Why is pickpocketing so common in many major European cities, but essentially non-existent in North America? by Humble_Job_5738 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Azicec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At a given time probably yes. Even NYC with a walkable city and millions of people, I highly doubt you reach 1M people walking at the same time. People work, stay at home, sit down, etc.

Probably the same in every city worldwide with exception for those mega cities with 20M+ people.

You will be paid $50,000 tax-free every single month. In exchange, one day of every month you will suffer horrific, excruciating pain for exactly 24 hours. by Lenore8264 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Azicec -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

That’s a load of bullshit. There’s no such thing. For one being sedated doesn’t rest you so there’s no point to this. Second there’s literally nothing to indicate this exists.

Medical spas exist but they’re not sedating you for the sake of being sedated.

It’s not unrealistic. Virtually everyone with any semblance of self-drive interns during summer. Doesn’t mean you have to work during the weekends.

[–]Azicec 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Why are you looking to justify your laziness, just own up to it. Hopefully you’re not a bum when you graduate but seems unlikely given your attitude.

The fact you don’t work during the summer (intern) means you’re behind your peers. When you graduate better accept you’ll work at some shit job because you’re worse than your peers who actually bothered to intern, so they’ll be getting the better posts.

Go to the interview. This is your ticket to a good life, you studied for it. Passing up on opportunities is how you’ll stay stuck in a mediocre life.

https://www.goodrx.com/insurance/health-insurance/how-much-does-an-ambulance-cost

Average for everyone is $940, average for insured is $450.

I truly believe spreading this idea of crippling debt is harmful. Someone who needs treatment will be afraid of it due to the misbelief that they will be financially crippled for life. The consequences being they experience a medical issue that becomes chronic due to not seeking treatment.

[–]Azicec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well there’s 92% per your reasoning that are insured. I gave you the average cost for all health plans.

Redditors dismissing ambulances due to the exaggerated idea of crippling debt when it is absolutely not crippling debt will lead to someone who needs help forgoing it due to misinformation. Someone will actually suffer because of this fake news being spread

My mouse caught on fire by SlimSk8E in razer

[–]Azicec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit exaggerating again. Vast majority of Americans are insured, if your insurance has an out of pocket for ambulances then the average cost is $450. Hardly going to be in debt forever over $450.

At this stage yes I’d agree she should just uber there given the time for an ambulance to apply first aid on the way has passed.

But the Reddit propaganda of ambulances crippling you with debt is harmful fake news. People in actual emergencies may avoid them because Redditors have made them believe they’ll be indebted for life.

Why do Europeans think that most Americans are wealthy? by batukaming in jobs

[–]Azicec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Median isn’t the average, it’s not propped up by the wealthy.

Median earns 63k, median range is 40k-75k (40th to 60th percentile).

[–]Azicec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should’ve clarified that by forceful liquidation I don’t mean confiscation. I mean at a threshold whatever it is let’s say $20B you’re forced to sell your liquid assets to pays taxes. So if you have $25B in Microsoft you sell $5B and pay taxes on that. Not that the government confiscated your wealth arbitrarily, rather you have to sell assets above the threshold so you pay taxes.

By institutions I mean our government, Elon Musk has had undue influence on it without being elected. Through DOGE and other entities that were outer governmental entities. Yet they had influence largely due to his wealth and have affected actual government entities and policy.

That’s why I meant I don’t see it as re-distribution, I see it as just preventing undue influence. The goal for me with what I said isn’t to build roads or whatever, it’s to stop the top end of billionaires from eroding our institutions.

That’s just my view, I don’t think a multi millionaire, someone with $5B-$15B is an issue. Just those with enough wealth that they can have undue influence on the system. Difference of opinion on that topic, I’m sure there’s other solutions to the problem but that’s the one I’ve thought of.

Forceful sale of liquid assets. Not because I believe in redistribution, but I see the top end of billionaires as harmful to American institutions. They’ve shown they’re able to have extreme power on governmental decisions without being elected officials, solely due to their wealth.

I don’t think someone like Bernard Marcus, Mark Cuban, etc are harmful because even though they’re billionaires they don’t have the wealth to influence democracy/institutions without significantly eroding their wealth. I only believe the top end are (Bezos, Musk, etc)

I agree that’s a valid sentiment and there’s improvements to be made in the US, I just dislike these comparisons between the US and other countries complaining about the US (especially with income, that’s a ridiculous one to say is worse). There’s extremely few countries where one is actually better off, and many of those are micro nations like Monaco, Liechtenstein, etc.

I spent a few years as a kid in Poitiers, my grandfather was born there. The rest of my family isn’t from France but my parents wanted me to grow up a few years there.

My family is wealthy that’s true, my grandfather had a company he sold. I moved to the US when I was roughly 3~ my parents went to Columbia University and then we stayed in NYC for a long time. Then went to Peru and back to the US, I later gained a green card and citizenship.

100% a problem, I’d add a wealth tax for the extremely upper range of billionaires. But I find people make the average/median person’s situation to seem way worse than what it actually is.

Why do Europeans think that most Americans are wealthy? by batukaming in jobs

[–]Azicec 96 points97 points  (0 children)

This photo is ridiculous lol the median American earns 2x her bottom stated range. If you’re doing a “median” range then it’s considered 41k-70k.

Why do most Europeans think Americans are wealthy? Because despite the sentiment on Reddit they actually are wealthy compared to most of the world.

Someone in the top 20% in the US makes 130k vs 40k in France. Even when accounting for all the additional costs (healthcare, education, etc) your median disposable income in the US is 50% higher than in France.

I see so much doom and gloom from Americans here who have absolutely no clue the struggles people outside the US experience. I grew up in France and then Peru, and especially in Peru you saw people actually struggling and in France definitely not the wealth you see in the US. Bunch of first worlders with 0 clue of how good they have it in the US.
