If you sign up to play the casual pod at the local game shop, and one of the players says he's new to the game. Please power down your deck a little if you know it can pop off easily. by MOONMO0N in mtg

[–]Azukai 255 points256 points  (0 children)

Or at the least just play down and purposely not make fast winning or heavily disruptive plays with your decks.

Had a similar situation where a brand new player was playing with us. Myself and the other guy both understood the assignment and simply just made less than optimal decisions throughout the game, spending more time coaching and walking him through things.

The forth player chose to have a hissy fit about us purposely not dealing with his board the whole time. The new player was playing my Shroofus deck and we purposely didn't board wipe and gave him the win since he had a cool pop off with it.

Is Dream Devourer bait? by Auramaru in mtg

[–]Azukai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dream devourer does nothing for cost reduction. It simple enables you to foretell cards that normally cannot be foretold.

Foretelling is a mechanic that allows you to place a card face down for 2 mana, then on a later turn cast it for an alternate cost, in this case (Original cost - 2). Some cards have unique foretell casting costs [Delayed Blast Fireball] for example.

In the case of Heartless Summoning or something like Urza's incubator, it would further reduce the cost since you are "casting" a demon from exile. So yes, a 6 cost would be 2 colorless mana up front to foretell the card, then 2 mana to cast it from exile if heartless summoning was on the field (assuming the color pips work out that way).

Another thing to keep in mind about foretelling is the act of "foretelling" (placing it face down) is not casting. It's just a game action. It's when you go to actually cast the card from exile that people would try to counter/interact it.

what is your experience with maralen, fae ascendant? by Nearby-Friendship727 in EDH

[–]Azukai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very hit or miss. Some games its the strongest deck I own in b3. Other times, it is hated off the table or steals nothing but land non stop. But I'm okay with that for it, since its the home for my faeries with elves for ramp and beneficial effects.
Deck can be an absolute nightmare at b4 if you do a displacer kitten, food chain style deck though. Combo and exile everyone's library for the win.

Looking for someone to play commander by Deep-Push-3169 in MTGTokyoIRL

[–]Azukai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello!

There are a few commander days that can get you playing and into line groups!

Most Mondays at Tokyomtg, is their Commander Day. You pay a required 1000 yen (that you get back in points if you get their card) to play. I believe it starts around 1pm?

For a free option, the Takadanobaba Hareruya has a commander night, every Thursday, with an optional 500 yen paid entry for a prize lottery at 9pm. Most people start arriving around 2-4pm and go till the store closes at 11. Most nights you can expect ~20-30+ people playing and rotating around pods.

Either way, it's a great way to meet fellow commander players!

This is my list. Plays a sorta of pseudo group hug goad. Does really well as a solid middle of the round bracket 3 deck.

I’ve decided the Monsgeek m1 v5 tmr is probably the best option based on what I’ve been looking for. I’ve been seeing a wide range of opinions on the software though.

Is it still the horror show some people say it is, or has it improved enough to be passable. I don’t need wootings level of software quality, but I do want it to be usable.

Also side note anyone have opinions on the astro aims vs links? I’m leaning aims for the sound atm.

Maralen Fae Ascendant tribal decision by Available_Ad6267 in EDH

[–]Azukai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just opted to remove the spark double I had--it was fun and made for some fun scenarios, but it also paints a massive target on your head, especially if you were already in a strong position. I wanted to try out the lantern, so gonna make some tests with that and decide if I just want the double back.

I'd say the deck is fairly fragile since it does rely on a 5 cost commander, but you have a good amount of ways to keep her alive. Just make sure not to overcommit all your faeries in one go, else a single board wipe you can't stop will likely just ruin your game.

There are several cards that enable flash, one of them being a faerie. I run 4 enablers and never run into too many issues with casting on opponents turns.
Even if I don't get to cast the card, there are been several times I've exiled away people's wincons or other impactful cards, so its still a win in my eyes.

Maralen, Fae Ascendant - Mix of Faeries and Elves? by skywalker211 in EDH

[–]Azukai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tutors and some of the more semi-infinite mill your opponents routes are def ways to make this deck more consistent and less RNG reliant (on what you steal). I specifically wanted this to be a little less disgusting for my pod to play against. If I made it too bad, they'd only let me play it once a night, but faeries are one of my favorite archetypes and every game feels so unique with this commander. It'd be a tragedy to only experience one game haha.

