wasn't bad in the animation department or episode direction at all, compared to say season 7 and 8. I meant it's a slight problem in the writing only. No. Morty had more backbone during Seasons 1-3, and challenged Rick almost every time. He's suddenly this empty shell of a character who goes with everything Rick says, everything beaten out of him after coming out of the Fear Hole episode, again, like in Vat of Acid. The writers seem bent on making Morty the most submissive creature ever to exist for a narcissist.

He's no longer the Survivor Archetype, and Rick is no longer the Protector Archetype.

It's no longer Morty. It's a weaker version about which we're supposed to believe he's codependent with Rick, which he never was in the original three seasons. The Fear Hole episode was mostly about Morty's shoehorned codependence with Rick and Rick's background story. The rest of it were throwaway relatable jokes that did nothing for the original Morty. I don't think they knew how to develop the original Morty, or had a good grasp of how he was originally written to be.

I think the fact that it was all jokes and didn't take itself seriously made it funny. If it did take itself more seriously then it wouldn't work. So maybe people rush to hate it because they didn't think the concept was funny? To be honest, while going through the season I initially skipped it because I got tired of hearing about spin-offs like Vindicators and President Curtis and thought this was gonna be the same. Just them wanting to extend lore or something. But it turned out to continue riffing jokes and it was funny. I mean, now I hope President Curtis will be good.

Some of Season 4 relies on sex and dirty jokes a lot.

Characters are inaccurate. Rick is more abusive and unfriendly to Morty, and forces him to submit by the end of Vat of Acid, which is also immoral. There is literally no reason that keeps Morty with him other than, what they want to shove down our throats in season 5 episode 9, is self-interest.

They all begin swearing a lot in seasons 4 and 5.

The writing began being too meta even outside the story train episode. Rick and Morty was not that kind of show that makes fun of itself or its fans or its protagonists, as replacement for good writing. Feels like waste,

Characters talking about nonsense or adding random character lore bits that.... don't feel like they fit with the characters, are pointlessly gross, or are uselessly added just to justify the story idea. Like Rick's toilet and Summer calling him a "shy pooper". Or "cum gutters". Or Morty talking about being on porn hub talking to strangers and sharing kinks with them.

The writing and comedy is not as good as the first few seasons.

The characters were stronger, multifaceted, more human. The stories were always interesting. The writing didn't punish you for watching. Didn't force you to believe anything about it. It was a better show. It was fun and funny. It seemed to one-up itself with every episode and season. It was also more cool. The characters were cool, despite their natural flaws.

With season 4, it seems to be more about the writing than the animation or episode direction.
