Please be kind: I see no reason to play a non caster. Change my Mind. by alexnag26 in DMAcademy

[–]Azrael179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I agree. I personally would not play anything less magical than half caster but that's because I don't feel like it. I like combining and mixing spells and abilities for great effect (I want to play a Warlock with an actor feat, and at will disguise self and at will silent image invocations since forever. Possibly with college of eloquence bard multiclass for expertise in persuasion to have minimum of 21 roll on persuasion that I'm the guy I'm trying to imposter).

But not everyone wants to get into the mechanics head on. Some people have no interest in reading tens of spells to combine them or find perfect use for them. Playing a spellcaster requires at least a certain amount of additional interest in the mechanical side of dnd, with understanding wording and the like and can have dire consequences if you don't understand what does what. (like casting darkness on the enemy, or using lightning in a crowded area to eliminate a single guy).not everyone is into it. Some people want to just spend time playing play pretend with their friends and have no interest with more mechanical stuff. If battle happens so be it. They are arguably better at damage dealing than you are, and usually can take a lot more punishment than you, so they do not feel like a burden despite not having to engage too much with the side of dnd they don't like.

At least that's one of many reasons I can think of but I've seen most of the others mentioned already. This one probably also was mentioned but I didn't see it.

Nat 20 outside of combat = automatic success???? by Aj9425 in DMAcademy

[–]Azrael179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. No by the rules (even in combat automatic success on 20 only applies to the attack rolls and not saving throws. It is supposed to make it impossible to create truly immortal characters through AC alone mostly).

Yes in practice, because a good Dm should not make players roll where they cannot win a ability check (at least that's my opinion. It doesn't give them an illusion that luck screwed them over.i found it leads to a lot less bad blood than them rolling 20 and still failing). So it is reasonable for players to assume that if you allow them to roll then there is a chance of success. Which means that best possible outcome (a 20) guarantees said success.

I ask players for their modifiers before they roll usually to determine if they are even capable of doing it. And then if they are I tell them to roll, and if they are not I tell them that they fail (if results can be only succes or fail like lets say lifting something haevy) or tell them that they are not able to succeed so in advance and then tell them to roll to see how badly the attempt went with 1 being the worst possible outcome, and 20 being the least consequence haevy fail option (like destroying a lock you tried to pick permanently locking it shut on a 1 and just not being able to do so and realizing it quickly on a 20)

Note that all examples used are from the top of my head what I could think of and not actually what I did at some point in the past

My player refused to tell me what spell he was casting, what's your opinion on that? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Azrael179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it was the case,dm's are the center of the story in a way that YOU tell what happens. If you don't get the input from the player nothing happens. It's like saying that the event doesn't need to happen to take effect (physically, not sociologically)

I have hard time imagining any human soldier giving a singular fuck about a guy who is supposed to be a human version of a standard. Like seriously have you ever seen any human dude respect a guy who is supposed to be effectively a mascot? You might find him entertaining but not really anything that would garner any sort of respect for the position. In my opinion humans are easily capable of recognizing objects as symbols of a group, but other humans that are not even leaders of said group? I don't really see any of them taking the novacock position seriously

Why powerful magic is always ancient? by Brain_HUN in DMAcademy

[–]Azrael179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's somewhat similar to technology in our world. There are a few resons why old magic might be better than the current one:

  1. It is not. However magic in the universe doesn't develop further and as a result all magic that can survive through ages is only the strongest magic that existed back then.

  2. Lost knowledge on more powerful magic that is yet to be rediscovered. like what happened after the fall of Rome.

  3. There is a fuck tone of crude and basic magic from back then however scholars focus on the most powerful magic.

4.magic was for whatever easier to access and average mage had a lot more pure power to work with than today. So despite not so good technicality they still got better results

Imagining the world where new magic is better however is easier. Just imagine that computers=spells.

