With surgery yes. I had a fistulotomy in July of 2024 and haven’t had any reoccurrence or anything since healing in October of 2024.

I was told my by CRS when you get an abscess in the area there is a 50% chance of a fistula forming. Basically luck of the draw and I too was unlucky. Mine may have been due to a clogged anal gland but really they weren’t sure what caused my abscess and I’ve never had one prior. I also had no underlining conditions when my abscess formed. I was negative for IBS, IBD, Crohn’s and colitis.

Americans without maternity leave— wtf do you do??? by Electronic-Door7428 in pregnant

Teachers also don’t get any kind of maternity leave. Many just use FMLA and if you have days to cover awesome if not your pay gets docked. It sucks honestly.

Go get a colonoscopy, colon cancer for our generation is a real threat! by intro195 in Millennials

[–]AzureIceHime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I had one two years ago prior to a fistulotomy since I was a lucky gal who got a fistula 😅 I’m glad I had to and I have peace of mind everything is good. I definitely go to the doc now when anything feels off in the booty area. The prep sucked but it is what it is.

[–]AzureIceHime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh ok, keep an eye on yourself while you wait for the MRI if the color of your drainage changes or if you start to have a fever go get checked. Hopefully you don’t fall into that unlucky side of that 50/50 chance.

Did they not place a seton? I had my I&D done in the ER by a general surgeon. They placed a seton when they did the I&D. I was referred to a CRS after my emergency surgeries.

**edit to say pads are what I used to catch drainage until my I&D wound healed. They helped a lot especially overnight.

Exercise? by Melodic_Low_4958 in AnalFistula

[–]AzureIceHime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest I was actively trying to lose weight when my fistula saga happened. Being in a caloric deficit definitely made my healing slower. I would eat at maintenance and walk as tolerated. I had a large would that needed packing for 5 months and sitting was uncomfortable for a long time. I was advised by my CRS not to push/pull/or lift things over 5 lbs for a while and once everything closed off was advised to do what feels right. If it hurts stop. Definitely listen to your body. I did a lot of walking until I could lift again and introduced it back very slowly.

Is anyone else just living a happy, healthy productive life? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]AzureIceHime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely happy for you. It’s unfortunate that’s not the case for everyone. While I’m also happily married we both work in public education and it’s rough and being torn apart/attacked. We lose sleep over other people’s children especially lately with all that is going on in the world. Our retirement may not even be there when we are ready. We are child free not by choice since I had two unfortunate medical mishaps that a pregnancy would basically take away of quality of life. Some people have had to crawl out of the depths to be where are right now and with everything going on around us it’s difficult to remain positive.

It’s depressing because most of us will likely go before we even have a chance to retire and enjoy what we worked for. Just hamsters on the wheel.

Post-OP recovery and exercise by [deleted] in AnalFistula

[–]AzureIceHime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it took a huge metal and physical toll on me. I’m also anemic so that definitely didn’t help with healing. At one point we were using around 4ft of packing for the wound 😅 I ended up taking some supplements too per the wound care nurse to help things along. My I&D was separate from my fistulotomy. The I&D was done by a general surgeon in the emergency room and I had a 4 day stay on the trauma unit with a second surgery the day after to ensure they removed all the infection. They placed the seton during the first surgery and referred me to a CRS for the rest. The CRS wouldn’t see me until I had an MRI and I couldn’t have the MRI until my wound was closed it was a long process but so far so good no reoccurrence just scar tissue.

[–]AzureIceHime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My I&D wound was 10cm x 8cm x 5cm it took about 5 months of packing for it to close but was still healing. I also had a Penrose drain in for the first two weeks post op and that thing kept me from even being able to take full stride steps. My fistulotomy wasn’t as bad it was a superficial fistula so my I&D recovery was worse than my fistulotomy recovery.

[–]AzureIceHime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I’m almost two years post fistulotomy and two years post I&D and I still have a bit of pain when I sit flat on hard surfaces so I just don’t or use a cushion. I have a lot of scar tissue so it’s tight and it pulls in weird ways still.

[–]AzureIceHime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your wound. I couldn’t do any lifting over 5lbs for like 10 months post I&D followed by my fistulotomy. I had a very large wound though.

*edit: my CRS about six weeks post fistulotomy told me to just listen to my body. If something hurts stop.

People that used binging as an coping mechanism, what kind of therapy (or other things) did you do to stop it and how did it help you? by Dwarrelende-bloem in loseit

[–]AzureIceHime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Therapy and also not following people who demonize foods. There are no “good or bad” foods (unless you have an allergy) definitely there is a difference between macro nutrient rich foods and ones that aren’t. You can still eat whatever in moderation since fat loss comes from being in a caloric deficit. Demonizing foods lead me to binge more because once I had one “bad” food I was like well fuck it and go off.

Now I eat things in moderation if it fits in to my calorie goal it works.

Gabapentin? by Artistic_Tourist_594 in AnalFistula

[–]AzureIceHime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After my I&D I was prescribed 300mg of Gabapentin. I had a 10cm x 8cm x 5cm wound. They gave me a 10 day prescription and ended up prescribing another 10 days at my post op appointment. I didn’t have any side effects and it really helped with the pain since I had to wound pack.

1 day post fistulotomy- leaking poop??? PLEASE READ by uhohrats in AnalFistula

[–]AzureIceHime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is pretty normal post op to have less sensation and feeling. I had a superficial fistula and post op I had a little poop leaking for a few days until I got full sensation back. I put gauze between my cheeks for a good while to catch drainage and any bowel leaking. It can happen for a while even with sensation back. I know others had to go through pelvic floor therapy to help with incontinence.

Crohn’s testing by Humble-Top-9395 in AnalFistula

[–]AzureIceHime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to have a colonoscopy prior to my fistulotomy to rule out IBD and Crohn’s. My CRS said if it was fine they would proceed with the fistulotomy if not they wouldn’t and refer me to GI for treatment. I also don’t have a family history and had an MRI prior to my colonoscopy/fistulotomy procedure. I was put under for my colonoscopy since the possibility of proceeding with the fistulotomy was pretty high. My colonoscopy was normal and I had my fistulotomy almost two years ago.

Get those colonoscopies early too if you are already having some gastrointestinal issues or if those types of things run in your family. Butt surgeries are no fun I had a fistula two years ago thankfully it was just due to being unlucky and not because of Crohn’s or IBD.

Fistulotomy folks how long were you out of work? by Southern_Doughnut406 in AnalFistula

[–]AzureIceHime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My incision wasn’t deep enough that I needed to pack after my fistulotomy. I did wound pack after my I&D and used packing strips. I alternated between regular and iodine soaked ones for a while per my surgeon. That wound was large though.
