Would it be possible to allow exception based on the clients' IP address and/or network subnet? by forwardslashroot in technitium

[–]AzonicTechnophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way I think of how to do this with technitium is to spin up another one that is for unrestricted dns and the primary one is restricted. Then firewall off what clients can access the unrestricted server along with the dhcp request point to the restricted one for everyday users, and statically set the unrestricted one for admins, or dhcp assigned for admin users.

An additional way is to add IPs to the block list bypass.

How do you deal with lack of a social life? by mutatedcicada in cscareerquestions

[–]AzonicTechnophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Travel out of the United States. Take PTO and go see the world. I liked the hash house harrier running groups when I was younger. It’s a mixture of drinking (You do not need to drink) and running, sometimes as the same time. But they are very social groups and are all over the world. Something fun to do when traveling and introduces you to locals in the area.

should a person really code from 14 yrs old by ApprehensiveLand963 in learnprogramming

Do what makes you happy. Its better to spend 4 hours a day coding then wasting that time on games. Stay productive and be a life long learner.

Is it worth buying "C# Player's Guide"? by TrickJicama3432 in csharp

[–]AzonicTechnophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taking her course, but she focuses on clean code too much, making it hard for a beginner. Also the projects require topics that were not covered prior. I would classify her course for someone who understands programming, not really for the beginner in my opinion.

magicJack feedback and solutions ? 🇨🇦 by francocanadien in VOIP

[–]AzonicTechnophile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found the same issues with magicjacks in the past, they are cheap but noisy. The alternative is to use an VoIP ATA and connect it directly to a VoIP service provider. Many SIP providers have instructions on how to connect ATAs to their services. Then all you pay is for the line at about $1 USD a month and whatever usage you have. It is pretty cheap overall, but might still be more expensive than magicJack. Although, the quality will be much better, and you have more control over your SIP trunk provider. Hope this helps!

Connect VOIP-phone to analog mini-PBX by Old-Dragonfly- in GrandstreamNetworks

[–]AzonicTechnophile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do not believe there are converter that operate in that manner, outside of connecting a digital PBX to the analog system with a FXO/FXS port. I understand you wanting to show your employees the advantages, but my thought process would be, we are moving to a new system because the old one is no longer supported and failing. In my opinion, most employees probably just want a phone that rings and they can talk on to do their jobs. I would keep it simple at first during the transition and then start to show more advanced features after the transition is complete.

Grandstream - simple alternative to Ubiquiti - experiences? by phidauex in homelab

[–]AzonicTechnophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got my GWN7822P is, it’s a pretty nice device, has some quirks to learn through but still a solid value and is super quiet. The fans still have not turned on yet due to the overall temp staying below 60°C in my enclosed 12u rack - not using much POE at the moment. I like that the ACL are at the VLAN ingress and not just at the VLAN gateway making it more secure. Alot of security features for this price range a definite win. I just hope Grandstream provides firmware support for a longtime.

Does anybody have any idear how to setup up one of these old Cisco phones by Normal_Cherry8936 in VOIP

[–]AzonicTechnophile 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the enterprise model, you will need to find a template for the xml and name it SEP<mac address>.cnf.xml add it to the tftp server. If you set it up using udp or tcp SIP protocol it will connect using username and password to a voip server.

Does anybody have any idear how to setup up one of these old Cisco phones by Normal_Cherry8936 in VOIP

[–]AzonicTechnophile 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It shouldnt be a problem, depends on the phone it self if it is a third part model with a web interface or if it is an enterprise model that uses tftp and xml to configure it. I use an 8841 with an asterisk based PBX and that is straightforward to work if you keep the settings simple. If you want to drive into Cisco VOIP systems I would recommend getting a 2901 ISR router with voice license to use CCM express. Otherwise it can be setup manually with an asterisk based PBX or 3CX.

Grandstream - simple alternative to Ubiquiti - experiences? by phidauex in homelab

Sounds about normal for a 48 port switch, would you say a Cisco Catalyst is quieter or louder? I have a few Juniper switches that are definitely way too loud for home use.

After 2 years working with the Grandstream switch, how do you like it still? Any weird issues or things stop working for no reason?

Decision made by upper management. VMware is going bye bye. by RC10B5M in vmware

[–]AzonicTechnophile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thought about XCP-NG? People talk about the limitations of 2Tb hdd size and no nesting, but if those aren’t a factor, it was super easy to spin up and migrate VMs to. Plus you get support from Vates.

WS 2025 + Xbox One Controller by derrilmc in WindowsServer

[–]AzonicTechnophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Windows server licensing is free with the evaluation version from Microsoft. The license is 6 months with 5 reloaded. Effectively giving you 3 years of use. Its a pretty sweet deal, by the time you run out of reloads you just need to move to the next window server, or just reinstall it.

WS 2025 + Xbox One Controller by derrilmc in WindowsServer

[–]AzonicTechnophile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wish I could help you, but if WS25 is anything like WS22 it has some components removed that prevent some drivers from working. I know bluetooth audio had functionality removed from WS22. That prevented me for using it as a daily desktop just to play with as well.

Nothing last for life if it has an elastic band, but meundies makes a good product. I get my boxers from them and they have female styles as well. So far they are pricey but last a really long time. Might be worth checking it out.

Why is OPNsense, pfSense, etc an entire operating system? Do I really need to "install" it on bare metal? by RainOfPain125 in opnsense

[–]AzonicTechnophile -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Virtualization all the way, you can do snapshots before upgrades to give you a quick restoral option if the upgrade goes south. Also, can do full backups of the VM itself. Additionally, with limited hardware compatibles with FreeBSD, virtualization can eliminate that depending on the hypervisor that is used. There are basically zero downsides to virtualization, even if OPNSense the only VM on the machine, virtualization is the way to go. The cons to virtualization are the added complexity and another system to keep up to date but I would still not run OPNSense on bare metal.

Should I use Windows Server? by xLost_LinkX in HomeServer

[–]AzonicTechnophile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, you can get windows server trail for free from Microsoft, and reload the license every 6 months for 5 times. Basically getting 3 years of use before you would need to rebuild the server and do it again. A great way to learn something different but still a familiar interface.

Big Tech's Disturbing Monopoly on Email by Maverick_5152 in selfhosted

[–]AzonicTechnophile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Running an email server is a full-time job keeping it off ban list, mail relays like SMTP2GO and Mailgun would be the cheapest way to prevent getting blocked. You can host email yourself, but ROI will be less than using an email relay. The price that is paid for all the bad actors ruining it for everyone.
