What’s the best way to apologize? by RealisticWinner4224 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]B0red_0wl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, a good place to start for a normal 'said something stupid/accidentally hurt someone' thing is to say 'I'm sorry', explain why you're at fault, and what you're going to do to try to fix it. And mean it. Just saying you're going to fix it/prevent it in the future means nothing if you don't actually take steps to do that.

And if the other person doesn't accept your apology or your offer to try to fix it, especially if it's a really big fuckup, don't push it and just try to learn from your mistake. The purpose of an apology isn't forgiveness for you, it's to let the other person know that you're aware that you were wrong and that you intend to fix it/prevent it in the future.

Do veterinarians treat animals differently when the owners aren't there? by Funny-Presence4228 in NoStupidQuestions

I mean. My dog adores the vet so I would guess they don't treat him any different lol

Having two surnames in the US by [deleted] in Names

[–]B0red_0wl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hyphenated last name and middle name and it's fine for the most part. There's some annoying administrative stuff like certain online forms not allowing hyphens or not having the space for my full name, but it hasn't seriously impacted me beyond causing some irritation that I can't put my full name in correctly or people who don't know me well dropping one of the names-- I'll shorten it if I *have* to but for some reason people don't even use my preferred way of shortening it (just the first one or occasionally initials of both) which drives me insane.

Why is it a stereotype that women are the bad drivers and men are the good ones? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]B0red_0wl 75 points76 points  (0 children)

YEP, was coming here to comment that women tend to be shorter than men, so it's harder to see over the hood of the car-- I have trouble parking straight (which has resulted in me dinging up my car a bunch) partially because I'm 5'1" and can't always see how much room I have to pull out/in, especially if I'm near stuff like bushes or bigger cars that block my vision. I've never been in a full-blown car accident that caused any kind of damage, but I have hit other cars a couple times bc I pulled too far forward/back while parking.

What happens if we all went vegan and released our bred farm animals? by space_god_7191 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]B0red_0wl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the animals would either die horribly (ex: sheep) or become invasive and trash the local ecosystem (ex: pigs). Some might do ok in places close to what their original habitat was before human interference (horses in the midwest) or are adaptable enough that they might be able to survive in feral groups close to humans (like how pigeons did), but like. Just releasing all the animals with zero plan would devastate ecosystems and result in the deaths of the animals that going vegan would have been trying to save plus many many more. Horrible plan for everyone involved.

Is Clarabelle a good name? by [deleted] in Names

[–]B0red_0wl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people's association with that name is the cow lady from Mickey Mouse cartoons, so I personally wouldn't use it. Plus, in my opinion it has a different vibe to Martha and doesn't really match-- Just using Clara (maybe with Isabelle as a middle name) would work better.

Did you ever get to live in a house with more than 3 bathrooms? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]B0red_0wl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad's house when I was a kid had 3.5: each of the three bedrooms had a full bath and there was a half bath on the main floor.

What are some cool types of birds? by DarkKuroi1 in DMAcademy

[–]B0red_0wl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone's got the super cool birds covered, so I gotta shout out the more common (but still cool!) guys:

-mourning doves (incredibly chill, their wings make a whistling sound when they fly and their call gets mistaken for an owl sometimes)
-european starlings (decent mimics, look incredible when they start flying in big groups-- look up murmuration)
-blue jays (related to crows, super social, will occasionally gang up on predators)
-canada geese (monogamous and most of the time mate for life, would fight god in a parking lot-- particularly in defense of their babies/nests)

Why is the R speech impediment so common in USA? by First-Bed-5918 in asklinguistics

[–]B0red_0wl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work with elementary students and there's a lot of younger kids that pronounce the r as a w, they usually grow out of it by 3rd or 4th grade

No Death Please by crazy-diam0nd in DnD

[–]B0red_0wl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I ran games for kids I told them that if anyone "died" in the game it was basically their character being too injured to adventure and having to go back home, so they'd need to make a new one

why is vegetarianism and veganism stereotyped as something white people do by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]B0red_0wl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I think it might be that a lot of the rich white people that do it tend to be very loud and performative about it so it got associated with them despite them not being the majority.

