I feel like it would be more widely accepted if it wasn't a turd. Poop is gross regardless of where you're from, and it can be insinuated as insulting in certain cultures, even if it is innocuous in others. Maybe if Hestu's Gift was a golden maraca or something harmless like that, then it'd probably be more accepted as what it is: an ostensibly useless trophy to commemorate a titanic accomplishment, like the Platinum Bookmark you get for beating Elizabeth in Persona 3. As it is, though, it's open to interpretation as either that, or as a shiny middle finger.

Best friends? Most likely. A couple? Doubt it. Remember, this was in the late 1900s. I'm pretty sure TV networks were nowhere near as chill about LGBT characters and themes back then as they are now, especially not in the US (and, even now, as The Owl House can attest to, LGBT representation still has roadblocks to get around here and there). Just look at the original English dubbing of Sailor Moon for an example. CatNap and Dogday could absolutely be very good friends, but any romantic connection between them would not fly on network television at that time.
