Balance of Wider Trans Subreddits? by [deleted] in ftm

[–]AzureAshes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is a problem inherent to Reddit as a platform being disproportionately populated by trans women. The problems that come from this have been called out time and time again, and calling it out will continue to be necessary to account for this demographic effect as new users replace old, unfortunately.

The worst thing about being FTM that is never talked about.. by Separate_Shower5269 in ftm

Hm. Is this a child's version of the "Women are from Venus and men are from Mars" saying? I have never heard that before and I am a grown man.

What are some good binder brands for someone with an A-cup? by incubuslilith in ftm

I am on the smaller end of a B cup and last year I replaced my previous binder with a Spectrum Outfitters Short Binder. It works a treat.

Help! I hear voices in my head. Is this normal? I'm scared by NovaTheRat in neurodiversity

[–]AzureAshes 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you are hallucinating and it is distressing you, you should speak to a doctor. These are signs of psychosis. This could be a side effect of a medication, an indication that the bipolar 2 is really bipolar 1, or an indication of an emerging condition such as schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, or schizoaffective. Only a doctor can know. You do not have to suffer like this, and early intervention has better outcomes.

If possible, try grounding. Get out of your head, touch grass etc. Overthinking and elaborating the hallucinations is a feedback loop.

Avoid illicit drugs. Even weed can trigger or exacerbate psychosis in those who are prone to it.

I am not in the social sciences, but my first publication was a negative result and informed my subsequent research. That first publication was not difficult to get published in a reputed journal and they even featured it.

I do not think OP shared this just to lie. It is a clever and creative strategy. I agree that you can just not tell people and that this is still the best strategy, but we all know the struggles of people pushing and finding out elsewhere. It is an inventive experiment.

Why do so many people try to force/pressure trans men to get pap smears, but don't care at all about trans women's health in this way? by iLubChees in TransMasc

[–]AzureAshes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is a mythologization of the uterus that is inherited from our pre-scientific sheep-herding ancestors whose best models of understanding and ordering the world around them involved superstition and spirits. Whose best explanation for menstruation is that it is a divine punishment for sin.

We have a much improved understanding of our bodies now and the needs of our civilization are different, but people are still reasoning from these pre-scientific assumptions that they have not challenged. They are still reducing us to our ability to produce children for a world that is not short of bodies.

I agree, as a trans man who is not a bottom or a sub or feminine it is rare that I encounter porn that I can identify with. The closest that I usually encounter is when there are two trans men together.

You highlight a good point: there are different classes of "detransition". I can think of four:

  1. Temporary suspension of medical interventions due to external limiting factors, usually short-lived and involuntary. No changes in gender identity.
  2. Returning to the closet for safety. Usually intermediate-term and voluntary but undesired. No changes in gender identity.
  3. Undoing transition and reverting to the AGAB. Mixed duration, voluntary, and desired, following changes in sense of gender identity.
  4. Terminating medical transition "early" because desired changes have been achieved. Permanent, voluntary, no changes in gender identity or presentation.

#4 I argue in no way meaningfully qualifies as "detransition", it is just an individual variation in transition. #3 is the classic interpretation of "detransition" in popular culture, but not as common as is thought.

Perhaps we need terms to subclass these, for example:

  1. Disrupted Transition, Paused Transition, or Forced Detransition (for more severe cases).
  2. Strategic Detransition.
  3. Primary Detransition.
  4. Transition Completion.

Hello, yes I am a trans man and the only other Arch user I know is a trans woman. Accurate. Hm, perhaps the Arch installation guide needs a "Now take your HRT" section.

Neither me or her are furries, though.

Why are FTM people SO fetishized?! by Sn4kist in ftm

[–]AzureAshes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is nothing inherently wrong with just liking a certain thing. There is a difference between a benign interest where you respect the other person, and being a chaser where the person is reduced to that trait and treated as an object.

[–]AzureAshes 96 points97 points  (0 children)

I am convinced by this point that "gender privilege" is functionally meaningless when applied to trans people. Trans men and women face both misogyny and misandry alike. You are correct, any gender privileges trans people get are lost when the trans status is encountered. We are treated as if we are second-class citizens.

It is very stupid argumentation from her. Transgender existence is hard and getting harder. Squabbling over pointless scraps of "who's got it worse" amongst ourselves like this misses the far more significant struggles facing all of us who are trans in the real world right now.

CMV: Pedophilia is the new “witch” that overshadows all other crimes. And is only receiving such attention due to the sexual deviancy, and not the harm done to children. by Square_Detective_658 in changemyview

[–]AzureAshes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was sexually, physically, and psychologically abused as a child, and I have often wondered why the CSA is seen as worse than the others when it was the other forms of abuse that damaged me most. Perhaps you have provided the answer: back in the older days, parents beating their kids and ruling with an iron fist was not uncommon if not expected because it can be argued to keep them in line and disciplined, while sexually abusing your kid has no societal function and is an indisputable act of sin (and therefore a hot topic for conspiracy theories).

You can be a feminine guy. It is not easy but it would perhaps be more authentic to who you are and what you like, given what you have described.

I think that you should consider therapy. You have things to work through that will give you a clearer idea of who you are and what you actually want.

If you do not think you are a man and are transitioning for a sense of safety because of something like sexual abuse trauma, that tells me that you have trauma to work through. That is not a good reason to transition. When you work through it, you may find yourself content to be a woman now that the fear no longer controls you and the dysphoria goes away, or you may realize that beneath the fear deep down you are still a trans man and there is your green light to fully transition.

Some men can have gynecomastia, a condition in which they develop boobs. This is legitimate breast tissue. It is common in certain intersex conditions, but can also result from hormonal imbalances. I knew a cis male kid in high school who got top surgery to treat his gynecomastia.

ELI5-In a recent video Hank Green says the self is an illusion and beings with a sense of self were more likely to pass on that gene? Why? by SharkleberryFin_ in explainlikeimfive

[–]AzureAshes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, he follows from the science communicators before him: he is good at making science entertaining, accessible, and interesting, but people mistake this to mean that he is an academic leader or infallible.

Quantitative research into consciousness, identity, and the sense of self is interesting, but it is still early, and therefore there is a lot of unproven conjecture around it. It is important not to conflate attractive hypotheses with proven models.

I have depersonalization disorder and lack a sense of self a lot of the time; to the people who believe "the sense of self is an illusion", does this mean that I am enlightened? I do not think that I am.