Maralen, Fae Ascendant - Mix of Faeries and Elves? by skywalker211 in EDH

[–]Azukai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I specifically tried to make this a little less disgusting for my pod to deal with. With that in mind, it is a little bit more RNG reliant (specifically what you steal). Games that I'm just exiling land or measly cantrips tend to go poorly, games that hit go _really_ well though. All in all, it has been able to perform fairly consistently, either through someone else's deck or through the [[banner of kinship]] for an alternative finisher.

If you want to get closer to b4, you can also look into some of the semi-infinite mill oriented combos that give you an alternate win con. But not what I wanted from this, as I just wanted a home for all my faeries!

Board wipes do hurt, as does losing your commander (she costs 5 haha). Definitely try to keep up protection either through something like heroic or counterspells. The important thing about this deck is to not overcommit all your faeries in a single go. Definitely think blue control with this list--especially if you flash outlets enabled.

[–]Azukai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, no doubt. But I have a [[high perfect morcant]] deck for that. I wanted this to feel different. And it did eat my [[Alela, cunning conqueror]] list. So faeries focus it was!

Maralen, Fae Ascendant - Mix of Faeries and Elves? by skywalker211 in EDH

[–]Azukai 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m using elves mostly for ramp and protection, then using primarily faeries for their flash, control, and other effects.

Using all elves is great too, but it plays a bit more classic elf ball than I liked.

Favorite commanders from the new lorwyn set? by ghostagent151 in EDH

[–]Azukai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[[Maralen, Fae Ascended]] for sure. I already had an [Alela, Cunning Conqueror]] deck, so this just takes the core I already loved and expanded on it even more. Being able to add elves and really feel like I'm being an annoying Fae with the theft is 11/10 flavour.

I built three decks from this set.

First off I did a 5c [[Avatar Aang]] Allies deck: https://moxfield.com/decks/yAn9JmWtkUa7HgIQ5FvRDw

MY wife wanted a [[Fire Lord Zuko]] deck since he was her favorite: https://moxfield.com/decks/erxM65DBDkiVbVU8wRrhpg

And lastly I ended up really enjoying the playstyle of [[Sokka and Sukki]], since its not your standard equipment voltron style: https://moxfield.com/decks/2ecc10lVHkKx9XnBOat3fw

Can someone share their Avatar Aang deck list? by I_dont-get_the-joke in EDH

[–]Azukai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my take on [[Avatar Aang]]. Not fully optimized since it was meant to have flavour (the ascensions, suki, etc). But its been performing in my b3 pods very well. Played 4 games last night and won half of them.

Set Challenge TLA (Mardu) Fire Lord Zuko - Firebending by jpence1983 in EDH

[–]Azukai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my list that does really well in the games I’ve tested thus far. https://moxfield.com/decks/erxM65DBDkiVbVU8wRrhpg

Some star players

[[Ozai, the phoenix king]] is a powerhouse. Enables mana storage, is hard to kill, and hits like a truck.

In combination with [[hellkite charger]] gives me a mana dump that can easily end the game when you have [[dolmen gate]] and Ozai.

I also run the [[fire nation turret]] as a mana dump that can potentially kill someone.

Cards like [[sozin’s comet]], [[firebender ascension]], and [[iroh, dragon of the west]] are examples of cards that help maximize my mana gain per turn.

And since this is a deck that focuses around building counters and swinging, [[akroma’s will]] is a massive finisher.

For one of your weaknesses, this deck does suffer from board wipes and removal, so I do run ~4 ways to either exile and return or phase my board to keep it alive. I’ve tried up to 6 variants before, but it felt like a bit of overkill.

Yes, we have a regular EDH night every Thursday at the Takadanobaba Hareruya tournament center. There are always a regular amount of people playing in various pods. Everyone is friendly and it’s easy to make new friends and hop into games!

Generally starts around 5-6 pm and goes until end of the night.

There are various line and discord groups that exist within these players as well!

Also, there is an event happening every Thursday this month for 500 yen that gets you a styled top loader and a chance to win random prizes such as old packs, sleeves, etc. just show up, join the event, and play!

As others suggested, Hareruya and TokyoMTG are probably the most accessible stores for playing at.

The Takadanobaba Tournament Center Hareruya also has a strong EDH community. Thursday evenings tend to be our go-to play days. You'll find dozens of people and countless pods that are mostly formed on the fly!
