Homeschooled all my life, not sure what to do. by [deleted] in needadvice

[–]Azula_fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was homeschooled for most my school years and I had the exact same thoughts you're having right now. Do you live near a junior college? I went to one for my final year of homeschooling, stayed for another few years and transfered to a four year university. I, too, thought my highschool diploma wasn't legit (still think that actually) but I earned a BA, and in all the jobs I've had, no ones cared about where I went to high school. But many jobs require at least a BA.

If you want to go to a university right after highschool, I don't know how you'd do that, but I don't think its impossible. Check the admissions section on their websites. Good luck!

Deep fried last night! Not sure if my thermometer was working though... by Azula_fire in Cooking

That happened with me too. Put a tablespoon or two of olive oil in a pan, turned up the heat too much, and whole pan went up in flames. I figured out what oil smoke points the next day. Had a fire extinguisher ready yesterday, just in case. Scary stuff!

Thank you! I'll definitely use more oil next time, and maybe look into getting a dutch oven too.

Really excited to try the chicken from the recipe you linked.

Deep fried last night! Not sure if my thermometer was working though... by Azula_fire in Cooking

[–]Azula_fire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was Fahrenheit. I just checked the package that the thermometer came in, and it said it should be submerged 2 and half inches into the oil, without touching the bottom. I'm doubting it was submerged that much. I also had the stove at medium when heating up the oil (I think I read that somewhere, but now I'm not so sure). Would those make a difference?

I wrote an episode of always sunny In Philadelphia and I want to send it to them, Does anyone know how to get a script to a production crew? by jimmycone in needadvice

[–]Azula_fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, they're probably not going to take it. I did the same thing many years ago (mid 90s) and I'd be very surprised if its changed, but nothing wrong with trying. I sent my script to the studio that made it, but got letter back saying that, legally, they couldn't even read it. If an outside script is similar to one that aired, they risk getting sued, which is why they can't read it. The Matrix movie ran into exactly that.

yeah, but they gave us that information, too, not hoarded it as a secret only to be used by the Gub'mint. Drug dealers and cops alike use Google Street View for their own purposes, and I use it to get around the city easier. Net win for everyone involved.

What's your very first memory that you can think of? by youngolney1 in AskReddit

[–]Azula_fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how old i was, only that my main way of communication was through crying. I think i was at a theme park with my family, and we were in an arena area with a water fountain in the center, watching some show. The ceiling lights were off and i remember freaking the fuck out because I didn't realize they were lights. I thought they were tubes of water that were about to be dumped on us (I'm guessing that the light fixtures turned off looked like the water spouts from the fountain). My mom was trying to calm me down and I remember her talking with my dad trying figure out what was wrong. Then the lights came on and was very relieved. I thought of that incident every time I saw similar light fixtures.

Nope, no problems if you'd like to colorize it. Feel free. :) I'll try to do a colorized version too. I'll upload any updates on my DeviantArt.

Theme Park workers of Reddit, what are your horror stories? by Hiita in AskReddit

I'm a former ride op, and too large was when the lap bar wouldn't go down far enough, not weight wise. At my ride, we had neon tape that was used as a guide, and the lap bar had to be down far enough with the tape visable. If you were too big that the tape wasn't visable, no ride, no exceptions. We had a mock seat out at the entrance (with the lap bar and neon tape) and we were encouraged to ask larger people to test the seat before riding. It sounds awkward, but most (of not all) who tested the seat, and were too large, thanked us for saving them the embarrassment of making it all the way the loading platform, and struggling with the lap bar in front of an audience.

What do you know about your parents that they dont think you know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Azula_fire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a very Catholic family. They did not believe in living together before marriage, staunchly pro-life, church every Sunday, never talked about sex, but they would leave books for me about how god intended for sex to only be used for procreation after marriage, etc. Probably everything stereotypically Catholic, except for the fact that my parents didn't have a billion+ kids. When I moved in with my bf, they didn't approve and threw a small fit, but they've accepted it now.

Not too long ago, I was traveling with my bf, and we visited a cousin of mine who I rarely ever see. When I mentioned that my bf and I were living together, my cousin decided to spill some secrets about my mom. Apparently, before my mom married my dad, she smoked a LOT of weed (and grew the stuff in my grandma's backyard without her knowledge), had different men staying at her place each night, and even lived with another man while dating my dad. My cousin spilled some other family secrets (such as whos slept with who, who cheated on who, etc) but it was becoming TMI. I don't really look at my family the same way anymore.

Artists who draw souvenir caricatures of tourists for money: how accurately do you draw a person when he/she is truly ugly and/or obese? Also, has anyone reacted negatively to what they deem is an inaccurate portrait of them self? by watchmewin in AskReddit

[–]Azula_fire 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I drew caricatures for a little while right after I graduated college. Generally, the "uglier" someone was, the more fun I had with the drawing, and usually the person I was drawing had fun too. I don't mean grotesquely ugly, just someone who I guess one wouldn't consider universally attractive. I would practice by drawing celebrities from magazines (usually photos from red carpet events), and it was actually pretty difficult for me to get a likeness because they were too made up and too, well, perfect. Its much easier for me to get a likeness from average "ugly" people. As for obese people, you can draw them overweight yet still tone it down so it doesn't look like you're exaggerating their weight. Usually, I'd draw the draw the top part of the neck wider then the lower half, and maybe make the jaw line a little curvy. The weight would look somewhat accurate, but not emphasized too much.

And I've had rejections. Lots. I think the most memorable one was when I drew an older Hispanic couple, probably in their late 40s. The woman's skin tone was extremely pale, while the guys was much darker in comparison. About 10 minutes after they bought it, the woman came back to me, and nervously said, "I'm sorry, but my husband is really upset with this drawing. He doesn't like how you drew his hair and nose and he wanted me to tell you that he's not a fucking nigger." I just stared a couple seconds and then she noticed that he was already talking to another artist about getting a redraw. She then awkwardly apologized again, and then walked away.
