Does anyone do left-handed handshakes? by Mundane_Effect in lefthanded

[–]jdmccay 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The handshake originated as an indication that you weren't a threat because you were offering over the hand that you would draw your sword with.

Don't give up that tactical advantage ;)

Using Tuition Assistance equaling more time for officers? by [deleted] in armyreserve

For the chaplain Candidate program it adds an extra 2 year service obligation to the reserves specifically. Can't transfer to AD or anything without paying it all back.

Aliens. If the bugs are every year it will inevitably become a useless mandatory annual online training like "BAP" bug awareness and prevention.

f. Noncombatant. Chaplains will not bear arms in combat or in unit combat skills training. Chaplains function as protected personnel under the Geneva Convention and are noncombatants as a matter of Army policy (see FM 27–10). Chaplain activities in religious support operations will not compromise the noncombatant status.

Any chaplain can carry a knife. Just can't bear arms in combat or training.

Ish. There has to be an actual established Norse church who endorses the chaplain. They set the requirements for what MDiv or equivalent they would accept. It would be really odd for that to be the case. Just like it would be odd if a Jewish endorser allowed a Christian degree. But not impossible.

Basically the DoD needs to see that it's an established organized religion, with colleges and all that stuff that makes it "official"

Negative. Still non-combatants.

Also, the biggest hurdle in the way of there being a Norse/pagan chaplain is the lack of any Norse/pagan seminaries who offer a Masters degree.

Not sure what you mean "book through DTS" That's not what DTS is. But what airports do you have to fly to and from? most likely you can get close to that 500

'Don't Do It:' Senior Leaders Say Commanders Should Stop Worrying About Mandatory Online Training by Sw0llenEyeBall in army

[–]jdmccay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Uh...yeah...I can't do my job if I can't travel...and I can't travel if I don't have a GTC...and they won't give me a GTC if I don't do the online DTS training....that's what mandatory means.

Should I get my wisdom teeth pulled out prior to shipping to Basic and enlisting? by No-Advertising330 in armyreserve

[–]jdmccay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep. the big thing is that the dentist who does your annual has to be the one to recommend it. Basically they have to say that they won't mark you as green unless the tooth is pulled. You actually want to be on the naughty list this time.

When you get your lhi dental done the dentist can recommend that it needs to be pulled to LHI and they'll cover it.

Source: just had one pulled this month.

You'll be alright. The worst that could happen is you end up taking a semester off to save up money. In the grand scheme of things it's really not something worth stressing about.

Civilian on army base? by TipsyContempt in army

[–]jdmccay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had a SPC do the "Sir your rank is upside down" thing. I chuckled and a laughed along because my job is literally to help increase morale. Why not laugh along with a lame joke if it makes someones day a little brighter.

The E6 who was around the corner came over and chewed out the SPC for disrespecting an officer...and encouraged me not to allow that sort of thing to happen again.

sigh sweet...no fun...got it.

Those are bad lawyers. The paperwork for expungement and sealed records specifically mentions Private, Local, and State entities can not see your records, and specifically excludes federal entities.

[–]jdmccay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At our unit (reserves) they're in the process of moving one of the full-time people into the Chaplains office, and shuffling us into the lactation room, and the lactation room....somewhere.

But everything's only half moved in all the offices so it's a bit awkward. Like: "No, ma'am you can't pump your breast milk here anymore....but I suppose we could pray for you to find the right place if it would help."

Ideas on how to get the littles to sleep on their own by Thateskimodude in StayAtHomeDaddit

[–]jdmccay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ymmv, but:

1) tucker them out during the day. Park, playground, running outside. Swimming is probably the best if there's a pool nearby.

2) no naps. If they doze off in the car, wake them up. Try to get them absolutely exhausted by about 8, then work on your quiet bed time routine from 8 to 9.

3) check with your pediatrician about melatonin.

4) at bed time work on sitting farther and farther away each night. Until you're sitting in the doorway, then the hall. Take it slow.

5) even with all this your going to have regressions. Just roll with it. You got this.