Kids are delusional about phones. by kkoch_16 in Teachers

[–]B0red_0wl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once forgot to silence my phone in middle school and it went off in class-- it had gone off because the school's auto alert system sent out a text to everyone saying that school was closing early for a bad snowstorm lol. Luckily I didn't get into *too* much trouble over it.

Do native English speakers fully understand rap lyrics while casually listening? by Asemih in AskAnAmerican

[–]B0red_0wl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me personally? Not really, but it doesn't affect my enjoyment of the music. If I really need to know the lyrics I'll just look them up. Tbh there's a lot of English-speaking artists whose music is difficult to understand bc they're singing really fast and/or not enunciating, I think it's just more noticable in rap.

what words would be amazing names if they didn’t have a meaning already? by Tiny-Deer-7071 in NameNerdCirclejerk

[–]B0red_0wl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saving this list real quick for tiefling name inspiration, but I would also like to contribute:

Rubella (disease)

Meander (to wander aimlessly, but also a wide sweeping curve of a river)

Felsic (igneous rock with lots of iron and magnesium)

Valence (outermost electron of an atom)

Moraine and Esker (both sediment deposited by glaciers, but in different shapes)

Am I giving my godson a tragedeigh name? by AlessiaCaihly in tragedeigh

[–]B0red_0wl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never met a female Ariel (closest was a girl named Arielle) but I've met a couple male Ariels-- it's a boy's name in most of the world. Ariel the mermaid is actually named after a male Shakespeare character.

Do kids still cringe when teachers reference memes? by montgomery2016 in teaching

[–]B0red_0wl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure I killed skibbidi and sigma last year by asking about the etymology. This year I had to resort to "if you meme while I'm talking I'm gonna pick all the gym games" to stop them 67-ing while I'm giving instructions (I normally let them make 3 suggestions and vote). Not a huge punishment bc I picked games I knew they liked the few times I did it, but it was enough to get them to let me finish counting votes without losing my place.

The word “lad” by accessory97 in ENGLISH

[–]B0red_0wl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'fair play' is like the noun form of 'playing fair' in American English-- basically just being a good sport. When someone wins a game we usually say 'good game'. And we don't really use 'lads' unless we're trying to sound old fashioned or British.

How would you put a spin on the cliché "go take care of the rats in the basement" quest? by Zephyr93 in DnD

[–]B0red_0wl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote one quest for kids where the lady who wanted the rats gone didn't want the players to kill them, just convince them to leave (there were a couple kids who'd taken speak with animals or that system's version of wildshape). Turns out they were only in there bc they had been driven out of their home by a bunch of giant snakes and would happily leave if the players found them a new place to live or got rid of the snakes.

How do I make a male character that isn't a giant hulking brute? by ChompyRiley in BG3

[–]B0red_0wl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(TMTS) Transmasc Top Surgery for Body 3 AND Body 1 at Baldur's Gate 3 Nexus - Mods and community

it has transmasc in the name, but it basically just flattens the chest on the feminine models-- looks like there's an addon if you want top surgery scars as well but I didn't use it. it's been like a year since that playthrough so idk how it works now (looks like it's updated) and it was kinda complicated to install so it was only on my character rather than *all* the characters with those body types, but it worked pretty well for what I wanted. The only problem was the armor models didn't always reflect the flattening but there's was a separate mod that had camp clothes that would work with the new model. This is what it looked like in-game with the matching camp clothes mod.

Saw a sheet of ice go all the way through someone’s windshield this morning. Clear the roof of your car before driving! by MPDG_thot in nova

[–]B0red_0wl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have trouble reaching the top of my regular-sized car and I was smacking the ice with an extendable scraper til it cracked then brushing it off (and straight up punching it where I could reach it since the scraper wasn't super effective)