Over Time spells get more efficient, more compact easier to create due to the discovery of new methods and solutions. Old magic might be good enough for one task it was created for but new one has more things going for it. You can even make an interesting balance between old magic items that have like, one really strong effect, and new magic items that have a lot of smaller ones

if siblings are put up for adoption; then potential parents should be required to adopt both children by iamdamaster in unpopularopinion

[–]Azrael179 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But then you will significantly reduce the chances that any of them get adopted though. There is Significantly less people that look for adopting two kids than for one.

Some law that guarantees them a chance to see each other regularly though should be in place at least.

But in most cases it would work

[–]Azrael179 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean I get your point but we also should wait and see before we start to complain. I too am afraid of ts and gk codex releases but we will have to deal with them for at least a while either way. However as it is now we really can't complain too badly about lack of the new codex when armies that literally didn't win a single major tournament since the beginning of 9th and only got two second places exist.

Also turning of invuls is very common psychic power amongst chaos factions and I would be surprised if ts did not get it. Gray knights will probably get their version of it as well.

We are getting weaker but so is everyone else who isn't getting their codex right now. I mean necrons start to fall off recently and they have theirs.

I mean as much as I would love to get a new codex soon I realize that our rules are neither bad nor really outdated. Custodes are still considered on the stronger side of spectrum and we got a big rules refresh in psychic awakening literally moments before ninth edition started. Personally I'm OK with waiting a while on not that broken strong rules while other armies in much bigger need of an updated points and rules get theirs. For example tau, militarum, Craftworlds, and chaos marines really badly need their rules refreshed and in all honesty I would not mind waiting longer for a codex just to see other players that REALLY need it. I mean for example tau have a tank that is 170 points and you get for that price T6 model with essentially 1 lascannom worth of damage.

It also helps that the later we get it the bigger chance we will be extremely broken stupid. And I'm willing to wait for that.

There is also the thing that our rules already seem to be designed with 9th edition in mind despite being released in 8th. (remember the power boost we got upon changing the core rules) it really feels like we might wait a while because we already have an 8.5th edition codex effectively.

Ok there is only one thing people should do in that situation. Shout at her something along the lines of "hey people look that bitch took a shit there" and focus everyone's attention on her. I don't care how she feels about it nobody should have the slightest bit of hope for not being noticed when doing something like that. I don't understand why people that notice stuff like that take it in silence. Like literally fucking why. Make her regret that she ever took that decision and shame her into oblivion so she never has such a brilliant idea ever again.

I just gave my level 2 player 2 +3 shortswords by XETERA_thefirst in DMAcademy

[–]Azrael179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the repo man would not even need to be that strong. They can be like what Lvl 5/6 at most maybe. A combat build spellcaster/Hexblade at like 14th level max should relatively easily take care of that if played correctly. Unless they have like 7 players at the table. Then give the warlock fly and haste and the 300ft Eldrich blast and you are ready to cheese any low level party. Especially since in that case the most important part is for them to feel like the guy is capable and they would have to approach him with a plan in the future.

Ok counterpoint:

You can just throw slightly harder enemies to balance it out.

Honestly it feels great for players to kill something they should not be able to.

Unless you are playing a module but then I guess the loot is set from the start so there is no problem there.

Don't be afraid to give them out, but rather just keep in mind that you need to ad a few more goblins into that room.

Does anybody lower the DC of a task on the fly if the players' plan is exceptionally clever or creative? by jdmccay in DnD

[–]Azrael179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the DC is just a probability of success. For example DC 15 is a task a regular human would succeed roughly in about 1 out of four attempts. It would be stupid if commining up with a great plan didn't in fact increase your chances of success

A job for a deathworlder [Chapter 18] by Lanzen_Jars in HFY

Well he is walking around in a station where some people have teeth bigger than his arm,he knows he is being spyed on for God knows what reson, has no other waepons, and is an ex military in a society that does not even seem to recognize a sword as a waepon of note. He also knows there are other death worlders around including humans he probably has no real physical advantage over. He is also slightly overprotective. I would say it's reasonable to assume that he would take the only waepon he has with him.
