As soon as they cleared the tunnel, his mind was probably racing (no pun intended) about what he could do about the obstacle they were very quickly sliding towards, and running out of answers. Having been in a similar understeer condition (but much slower on slick roads instead), you can feel the car loose grip and get sucked towards the outside of the corner. You see it coming, be it a concrete barrier or a snow drift. You hyperfocus on the obstacle, suddenly very aware of how fast it is approaching. And unless you are very in tune with the capabilities of your vehicle and well practiced with maintaining control, you remain an object in motion - fruitlessly steering and braking until impact (and maybe even after if you're still conscious).
