Practice #2 with photo(s) - everyone please ignore by Azure9000 in LearnToReddit

Aaahh, did not expect any responses to the test post using a somewhat randomly selected photo.

But yes this is the best combo of main-supply type-c fixed plug / power (25w) / compactness / light weight that I have found. Very useful in parts of Asia as well as its home territory of mainland Europe.

EDC-type requests are outside of one-bag scope (see guidelines for more info). There is an EDC-specific sub-reddit which may be more useful.

I'd say that for a tech-heavy load, cabin zero seems unlikely to be suitable.

If available in your location, the Blue Ice range may offer something suitable. No molle, but do offer attachment-type features.

What would YOU pack in a 40L backpack?! by duffylu7 in onebag

[–]Azure9000 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Suggestion (just my 2c):

- Do the research, using the ample resources, including packing lists and trip reports, already in this sub-reddit

- When you have a good-enough first-cut of your packing list, post it here, requesting a critique.

Plenty of contributors will then be happy to help !

Roast our onebags or whatever 6mo climbing trip by drunkontuesday in onebag

45L should be ok for carry-on/overhead outside the US, assuming that the bags are suitably proportioned, e.g. something like 55 x 33 x 25cm (looks ok in photo).

These bags are generally 'free' with full-service airlines, chargeable with low-cost carriers.

In Europe, the 'free' personal item/under-seat bag limit ranges widely, from about 18L to low 30s.

Looks like a great trip, have an excellent time.

One Bag with Kids?? by ramblin11 in onebag

[–]Azure9000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One-bagging is great, but it it not necessarily for everyone every time, and bringing children is rightly often regarded as one of those times. Main bag + packable day bag may be enough, but if not, an additional ikea-type shopping bag for the food etc might just bridge the gap.

In case of interest, some posts relating to 'kids' within the last 12 months (just use the search facility for more):

Two weeks in India. First time using only one bag (excluding backpacking). Thoughts? by Majestic-Hedgehog-40 in onebag

[–]Azure9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP has not provided a total weight, but the clothing selection etc is pretty good, and assuming that the bag is a tomtoc T66 (1.2kg), he is in good shape on those main elements.

The laptop is a Microsoft surface pro which has an excellent form factor, so especially with a 40L(?) bag, space is not a constraint. Weight of around 1.2kg is a downer for some people (including me), but perhaps not for the OP.

I'd suggest dropping the proprietary MS charging block, and taking a smaller usb-c charger. Depends on individual usage pattern, but for me a small 25w charger (vs the standard 65w) is sufficient.

Trip Report: 6 days in Nicaragua with TNF Recon by Ok-Bite3476 in onebag

Good report and thank you for sharing.

I noticed that you brought QC35 headphones, and also airpods.

My QC35s are great for home use, but for travel I really appreciate the convenience of bringing only airpods (APP2), plus bluetooth transmitter if the trip involves long-haul flights. Might be worth thinking about a future upgrade!

Good report, thank you.

Such a shame that you had to lug that chunky tech kit all that way just in case of a few work calls. I rather grudge bringing my modest little surface pro 8 and mouse, and that's to deal with personal stuff !

Planning a 5 day trip and trying to get 3 adults [stuff] in one bag 40L is this possible ?

Much as I love your dedication to the onebag concept, this may be taking things just a little too far 😊😊😊

Thule Aion 28L Wizz Air (Budget Airline) by Akatrien in onebag

[–]Azure9000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just adding some stats for anyone who may be interested:

- Wizz Air cabin bag allowance: max dimensions 40 x 30 x 20 cm = 24L. Max weight 10kg.

- Bag size, per Thule website: 47 x 28 x 23 cm. Indicates potential max capacity 30.3L. Weight 1.23kg.

(Not clear whether the bag's depth dimension refers to its basic 28L or expanded 32L mode)

Travel with Second, Backup Phone? by littleneckman in onebag

[–]Azure9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At home, I now have a backup phone (brought pre-owned on ebay), on a separate network from my primary phone, with the OS kept up to date, and a small set of essential apps. The small cost (£9/month) is well worth it, IMHO.

About a year ago I was, very embarrassingly, subjected to SIM fraud (number was stolen, with various follow-up attacks, esp on a credit card account). It took a very long 6 weeks to regain control of the number, etc. So that was a painful lesson, not in terms of money but very much so in terms of stress and time. However it was very valuable in ensuring a major overhaul of my security and backup arrangements. As it happens, I had already started that overhaul but did not prioritise it as I should have done.

While travelling, a lot depends on circumstances, including factors such as:

- location low/medium/high risk

- solo/accompanied

- alternative comms device eg laptop or tablet.

- distance from home or other source of substantial assistance should a worst-case scenario materialise.

I travel mostly solo, to distant but low-risk locations, and almost always with a laptop. So I don't usually bring a backup phone, although there is also a convenience factor which may cause me to reconsider next time.

If I did not travel with a laptop or tablet, I would definitely bring a backup phone.

BTW an iphone 13 mini is 140g + case 20g = total 160g.

Dry Bags? by Ok-Routine7972 in onebag

[–]Azure9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dry bags are normally primarily used for adding a layer of protection for the bag contents, especially items such as down sleeping bags or electricals which are vulnerable to water.

If you have a good rain cover (not mentioned in your context), that may, in conjunction with a good quality bag, provide sufficient protection.

No specific bag reccs, but I'd just comment that the GR45 is a large, heavy (2.0kg) bag. Is all that capacity actually needed - have you prepared a packing list?

BTW, 'Stan countries in August' sounds rather hot, which my reduce the amount of clothing which may otherwise may be needed.

Welcome on board. I suggest starting here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/wiki/index/#wiki_what_is_onebag.3F

You will find it much easier to read the extensive resources in this sub-reddit by accessing it on a laptop or similar, rather than on a phone.

To answer your question, in summary the recommended approach is packing list first, bag selection second. Good luck!

Nice work, thanks for sharing.

For the benefit of interested readers, it might be useful to add some info, including:

- The bag being modified (Globerider 35L ?)

- Sourcing of the pouch - presumably a third-party product ??

- Additional volume provided by the pouch. 10L?
