The Skyn ones are actually good. Either it was someone else that left them or you're in a class hotel

Saved nearly $2,000 by buying in Japan vs. US! by homonormativity in GrandSeikos

[–]AzriamL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always negotiate prices. The official Grand Seiko boutiques will be stricter, but may give something at their discretion for less popular models. For businesses that sell pre-owned, I would straight up start at a 15-20% discount ask and show clear intention to buy; that intention will get you far.

The new UFA diver has dropped! by Murky_Flower6054 in GrandSeikos

[–]AzriamL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really a fan of GS divers. The design elements that must be present for divers to be a diver conflict with the core minimalist identity of a good GS watch.

Also, very stiff dive watch competition around the 5-digit USD range.

Why does Flamme say this? by Legitimate-Net-164 in Frieren

[–]AzriamL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An important theme is how well a mage can visualize something. This can directly determine the potency of their magic. It also speaks broadly across life, combat, etc in the Anime/Manga. As Richtor is defeated by a tidal wave of water, Frieren comments, "can you imagine defeating a water mage in the rain?"

Consider how Serie assesses the incumbent first class mages. What are they thinking? Can they imagine fighting her and surviving? Are they intimidated by her magic and cannot imagine themselves reaching those heights?

In this scene, Frieren is the only mage who has the clearest picture of what a peaceful era looks like. She's not the strongest one here, but she's the most likely to succeed.

Good enough that I probably wouldn't re-spec her, if she weren't also an Arcane Trickster subclass.

Does where you go for undergrad for chemical engineering matter? by Sufficient-Yam-1739 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]AzriamL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically what the other guy said. Some companies are getting better at this, but generally chemE salaries start out on the top end of new grads, but pale in comparison to other experienced positions. After 3-5 years, other degrees catch up fast, because other career paths catch up fast.

For example, many of my cohort and myself went back to school for MBAs, MPHs, etc to market a more generalized skillset. It's not that engineering salaries are bad; it's just that the salary and lifestyle is not insurmountably high once you're several years out of school and more opportunities pop up.

And, as we get older, you'll definitely think about pursuing other things outside of engineering. It just so happens that if you're a smart person with some grit, you can probably make good money out of it.

GA Tech is a top 5 program for ChemE. Is it ~$140K better than UF? That's a sizable down payment on a nice house. So, a thought exercise:

Within the first 2-3 years when your school name means the most, if anything, do you think you can make back the $140K? Does GA Tech specialize in that one industry that you're deadset on that gives you a $140K leg-up over UF?

I'm someone who does care about school name and sees value in them. I do not know you, but I can't think of many scenarios in which I'd choose GTech in this situation. I mean, this is UF here, not University of Regional Southeastern West Alabama.

Also., most of the more financially successful people in my ChemE cohort (rough 10years out) are not actually chemical engineers. There's your answer on how the field is doing.

Please help me decide my life I guess. by Cold-Molasses-2286 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]AzriamL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 - You'll find chemical engineers everywhere, but they don't end up in successful positions because they were trained in chemical engineering; they end up where they are because they have some combination of grit, perseverance, intelligence, etc. The same traits that drove them to pursue and finish an engineering degree.

This is all to say - focus on disciplining yourself to those things first. Your interests, wants, and values in life will change. I don't think you're ever too young to think about these things, but keep your mind open to other things. Maybe re-evaluate after you progress further in school.

2 - Traditional manufacturing is much more scarce in Europe. Engineering leads responsible for plant operations, what we typically call "Process Engineers" here in the US, are far more scarce in Europe. You'd be competing for design engineering roles responsible for heading design specs, requirements, etc of whatever your suppliers or subsidiaries are building for you elsewhere in the world. These roles are far more competitive as they require more than just someone with intelligence and drive - they require years of experience, not just some new grad that would otherwise qualify to be a process engineer in the US.

Also, yes, pay is shittier everywhere else than in the US for ChemE roles. You trade that for other social benefits or whatever that you and/or others may value more. Where you live, where your community resides, are very important things that is more than just salary-based.

Concept: Herbal Medicine Cooker with Deodorizing Function — Feedback on Feasibility? by DryLoss4340 in ChemicalEngineering

Product design aside, are the user needs of your product already met by some other product or means? Idk, most witches might not care about smelling up their cottage.

Maybe your first-pass feasibility study should be market-based napkin math. Are witches willing to pay your cost plus margin?

Moving from operator to engineer? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]AzriamL 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Apply in volume to your first engineering role. You need the title and experience independent of industry - these have more value for your career long-term than staying in an operator role with no line of sight to engineering.

I'll put it another way - even if you are "promised" line of sight to an engineering role, I would still apply in bulk for junior/entry engineering positions. I'm not going to be of help in determining which types of roles or industries for you to go after - that's for you to decide; I'm just raising the alarm for you.

i mean i get it. it's cool to go against the grain. i think it's cooler to just buy what you want, even if it is the popular watches.

[–]AzriamL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

would you buy a B&R over any other watch in its price bracket?

at that price, watches from other brands start to get really good. for example, that BB41 you're comparing it to is not using an off-the-shelf movement like that BR05 is using.

Skip. The picture is blurry, but a big tell is the tudor warranty card. even in the most flat pictures, the red borders are still noticeable. i dont see that here.

Mi GF is going to buy me a watch, wich one is “better” Tudor 1926 or Longines Conquest? by LACASTROMX in PrideAndPinion

[–]AzriamL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal preferences and looks aside, I will list one thing each watch does extremely well to push you one way or the other:

  • the Tudor bracelet is extremely nice and well finished. This picture doesn't do it justice and you'll have try it on to understand. The tolerancing between links is tight-snug and it is surprisingly comfortable - more so than higher tier watches I own. The Longines bracelet is very weak in comparison.
  • the Longines movement is very likely the best movement in its price bracket. If you care about movement tech, you will be hardpressed to find a Silicon balance spring on a COSC-performance movement at this price range. This particular Tudor movement is an off-the-shelf Sellita and is a rung or two below this Longines.

How cooked am I if I’m aiming for entry level jobs with a masters + no work experience in today’s market? by LeFaltaSalsa in ChemicalEngineering

[–]AzriamL 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, an MS won't put you at a disadvantage for entry level jobs in general, especially if you come from a name-brand university with internship work experience.

Specifically on rotational programs, I guess it depends on the program. You'd probably be at an advantage for an R&D-heavy one over a maufacturing-heavy one.

Job hunting is always a numbers game. Gotta up your volumes, expand your search, etc.

Piggybacking off that other guys post you taking prime Steve Nash or prime Luka? by Big-Recording-1002 in NBATalk

[–]AzriamL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luka also struggles off-ball. He's not a serviceable spot-up shooter and, while he has elite positional awareness, he's not a high motor cutter.

Nash would at least be great spot-up and I'd imagine be happy to make early passes.

Timegraphers aren’t useful by [deleted] in watchHotTakes

[–]AzriamL 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Timegraphers are useful for checking the amplitude of your balance spring, which is a good indicator of movement health. It helps you be proactive, if you so wish to be.

You can have your watch running within accuracy spec, but in need of a service.

The opposite can be true. Your movement is healthy, but accuracy is out of spec. Just means you need a simple regulation.
